Fairing, if it's anything like mudding and taping sheetrock...good luck buddy! I'm on my second week of trying to get my CLOSET done. Honestly, I'm about ready to either popcorn the whole thing, or rip all the tape and mud down and start over. Big props to the drywall guys!

Hey, at least you've gotten the "hard part" done! Of course, the "harder part" is ahead of you...this will show the quality of your work Oops!

I wonder if anyone would bother even paying to have something like this done?

Oh, and it's been 3 days since I touched that roll of cloth and I'm still getting the random itch.....Curse you fiberglass!!!

No kidding. I always end up creating a mountain of joint compound from all of the post mud sanding. If only they made a 10' wide trowel.

How do you clean the dust up?! I had the cloth filter over the foam one, and made a bigger mess than I had trying to vacuum it up! I guess I have to get a pleated filter?

Use a shop vac w/ a bag in it... The filter shouldn't matter with the right bag installed. Easy disposal that way too:)

Sorry oops! a little off topic

The filter will become saturated in no time. I have a shop vac with the blower hose. I run the hose to a garbage can with a a hole in the lid. I wrap a towel around the hole to let enough of the exhaust out, but won't let the dust out. I have also connected a dryer vent to the hose and just ran it outside the house.

The dryer vent works well on the intake side too. I duct taped it to the normal hose and ran it while I was grinding fiberglass. It sucks it up while I'm grinding. It doesn't get it all, but it does prevent most of that huge cloud that seems to hover for hours. I just run the exhaust hose outside the garage.

I was thinking along those same lines when I start working on mine. I've got a 16 gallon shop vac, should handle most of it, though I bet a good squirrel cage fan with intake/exhaust ducting would work better.

Guys - look in tool/industrial catalogs under "dust collection"... there are whole systems dedicated to doing this, complete with piping, collection bins, filters, and tool attachments.

If you just blow your dust outside, careful where it goes... you don't want it blowing on laundry, pets, or kids.

Nope, it would go into the 55 gallon drum I have with a filter on top of it. Air goes in, and goes out, but the floss filter holds the garbage from blowing all over the place. I'm not going the dust collection machine route....only if I had a garage would it be worth my while. I need portability and something I don't mind if I destroy.

Of course, today I decide to move the big roll of glass out of my truck. Had to pop the cap ( topper ) a bit to get it out, it was wedged in there pretty good. Dropped it on a tarp and then rolled it up in a sheet of plastic and then bound the plastic with shrink wrap style plastic wrap. I was going to use the kids old wooden wagon to pull it into the back yard, until the rear axle snapped off  So, I rolled it all the way back. Of course, then it rained like crazy while I was out grocery shopping and it got a little bit of moisture in part of it. I have to make a cradle to get the thing off the ground and so I can cover it properly. I'm itching to get to work on the boat....literally...again :D I gotta take a rest though. Work was so bad this week that I no longer have fingerprints from all the hand sanding I had to do for my job....raw fingers and fiberglass=no way.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok.....here we go....lots has happened, i now have two boats on the go. the capri is being done at the same time.....some gellcoat work and upholstery work.....

on thursday of last week, i was invited to the svarah boat production plant.

svarah is a very high end wakeboard boat.....about $90,000 worth

ondarvr was giving a master class on gellcoat repairs, there was about thirty people. including some long time glassers.

i got the full tour of the plant.

pickgroup41003.jpg

the classes themselves were fantastic i saw a gallcoat repair, done totally invisible.

ondarvr had mentioned a single repair could be done in as little as 28 minits start to finish. it was a total day of classes, so there was lot to absorbe. but ill be bringing up a lot of the concepts in this thread.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the net was so slo today that i couldnt finish the svfarah up date....
so heres a few more pics.......

these guys make a pretty snazzy boat

pickgroup41002.jpg

the hulls are a malibu copy/type......
they add quite a bit of extra stuff...

pickgroup41001.jpg

one of the things that sets svfarah apart is a water bladder that fills for extra weight. this is done by a huge fiberglass sealed container. you can fill it and drain it on command......man, they can take a lot of water....adding an easy 2500 lbs for a huge wake.....

this one just rolled off the line

pickgroup41005.jpg

and speaking of rolling....this is what we need to flip a hull....!!!!!

pickgroup41006.jpg

special thanks to ondarvr for the master classes

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

time for an up date or three !!!!!!

i hadnt got on the boat for a few days, as work had me doing lots of other stuff......

after the hull was flipped...i needed to find out how much hook/rock i had going on so i can fair the hull.

the 2x4 braces need to come off so i could start the grinding.

pickgroup41008.jpg

the layer of gellcoat that i had added when i first started the extension needed to be ground off, so the faring compound has a good bond to the hull, not just the 40 year old gellcoat.

pickgroup41012.jpg

i just love grinding.....
if you think glass is itchy....try gell coat !
at first i thought id just remove the gell from the plaining surface on the hull, but then i realized i needed to to take it off the sides as well.

check out that dust guys !

pickgroup41020.jpg

by the time i got done....allmost half the boat was stripped of the gellcoat......

pickgroup41011.jpg

its funny....even as i type this i can still smell the ground gellcoat.

i couldnt ever figgure out why some pics snowy like and some were clear
it just dawned on me when i took the above pics.....i had just finished grinding....there was still lots of dust in the air.....the snowy stuff is actually grinding dust settling.

i needed to fill any joint areas, as i wanted to add a layer of matt at the joints.
so i whipped up some new improved oops super dooper peanut butter..(pat pend...tm).....this stuff has 1/4 inch chopped strand in it

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i aslo filled any open screw holes and the threadded rod holes...

pickgroup41017.jpg

there was a lot of filling to do

pickgroup41016.jpg

the idea here is just to eliminate any low spots that would make glassing the joints air filled

pickgroup41018.jpg

im not looking for flat here....as im going to have to do some grinding when the stuff hardens....i just wanted to fill it

pickgroup41019.jpg

while i was waiting for the peanut butter to harden......i started looking at the keel...it was scrapped to the glass, pitted and in rough shape....so it need some new life

pickgroup41026.jpg

a layer of 1708 was pre cut....the entire keel

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

pickgroup41030.jpg

i also cut the glass for the joints of the extension section....on this....i used csm.....

pickgroup41034.jpg

after the glass was cut, and the peanut butter cured.....out came the grinder and smoothed the peanut butter filler.......the hull was acetioned for the new glass layer to come

pickgroup41028.jpg

when everthing was ready, i mixed some resin....i wanted a hotter mix, so i used a 2% ratio at 75 deg, and jumped on it

pickgroup41035.jpg

so the joints and the keel were glassed......its almost time for the farring :D

the farring is allmost the last step before gellcoat and paint

ill have a few more up dates coming soon

cheers

OOPS, you said you haven't had time to post because you had so much to do at work. Now you say you also took a gellcoating class, and you post all these pict's.

Do you ever sleep?

You don't have to slow down, just post one day of your work on the boat about once a month, spread it out over the next couple of years, and we can all feel like we are accomplishing half of what you are.

Man you make me look bad. ;-)

What color will you be using for the gelcoat? Or will it be a surprise?
