Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

All white will look good, a matching red vinyl insert would look GREAT. Get the $20 less all white, live w/ it & use the boat. An upholstery shop should be able to fairly inexpensively add a matching red insert later. Then it'll match the red on the boat.

The white w/ red insert seats might look ok, but I doubt they'd be close to the red you're painting.

JB - Completely forgot about having to match paint with the vinyl that would be on the seats. I agree 100% that the red will probably not match the hull so I wil purchase the white seats.

Also, trailer parts were upgraded to 2-3 days shipping so hopefully they will be here tomorrow (probably not) rather than monday so I can get the trailer finished this weekend!

Struggled with the same decision about solid light blue seats for the Mckenzie (light blue inserts were not available), but went with the Wise solid white. The plastic base was easy to cut down to the right height. Not super quality but adequate. Red is always extra tricky to get just right, but when you hit it - FANTASTIC. Since they come with just the redinsert, I would be tempted to make the statement.
Keep up the enthusiasm!

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

I would love to see the seats match the hull. I could buy the seats now, then take a sample in and match it. I may try to contact Wise and see what the exact color of the seats is. It will be tough to find that color paint though...

I will most likely go with a solid white and then later, touch up the seats if need be..

I will take a look at those redneck.

After walking to the engine a few months ago and realizing that the engine had some spots that were leaking, I decided it was time to fix them. THere are 4 spots where it looks like a bolt broke off and it is now leaking air when the pistons are moving. There is also one spot that I do not know what it is for. I have attached a picture with lines indicating the leaking and unknown things.

I have looked on both marineengine and boats . net and can not figure out which parts I need to replace it so I was hoping someone would be able to tell me. If you need more pictures, I can post some.

Thanks all and have a good day,

BB

Sorry for the lack of updates.

Bearings Pack, Hubs Attached, Springs Attached to Axle and Trailer, Fenders On, Rollers and Mounts on, Beam to hold Winch and Bow Stop On, Bow Stop On, Winch on (Im going to buy a new one). Just need to purchase new tires!

Found the paint im going to use Rust-Oleum 207004 Marine Topside Paint in Bright Red and White. The reviews say that 1 quart will get me 3 coats but I think im going to get 2 quarts of each to be safe. Is there a point that too many coats is bad?

Also, what primer works with the Rust-Oleum really well? The Rust-Oleum Spray Can Primer for HD or Lowes?

After a light coating of spray Zinc Chromate self-etching primer on any exposed aluminum areas, I used Rustoleum Marine Coatings Primer for Metal. I also applied it over sound old paint on the interior that I had roughed up with sandpaper. After a coat of this stuff, the Topside paint has held up very well and has been quite durable. (I did find that the paint took a lot longer to cure than the label specified. It took almost a month to get really hard, but that could have been because of the damp weather we were having at the time. If you use the hardener, it should be pretty much bullet-proof.)

It says you can apply the primer directly to clean metal, but I would always use the ZC self-etching primer first.

You should always use primer/paint of the same brand.

Maybe he can paint, but look how he left the rub rails hangin'. :D.

I agree with lakelover about the zinc chromate on bare AL. You probably only need one spray bomb to dust the bare spots. Rustoleum has been the paint of choice for many of us.

Yep, that part is still a work-in-progress! It resulted from the assumption that the rub rail material wouldn't shrink! I thought that when if go hot, if anything, it would expand! Nope....

I have a plan for it though, involving drill bits, cussing, and SS screws.

I read through this post in the email they sent on my phone. At first I thought you were completely serious as I couldnt see the picture!

Lake: 2 Things: 1) Your boat is AMAZING!! One of the convincing factors for me to get a jet! Do you know if the 1964 has the same rub rail sizes as the 68? If not, how do I measure them? I tried looking online but everytime I do, I can never find the exact rail and insert. 2) DO you know where I could get a bow cap?

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

Oops! It didnt include my reply to Lakes Original post. SO to summarize it:

Thank you for the very helpful advice. One can of Zinc Chromate should be plenty as I only have a few spots that need paint. Do I need multiple coats of primer and do I apply primer over the zinc primer?

I forgot to mention I plan on painting the interior from the splash well forward inside the boat. Will 2 cans of the white paint be enough for a few coats on the exterior as well as a couple coats on the interior? Will one quart of the red be enough for the topside?

Thanks Everyone!

Ha! Thanks, I had a lot of guidance! I don't know if the rub rail sizes are the same, but I would think they are.

Did you see this? http://forums.iboats.com/starcraft-boats/official-starcraft-rubrail-thread-501999-3.html#post3532284

Bow caps are probably mighty scarce, you might watch ebay...

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

How do you plan on applying the paint? Roll n' Roll or Spray? If you Roll it then it will take a bit more paint. 2 qts of White and 2 qts or Red. You'll want 2 coats of primer for sure and Possibly 3 depending on what you find after the first coat. You'll see all your imperfections after the first coat of primer and you may want to sand and fill afterwards and then apply another coat.

I plan on rolling it on. Will 2qts of white cover the Inside with a couple coats as we'll? Should 2 qts of primer
Be enough?
