Re: hull extension in progress with picks

is that the svfara factory? if so, can you say more?

yes it is.....svfara is produced just a few minits away from where i live.

composite one is having a factory training session there. (a session on how to use the products within tollerance limits.

somthing ive been looking foward to for some time, ondarvr was nice enough to save me a spot in the class......

actually, the guy that laid the first mold for the first svfara production boat was one of the guys that ok'ed my boat for the extension.

ill let you know how it goes on thursday, and take pics if im allowed.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Did you consider making a mold of the handrail ?

I've had decent results going around 90 deg corners by using cloth cut so the weave is 45 degs rather than 90 deg. It wastes cloth though.

i did consider it, but the caprail is not the same width for any decent legnth to pull a mold off, so i just built a shape and glassed it.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Glad to see that things are progressing well. Fabbing the cap looks easy this way. Much easier than the way we were trying when I was there a few weeks ago. Now I know how to do it, not that I will be trying that anytime soon.

Have a great day,

Rob.

its going so fast rob.....the only thing is i gotta wait between layups, as the cure will get too hot. i can only do 2 layers at a time. its just a bout finished. one more layer tommorow morning, and done.....:)

Oops, glad to see you're making progress. Cap is looking great. I am looking forward to see how you are gonna flip the monster. Keep it up my good sir it's looking Great!

TC

i would have posted pics of the cap extenson but they all look the same, as im just adding thickness of the cap.
the top of the cap is actually thicker than some parts of the keel !... so its taking a few days to glass it....right now, the last two layers are going on. that will completely over lap the glass to a one foot overlap each edge

picgroup38013.jpg

that will take the glass to the areas where the gell coat is ground off. a total of over 16 layers of glass

I want to see her flipped! Any idea on when its going to happen? And also are ya going to leave the cap on and the windshield on there also when ya flip it? Lets see!

drew, im sure the guy down the street from you has the same plan. the cap will be off the boat when i flip it, but it doesnt have to be, just all fluids out....its sooooo simple.........

in fact, ive moved up the flip day, i have all the guys coming tommorow at 6 pm to flip it,

i only need one person to flip it..... ill be posting on that in the main forum, and here in the thread.

the reason for the guys, is the cap is being moved to the electricians to be flipped and wired. i want all new wires and connections, so hes gonna do it in his back yard, the guys, after the transport, are gonna be there to flip the cap, when it gets to the electricians house

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

tommorow is going to be a big day, a long one on the boat. i will finish glassing the cap. then glass the deck in with a layer of csm. (2 if i can get the cure time)

i also want to glass in the motor mounts, they are cut to hull shape and ready to go in.

everything has to be cured before the 5 pm deadline. at 5 im gonna roll the boat out of the shop. and get ready to pull the cap. at 6 pm the flat bed will be there, and well load the cap. once the cap is loaded on the flat bed, ill flip the hull, and place it on the new cradles. and roll it back into the shop, then we'll all go to the electricians house and unload and flip the cap.

wish me luck.....pics tommorow night !....lots of em,

cheers

Whew, you are going to be humping it to get all that done. It took me 5 hours to glass my deck in yesterday on my little fishing boat.

Well, that certainly makes me feel better about it. I was hoping it would have been thicker material, but considering the whole roll for the money...I suppose I should figure out how to sell some of this stuff off and how to ship it ( map tubes? )

Glad you could identify it in the picture. I figured it had to be lighter than the stuff you were using as a base material for your work ( particularly the picture of the material laid out for the cap extension ). It's obvious that many layers would be needed to get structural strength out of this stuff....would I be insane to use it to build my new stringers with? I don't have a problem doing many many layers, which I'll obviously need to do with this stuff, but the way it feels and looks, I should be able to get 2-4 layers on at a time if I work it right without cooking the resin...sound about right? My original stringers just look like they took some very heavy mat and did one layer and called it good....not the plan I have in mind.

Red,

I pay about $5 per yard for the 1.5 oz. You stole the stuff. Go back and get the other roll and I am sure Oops and myself will split the roll, and pay for the shipping. If Oops does not want it, then I'll take it, because another project is just around the corner.

Have a great day,

Rob.

i would think you have at least 1000 yds there red.....really go back and get the other roll. rob and i could go into production with that stuff....it would hold us for a year or two....thats enough to build from scratch 2 or 3 boats at 20 feet and 1/2 inch keel.

that amount of glass would pay for your resto and a new 26 ray ! :D
heck.....at that rate....you could afford to go to the bbq you sent me !

