Remove spark plugs and turn it over by hand. If it turns over by hand I'd get a little 2 stroke oil in the cylinders and then turn by hand some more. I believe that motor will start with no harness hooked up to it so be aware.
Just hook up the harness as it would in the boat. When doing compression CK you could leave key in off position and jump the starter so you have no spark to worry about. Or ground you spark plug wires.

If your remote has a safety switch dont hook up the lanyard and that will kill spark also

Thanks guys, keep the info flowing. I definitely want to hook up the harness and add some gauges to read if only temporary. Also so I can be a little distance from this girl when she fires up. For me it's a little more about the battery hook up, grounding and I've also read I should have a fuse in line. Anyone have a diagrham I can look at with these conditions?
The motor turns freely. I've kept my hand on that since she went to sleep.

Well got home from work and stayed awake. I have been looking all over the net and in relation to Johnson motors or any ob motors for that matter that had a stand and for testing;
I was unable to find a site that showed how to put your ob on a stand, hook up your remote and run/test it while on the stand.
Even less were any wiring diaghrams to at least get a sense of how to;
Put your ob on a stand
Then hook up your remote
Then be able to test it, tune it up, repair/replace parts needed for the average tune up.

So Lets see if I can make one thats simple stupid For ob for Dumb People like me.

Well got the ob tilted so now I can
-access the hydraulic fluids
-proved the stand works
-wired in the remote controls for forward, revers, neutral. Will probably need adjustments
-Hooked up the VRO, Ignition plug and sensor plugs.
I'll try to define ea.as I learn more and move along.
Fisrt pics;
This little piggy weighs over 600 lbs...

In general this is a description in regards to my ob: Johnson 225 VRO
SERVICE MANUAL LOOP V 87
But getting the motor up on the stand and hooking it up for testing is waht I'm gonna try to demonstrate.
I talked with alot of guys on the IBOATS Johnson motor link and boy they are great and helped me identify the motor and select the best manual. I did that like 2 yrs ago and now it's paying off.
The manual I got was from: marine engine................
Very detailed and If was missing something the boys here chimed in with pdf's and info. Way out of my league but now it's time to put learning/reading into practice. So you can all learn at my expense lol.

Can't help with your engine project, but wanted to say the stand looks great sitting on the bricks with the extra supports secured to the plywood deck! Looks nice and solid.

Hey kcassells, what ever works is the correct way in my book. Just be careful when firing it up. But no better way to run, test and fix things then a mockup setup like you've made. Let us know how it all works out.

Thanks for asking, we got a lot of use out of her this year so far, and everything has been great! We've done a three week trip, a couple two week trips and one week trips and several three or four day trips. I'm really pleased with the old girl, well both old girls, the boat and the wife, lol. Much more fun than grinding fiberglass! You'll get there, just keep plugging away.

You lucky dog! I'll be getting some for the stand to test with. Went to Pep Boys for some "approved" transmission fluid but a no go. So I'll have to google for a local place or make an order. But yea... That Mikey sure sounds like he's enjoying his boat. Have a good day Mick.

Well my Evinrude/johnson power trim/tilt/steering fluid showed up here today. Soess I say to myself Hmmm If I buy some gourmet hoagies for fri. night dinner I may as well go grab a fresh deep cycle battery. The battery was just sitting next to the hoagies in the hoagie store.
Guess tom. or sun after work I bleed it out and fill it in and get the tilt checked out.
Hehe maybe have to do a Micky and gas up da girl for a quickie. neva know. Getting exciting. :joyous:
Pics if I don't blow up.

NEVER FORGET!!! to all who made the sacrifice and to those that continually protect us!

Well I got the johnson/evenrude power steering/tilt/power steering fluid earlier in the week. Finally got to get at it today. Just working with that hog of a ob motor is daunting to me with it's weight and height. I am always xtra careful around it while it's on the stand. Now it was time to fill and bleed out the tilt motor oil and see if the motor/oil would do the job.
Picked up a fresh battery along the way and hooked it up to the motor as my manual indicated.
Filled the oil for the first time and it took 6 ounces. {I had bleed it out priot to moving so it would be able to hook onto stand then be transported on the transom to my new residence.** By the end it required @ 26 oz. and I added @ 26 oz.

The instructions say to fill...then bleed, then fill @ 5 times. I did that and each time work the lifts alittle ea. time to see how they reacted while the motor was in the tilted locked position. The pistons raised partially the 1st couple of times then eventually went to full tilt and vertical lock position.
I was very happy with that. Some of the lifts to bleed out the air had to be manual but after the 2nd manual the lifts/pistons began to do there jobs.
I know it's a small hurdle but with the motor powered up and the tilt doing its job I surely have a large smile on my face!! ;)
Again the manual regarding the motor I have was the result with working with the outboard motor guys on this forum and they as the rest of erveryone have really helped me and reduced the intimadations of this project.
Back at ya!

Anyone ever plant watermelons next to pumpkins and melons and get something that looks like this?
