Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ahhh air......(dreaming....dreaming).....

actually i have a good compressor that might do it....but it has been stolen by a guy....(lent out and never returned).....but the other day chez, (my buddie wiht the grizzly problem a few pages back) walked on to a construction site and there he was...so i might be able to get it.

we dont have a harbour freight up here, so getting the cheap longboard will be difficult

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

here is the update from thursday nite

as mentioned.....angle iron wrapped with tuck tape was used to straighten the strakes and the chines

picgroup48004.jpg

the tuck tape made a perfect mold release agent.......it aint a cnc machine ....but it worked !

picgroup48002.jpg

note the tuck tape holding the angle iron in place........in boat building....use whatever you can....!

picgroup48003.jpg

the angle iron made perfect chines......alll we did was back fill to the chines....right up to the angle iron

picgroup48009.jpg

we also used a large 20 foot peice of channel iron for straightening out the keel

picgroup48010.jpg

when the angle iron comes off.....the puppy is straight

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

not sure if you can see it here....(the light is so bad in the shop)....but the hook in the hull is visible at the bottom of the putty knife.

picgroup48012.jpg

when the big channel iron came off....the hull was straight

picgroup48014.jpg

the idea of fairing is to start with a reference point and build to it.....when i was doing it by myself....i didnt have a reference piont....(starting point...or finishing point.....i just filled till it looked good.....now it looks good.

picgroup48013.jpg

this is just the starting point.......the area between the chines and strakes needs to be built up.........

fairing is a messy ...dusty job......and dale has a habit of rubbing his face when thinking

picgroup48005.jpg

from the high side of the channel iron to the strake....we need to fill.....

the idea is to fill to the back side of the iron....then take the iron off and fill the remaining area

picgroup48015.jpg

that was the beginning of the job.......on the weekend...... its fairing time

Glad to see you finally got a pro to help finish the Hull, Prolly saved the project. I hate working with Pro's, They make thing's look so simple you always wonder, why didn't I think of that?? Hook ain't near as bad as it looked when we put it on the trailer and will be easy now to correct. You mentioned the Bayliner is running now, how does that shallow V work in the big water? What does my nephew jsh had drcided mean in english? Cary [golf] bought a house in westbank and lives there now.

Looking good!! Before the expert intervention, that hull would have road like it was going down a rough logging road and the driver was drunk. Now it will be smooth as silk.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

from where the hull was....to where it is now....is a real difference...since were working with millimeteres....the pics dont really let you see anything at all !

this is a pick of the bow just after a sanding run with the long boards...(16 inch hand sanding boards)

picgroup49002.jpg

this is the starboard side before we "went for it"

picgroup49003.jpg

the strakes needed a final tuning....so we put the angle iron back on them ....we back filled....then hand blocked them....again

picgroup49004.jpg

after we tuned in the strakes.....dale jumped on the hull for a final fill coat of the strake to keel area....(port side)

picgroup49005.jpg

the fill is just about done here

picgroup49006.jpg

i wish you guys could really see the progress....the light plays soo many tricks on the eyes....

they say the camera doesnt lie??????....come in to my shop and see the polorid fibbing!

This foto kinda reminds me of the mad Maestro wielding his baton.:D

I guess you long ago got your catalyst mixture down to allow some decent working time? It would seem that it would be hard to get that thick stuff mixed up thoroughly?

the caytlest we are using....mekp....is a summer potion called dds 30.

the working time is about 7 minits....so we are using really small batches
its a real pita when your skin coating, and the stuff flashes leaving a perfectially smooth skin coat.....then a real lumpy cottage cheese surface you have to grind off !

yup john....its called a step.......it allows air under the hull at plane.

oke mannerfelt is credited with the first engineered production step...(the bat boat)...racing boat drivers have been doing it for years.

i really really really wanted one.

but mine wont have one.......

steps are funny things......to work correctly, the plaining surface of the boat must be 18 inches foward of the step. if not on plane, the steps will actually cause major drag (kinda like a huge hull hook !).
the problem is, in our pleasure craft, the plaining surface is not a constant. different speeds, passenger loads, fuel levels and personal gear loads, will play havoc with a plaining surface.

i could never be assured that it would not create drag instead of the lift, so the idea of the step was scrapped.

during major investigation of stepping the hull, i found that the racing crowd was the only one that really benefetted from the steps, as they know exactally where in any givin situation, the plaining surface will be...so they build the boats with this in mind.

i was told by a very reliable source, that in production boat building, they feel it is easyer to sell a boat with a step. so they just guess where they go put them in and say the boat has a stepped hull !......(but they dont work worth a darn cause they arent engineered for the boat/motor pkg)

i would just love to feel the difference of a true stepped hull.

the oke mannerfelt bat boat is being produced locally by the former owners of campion marine. (they are currently working on a 44 foot carbon fiber version for racing)........i wonder if i can beg a ride ! ;)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

slowly ....the hull is emerging.

picgroup49008.jpg

the light in this concrete tunnel is funny for pics, so i tried to cancel the flash on my camera, so u could see the hull lines.

picgroup49009.jpg

as you can see...its getting really straight

picgroup49010.jpg

the strakes and chines are razor straight and sharp....its really a shame that we have to knock them down to accept a wrap of glass soon.

picgroup49011.jpg

to this point, sll the straightness of the hull has been because of really intense, hard, long board working......
this is dale doing some finess sanding on the bow.

picgroup49014.jpg

generally what happens is ....using all your weight and stregnth, starting at the transom, you sand in a sweeping motion from the strake to the keel. and back down again. then take a lunging step into the next sweep and continue down the hull, dale and i take about 5 passes each. we just follow each other, circling the boat. the walk from the bow to stern is the only rest you get. ! but it comes out really purty!

I own a larson cruiser with a stepped hull. It rides noticeably flatter and much quicker than similar boats its size.