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i didnt get in the boat as early in the day as i wanted, i got tied up so i didnt get on it till one pm, my time.

because of that i wasnt able to get the deck glassed , or the mounts for that metter.
however one of the main things i had to do was finish extending the cap...put the last two layers on it........

but then when i really looked at the cap....i thought id run another 2 layers od 1.5 oz csm before the 2 final layers of 1708.

so a total of 4 layers per side went on......because i had to hace the sides cured (or semi cured) before the cap came off.....it was a time to mix..."hot"

picgroup40002.jpg

if you look closly you can see the overlap on each layer

picgroup40003.jpg

note the air on the outside corners.......glass just doesnt like to go round sharp outside bends.......i would have worked iths air all out eventually if it was structural......but with the thickness of the cap layups... iwasnt too worried, as this is just cosmetic at this time.

picgroup40004.jpg

after the layup was cured....it was cut to size.....

picgroup40009.jpg

in that pic you can see the unresined glass....that was just over glass on the edge......as you can see, tha side area is fully resined out.

picgroup40011.jpg

my friends were on a "binge" and enjoyed being in every pic they could get into.

Looking good so far :)

How strong is the joint between the old cap and the new section?

How strong is the joint between the old cap and the new section?

i was shocked at the awesome stregnth.......

after we flipped the hull, we loaded the cap on to a flat bed, i orderded a 25 foot deck truck, but they sent a 20, with three feet un usable.

so when we loaded the cap on the truck, the entire extension section was hanging off the back of the truck deck...the joint was directally over the end of the deck....the driver drove over 2 miles with the cap extension bouncing around off the back of the deck, (we put 2 2x4s under it)......

when we got to the electricians and flipped the cap, i examined the cap for failure......it was perfect......ondrvr had a good look at it as well. aboslutly no signs of failure or fatigue.

that stuff is sooo strong.........when we were rolling the hull, i also had to lift the transom, all the stress went on the joint of the hull.......not even a creak or snap.

ok.....here come the hull roll pics

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i'll post a shorter more condenced version of this in the main general, boating forum. but this will be the full meal deal :D

a very big special thank you to ondarvr, without whos help, this project may not have been possible.

the first thing i had to do was take the boat off the trailer......

the garage has a chain attached to the floor by the transom

picgroup40013.jpg

a come-a-long was attached to the chain and a big lag bolt was screwed into the hull.

picgroup40012.jpg

then it was a simple matter of hooking up to the trailer and slowly driving/pulling the trailer out from under the boat. as the trailer came out, cradles were put in.

picgroup40058.jpg

picgroup40014.jpg

then we simply rolled the hull out side

picgroup40020.jpg

i didnt get any pics of the cap coming off, as we all were kinda busy at that time.

the cap was just sitting on the top of the boat. so we just slipped some 2x4s under the cap and walked it off the hull

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

picgroup40049.jpg

a fork lift and a flat bed with electric winch was used.

this is totally over kill, two trees can be used to flip a hull, but i needed the flat bed to move the cap after, so it was a natural chioce.

the key to rolling a hull, is a line from the bow eye, and a line from the transom. the height of the transom hook is crutial. if the balance point is correct, the hull can be flipped with one finger, and spun like a stick in a string.
i was able to put a eye hook on the new transom. but a line between the bow eye hooks will do just fine. the big thing is to get the balance point between the bow eye and the transom.

once out side, the winch from the flat bed was attached to the bow eye hook

picgroup40026.jpg

and the fork lift was attached to the eye hook on the hull.

picgroup40024.jpg

the slack was then taken up from the winch. this lifted the hull off the cradles

picgroup40027.jpg

the fork lift was then lifted

picgroup40028.jpg

the hull started to roll (heh heh heh...in that shot you can get a good idea of the thickness of the transom)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

we had a lot of people there, but mostly to flip the cap. the hull roll could have been done by 3 people........

one person can do it buy them self if totally nessary

picgroup40033.jpg

picgroup40034.jpg

im hoping you get the idea this is easy, because it is

picgroup40036.jpg

picgroup40037.jpg

then just lower it on the cradles

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

That cap pic looks like your boat sunk in the parking lot :) :)

It looks like a real boat, all right... strong hull, good lines, and all. I can't wait to see what she looks like when her hull is cleaned up and an interior goes in.
