Re: Propane prices (Warning- RANT)

Not to apologize but facts.

Propane is a by-product of refining, NOT the natural resource (oil/gas, etc.)

The issues with propane are transportation. Midwest bad weather caused a lot of transportation issues. Low Supply=Higher Prices.......

Until we relax (EPA) the building of new refineries, the fluctuation in prices will continue.

And the ban on coal is also driving up the cost on ALL energy. Electric companies that use to rely on coal are now using natural gas AND some use backup propane. The electric utilities are putting a LARGE demand on delivery sources. I have to keep politics out of this but.........

FYI I guess you can use a 20 lb tank if you need to. This will last a week I heard from a friend.

When its cold and windy here, I can easily go through 200 gallons a month. So the 20# tank would last about 13 HOURS.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)? Why can't we get that rolling? Seems like it's a total non starter? What's the problem there anyway?

From what I've read. (and I stayed at a Holiday in Express last night too...)

You'd need a CNG tank the size of a barn to equal the BTU's of a LPG tank.

LNG would be a better option as "gallon for gallon" it's relatively close to the BTU's of propane, but it needs to be stored very cold, something like -300. You would need a very well insulated tank, and even at that the LNG would boil off at some point. Though, if the whole house is using LNG; stove, water heater, etc, maybe that would be enough to keep up with the boil off. Don't now as I'm not a LNG expert...:D

Compressing natural gas is how it is transported all over the country since the 40's and perhaps earlier. It's also compressed and pumped into underground storage fields(old mines, wells, caverns) at as much as 2200psi and pumped back out during the lean times. Natural gas companies are ramping up to ship LNG to Europe and China in the very near future...lots of it. Exporting is the next big plan.

Friend retired commodity for Canadian energy companies. He still has his connections in the industry. Oh the pipeline used to pipe to use now works in reverse as the price is higher.

We just got filled today. 233 gals for the month. I think that did in the rest of our contract for the season. Went fast this year. Now it will be time for $5/gal on the next fill up.....

That is true. We have reconfigured to pump backwards for the first time in over 60 years.

We are sending 70,000 barrels of LP to Canada daily

OK. You are in the ball park, but about 30% too high.
One hundred percent of any exports is made from natural gas that we sent your way.

Do you actually have a point that you are trying to make....or are you just stirring the bottom for effect ?

I'm still waiting on my fill, supposed to be this week.
Still have 470 gallons prepaid, so that should get me thru March, if they can deliver, and if I keep the conservation efforts going.

I was supposed to rebuild another project boat this winter, already have a buyer for the old one.
But there is no way I am heating the garage under these conditions.

BTW, who uses wood as a back up or as the main and propane as back up?

Last year we saved half of our propane cost by burning wood. This year we have burned as much wood as we did all of last year already. Still have a long ways to go. We are going to run out of seasoned wood real soon.

Thankfully we have a contract with our Co-op. Price is locked in at $1.89 until May. Still will be burning wood to try and save $$$.

We are locked in at $1.44ish for the year but for some inexplicable reason our lake house has a pretty small tank...I think only 300 gallons if I recall. I would have switched it out for the bigger one had I had a clue this would be an issue back in August when it was empty. The only saving grace is the southern exposure and all the windows that bring the sun in. I'm actually afraid to see our primary house gas bill...the kids run the fireplace like it is a rule to do so and the wife jacks up the temp to 70 daily which is a big order.

Sounds like I need to get out to the lake place and start selling propane ;) Have a 420 gallon tank out there that is only used for the garage heat - which almost never gets turned on. The house in on nat gas.

Did the previous owners use it at all in the winter? If they didn't they likely completely winterized it and didn't heat it at all during the winter.
