Re: hull extension in progress with picks

You know Oops, there's another way to do this... put the boat, wherever... fill the semi up with beer and park the semi near the boat. Make a sign that says 'beer for boat work'... the boat will be finished in no time.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

GOT ONE !

was down at malibu boats today, asking questions, looking, digging, asking more questions.

and across the street was a space for boat storage. a new company, just started, there empty right now, so i got the bay for $150 a month :D.

i know the owner messed up....he was on his calculator, at $13 a sq foot the figures came out to $1500, a month, but he said $150.......so it goes in tommorow at 5 pm. (if i get back from my vancouver trip, early enough).

I hope to be back by 1 or 2 pm.

but im still gonna get on her tonight, and take care of some small stuff, (form the cap, if the weather temp holds, i might get a layer of glass on it.

ok heres the plan.........ondarvr says, the farring of the hull will take 2 days for a pro. that means 16 days of 6 hrs a day for me.......(math courtsey of the murphy factor)

thats with the hull flipped, so we'll be seeing a pictorial of a easy way to flip a hull.

two days each for fabbing the benches, two days for fabbing the sun pad and rear bench. one day for fabbing the swim grid,

and a few extra days to fix all the hull gouges and srcatches.......

(you can really fly at that......i saw one gouge being repaired today at elite boat works by a pro.....huge gouge ....15 minits.....done).

while im doing the farring, the cap will go to my electrician. he can work on the cap while its flipped upside down....everything will be "bench height" for him....and he can fly thru it in his backyard.

it is possible the boat will see the paint shop by june 1 st.
then outta the paint shop and to the mechanics for the motor to go in.

im putting in the 4.3 for the time being, just to see how the hull responds, no point putting in a 383, just to find out the boat turns circles.

after the sea tryals, and every thing is ok, then the big stroker......

man....thats a load off my mind....:)

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Any updates on the updates? Did you start to try to flip her? Im going to be doing that myself when i get the stringers finished. I have been going verry slowly once that i came to the relization that im not going to get this thing done for a whyle. At least i have nice weather to work in. I know a guy that stores his 19' center console boat upside down. He has a rig where he backs his trailer up to it and there is a big pully that he hooks up too and then has 2 stabelizer ropes that are just hooked up whyle the boat is being flipped and 2 electric wenches and the whole thing turns upside down. Its pretty cool to watch it takes about 10 minites. The longest thing that he has to do is take the oil out of the oil injection tank under the cowl of his yamaha outboard. The boat is then upside down and rain cant get in then. Im half tempted to ask him to flip my boat for me and just put it on my trailer upside down. The guy that does this takes his motor off every winter though cause he does not want to leave it upside down like that for the whole winter cause the water in the cooling system will settle in the power head. Its a pretty cool set up though. Ooops keep us up to date. Hope your new shop is a decent place for you.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

sorry this took so long guys......

ok....here's the boats new home....

picgroup38004.jpg

well....the big bay door any how.... its in a fenced locked compound. 24 hour security, as its in the downtown industrial area.

picgroup38001.jpg

(that pic was taken the day i moved it. a week ago....you can see its loaded with stuff !)

the lights are kinda low, (vertical height) so its dark when the boat is on the trailer, and in the shop. but it will be perfect for farring the hull when she gets flipped.

yesterday, (its 1:30 in the morn here and i just finished all my pm's) was the first real day i had on the boat since i moved it....i had just unloaded the boat with all my gear and tools, when i had to go out of town on business.

so it was really great to get on it again.
i still had some stuff to take out of the boat....(plywood and materials)
so that took a couple of hours.

i didn't even take time to set up the shop. i just jumped in it and started working.

the first thing was to extend the cap....it was on the boat, cut. but just sitting there loosly screwed in place.

the first thing i had to do, was make a mold for the extension of the cap.
i started with the out ward edge of the cap, where the rub rail attaches to.

picgroup38005.jpg

i used one inch cedar strips. (the kind they use for lattice fencing) the cedar will not be part of the cap, but rather just part of the mold for the cap.

then i had to line it up straight and screw the wood to the cap.

picgroup38006.jpg

alignment at this stage, is important, but not crucial, as this is the under side of the cap. there will be a lot of farring once the cap is complete.

this part of the mold will be removed. so it needs a releaseing agent. i didnt want to use waxed arborite in such thin stripps. (the arbourite is the mold, and needs to be waxed a few times, to release the casting when complete).....the thin strips of arbourite would have neeb a pain to cut, and very weak

so i needed somthing "high tec" for the release agent. the only part of theis mold that needs to be released, is the skinny "cap edge"

i needed somthing that will fit between the cap and the hull but will not allow a bond, it also had to be flexible, as it would wrap the cedar strips.
i came up with somthing really high tec.....

picgroup38008.jpg

it is working great.

