Re: hull extension in progress with picks
Re: hull extension in progress with picks
getting back to the strakes......in this pic....if you look really closely....you can see a slight waver in the strake....
too much......!....the strakes need to be paralell with the chines.....and they were out just a tad......not good enough
you can also see a waver in the chine......its not anywhere as bad as it looks in the pic....(the poor light in the shop makes good pics difficult)
here i was starting to cover the main keel area with wraps of matt matt 1708 layup........
see that old blue gell goat?.....it had to come off later......i didnt think it would be a factor as the glass bonded to it well before.....but i later decided to grind out the area and remove the gellcoat totally......it was late and i wasnt thinking clearly, or i would have just ground it out right then !

these pics were from a few days ago......
after i realized there was a problem....i contacted dale from svfarah boats....
dale is a salty ol dawg, who started glassing boats on the west coast years ago......dale jumped on and helped me get straightend out.....
we re ground out the strakes.....(i really wasnt out by much)
and using a 12 foot legnth of heavy angle iron we placed it next to the strake taped it in position....(tuck tape) and back filled up to it.....
this produced an amazingly straight strake......
again...the pics are bad due to light....but these things are dead straight....and perfectly symmectrical to the hull
the alignment from chine to strake is 14 ins
ill get more detailed photos of the process of building the strake today, including the angle iron....the poly fair stuck to the iron on the test section....so i wrapped the iron in tuck tape.....(the surface of the tape is really waxy)....it worked like a charm.....the iron came off the strake perfectally and left a smooth glossy finish.
in this pic you can see the sharpness of the chine and the strake.
for a proper fair job in large surfaces....you need a point of reference.....somthing i did not have before when i was doing it by my self.
the angle iron gives us a point of reference, one from the chine, another from the strake. them all you have to do is fill the low spots....
ill have more tommorow, as ther is a lot more work done to the hull, i have a full camera full.... including the keel being straightened
cheers
