Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i didnt get much time on the boat yesterday....work got in the way.

this is where i left off....fairing the hull...

picgroup45002.jpg

one side is totally done...i just need to fine tune the strake and chine lines....the other just needs a skim coat of fairing compound

picgroup45003.jpg

the boat hull was also completely vaccumed in preperation for a skin coat on the hull

picgroup45007.jpg

im getting so close to finishing.....but the guys now tell me they cant gell coat till saturday.....so i might have to look for other possibilities

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hey oops! Checking back on some of my favorite threads after a few weeks away from the forum (needed to get boats off my mind for awhile). Nice progress! Can't wait to hear how she does in water trials.

Any more hints about that style 'theme' you mentioned, or is that still a closely guarded secret?

It's been hinted at many times in this thread, the theme is.......

So anyway, you still have a layer of 1708 and another skim coat of fairing to do before they can gel coat anyway, right oops!? Or did I miss something. Based off your estimates, you might not be ready for them to shoot on Saturday ;)

the skim coat will take 1 hr on the ext...and 3 for the hull.....but i keep running into blockages....my starter went on my truck....so i gotta crawl under there right away....and work is gonna have me outta town on thurs....so its gotta be done / tonight/tommorow...!

also the hull needs to be sanded....(glass sanding) so the hull is smooth as a baby for the gell to look any good.....more sanding

lets hear it for oops lousy time estimation talents...!!!

on a happy note......after the hull is done.....its just fair the cap....sand and paint......then....only then.....there is a possibility....i can put the grinder down for a while.....:D

more up dates coming guys....but my camera ran outta batts last night...i think i got 2 pics before it went....

gell coat is iffy for saturday....the guys backed out....but the local boat mechanic says he can and will do it..(hes an old glass guy)...but not a pro...!

the strakes turned out really good....as straight as i could make them.....and the hull looks good.......

currently im glassing the strakes....front to back with thick csm....i ran outta paint rollers last night or i would have glassed the whole hull.....

going to do that right now......so it can harden for sanding...ill work as long as i can on it tonight

ill post as soon as i can....

the rat! Backing out on you like that! Oh well, you'll end up polishing that gel coat yourself and putting another skill badge on your uniform. ;)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

a few more pics....just for the hull of it !

the hull must be faired....gellcoat is only 30 thousands of an inch thick....so it doesnt hide much......every grinding mark must be filled

picgroup46001.jpg

ya see?....it looks like a zebra on drugz !

picgroup46002.jpg

the strakes are getting better

picgroup46003.jpg

just a little more to do on them

picgroup46004.jpg

the bottom of the hull and the ext section will be wrapped with 1708....and then sanded smooth ....then faired

picgroup46006.jpg

these pics were early thursday night....theres more done...ill get more pics tommorow of the progress....

cheers

Lookin great as usual,

I was waxing my boat and thinking of your great project and had a question,
how come you are still painting the boat? because you are totally re gel- coating it.

im going to paint the color scheme......

plus....gellcoat needs a hard surface against it when it cures, or it wont shine like new boats.....(theres more to it than that.....but im too tired to fully explain) .....so well see what it looks like after buffing and polishing...if its not mirror finish.....ill paint the whole thing...