I love those items that are so hi-tech that you have to go to a grocery store to buy it.. Good job!

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

heh heh heh.....when yer boat building. do what ever the manufactures do.....use whats there...or what ever you can scrounge !

its crazy....in the early days, the used old pallet wood for stringers, big chunks of scrap styrofoam for flotation, they just grabbed what ever they could !

i fell asleep at the puter posting the update last night .....:D so heres the rest.

the wax paper was then tapped to the side of the hull,

picgroup38009.jpg

then peices were cut for the top of the gunwhales
this is just 1/4 inch ext grade ply. it doesnt need to be sealed from water intrusion from the back side, as the origonal 40 year old ply was in really good shape

picgroup38010.jpg

with the cap on the hull, alignment of the peices was fairly easy

picgroup38011.jpg

at that time i decided id better grind out the joint area, and feather it to accept the thick layers of cloth. so again, just as on the hull, I feathered the joints.

picgroup38015.jpg

i also added a brace to the bottom, this will hold the cap in the correct position till the first layer of glass cures

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

then peices were cut for the side support

picgroup38016.jpg

i was starting to get really excited during this phase. finally the boat was starting to feel like a boat again,
(even tho the deck still needs to be glassed in, the fuel cage in the bow needs to be installed, and the cap needs to come off for flipping and electrical work.)....... i got to see the shape and the look of the new hull.

picgroup38017.jpg

after all the peices were in, i stood back, rechecked final alignment, did some minor grinding, and acetoned the old glass.

i then pre cut the glass....the first layer, is 1.5 oz chopped matt. after that, it will be the big 1708

picgroup38018.jpg

it was starting to get late, (11:pm) but i wanted the first two layers on,

so i mixed some resin and had atter !

picgroup38019.jpg

again, as before, glass doesnt like sharp corners. this is the first layer, so it is important is is good.
i wasnt liking the way the edges were looking.

i know from past experiance, its better to stop, remove what you just did when wet and throw it away or wait till cure and grind it out. in this case. wait till cure was the correct solution.

you can see the sharp corners here

picgroup38020.jpg

on this step, it is not imperitive, of a good bond to the substraight, (plywood). but it is imperative to get the shape right.

if the shape isnt right, there will be too much grinding, after the whole thing is done. the top cap is actually thicker that the keel was.....go figure? but i think i can have it finished today.

more updates tonight !

cheers

Where is the frige? Its gotta be getting warm there so you need something to keep the beer cold! Otherwise it will taste skunky like you left it out back of the shed under a blue tarp it the blistering hot sun then put it in the freezer for 10 min to cool it off! LOL Ya need one of those dorm refrigerators. Or a kegorator for 1/4 kegs of corona, with a little cooler on top to keep the lime wedges fresh! Good job and im glad to see you back at it. You really motivate me to get my a.. outside and get working! Thanks bud!

heh heh heh, one of the things i am adding, is a hidden cooler. i was gonna put it in the space between the hull and deck...(deep in the floor).....but mannnnnn thats just too far to bend down for a beer. ya gotta get on yer hands and knees to grab one.

so im building it into the bench seat right behind the swivel captains chair. :D

right now, in the shop, im using a cooler with ice......

thats the only really good thing about a canadian winter..........chilling beer at -20........(7 below 0 F) ....is done in a snap outside :D

Full size kegerator in house; fridge in utility room for the spare keg.
Wife don't like me in the house dirty, so fridge in the shop, also.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

its weird now doing this. im at the shop 3 times a day for an hour each time..... glassing builds up so much heat when its curing, that i can only do 2 layers of 1708 at a time.......

picgroup39014.jpg

i ground out all the air spots in the last layup....and went back over it with 1708......

picgroup39016.jpg

i used the last of a whole roll of 1708 tonight, (except for a few scraps)
man....thats a lot of cloth in that boat......

picgroup39011.jpg

im just about done the cap extension. another few layers overlapped on the old glass....and done......

i stood back and looked at it again......i just cant believe it was such a short boat before i started.......

Picture001.jpg

picgroup39013.jpg

just a day or two more .....then ill flip the hull !

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hi OOPS,

this is my first post, in my favorite thread on this board!

... and they said it couldn't be done!

These are my favorite kind of projects, the kind that make people look at you funny and laugh when you explain what you are going to do, and then won't talk to you anymore when you do it.

Nice work! Keep the pictures coming! I can read, but I am a visual person by nature. It is like someone telling you about a beautiful women, it is just not the same as seeing her yourself. ;)

Your boat is starting to look like some kind of “Retro Cigarette” and I love it.

Cheers,
Snapping Turtle

How much is more?! How much did you buy in the first place ( yds )?

I'm wondering how much I should buy to do 3 stringers and my transom.
