Never really seen cedar glue lam before. Those beams are structural, and have not seen much cedar used for structure. Most of it is pine, spruce, fir or hemlock. My guess is the beam is doug fir.

Have a great day,

Rob.

i dont have time to post a full up date, as i have to go in to work for a little bit, then get to the boat.

but i thought id share a few pics with ya.

we flipped the cap in preperation to cut and extend it.

picgroup34004.jpg

then out came the saw....

picgroup34008.jpg

(yup...thats me !)

after the cap was cut, you guessed it....more grinding.....

picgroup34013.jpg

( after his super rebuild proj, robj liked the idea of someone else doing the grinding for a change.....:D :D)

. ill have more updates on what all happened, and more progress coming soon.

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the weekend is still kind of a blur, as far as the boat goes.....

robj came to help. (i think he was a bit taken a back by the scope of the total restoration....or the amount of work in it :D)

the cap is a two person job .......so......the idea was to get the cap extended.

the plan was to cut the cap and place braces down the sides, and bottom.

after cutting the cap and grinding the surfaces in prep for the new glass,
we ran into a snag.

we tryed to line up the cap, but the extension has changed the natural line of the hull, and we could not get a good line down the side.

we tryed a few different ways, but the 2x4s were just too strong and flowing lines were illusive.....noklu (from i boats) showed up un announced, so we actually had three i boaters in the same garage. :)....i thought that was kind of cool, as it happened in bc canada...i could see it in a major center.....but bc?

so with all of us scratching our heads.....we just talked and called it a day.

i thought about the problem all night and came up with a new plan, so sunday it was take no prisoners day. the plan was to form the cap extension and finish the sole.

after the huny do list was done, i jumped in the boat at 430 and started working on the sole....

picgroup35003.jpg

every peice was, pre sanded, pre leveled, and pre screwed, this way the screw holes in the stringers and frames could be filled, before the final screw down.

the glass was pre cut for the underside

picgroup35004.jpg

all the deck was wet out (the underside)

picgroup35005.jpg
.

the glassing of the under deck is uasually unnessary. a good resin coat will do. but the deck is only 1/2 inch and i had lots of 1 oz matt....so.... what the heck?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

while i was waiting for the slo cure on the deck, (alowing the resin to saturate the wood)

the boat was swept, and vaccumed for the last time :)

then the stringers were capped with glass

picgroup35006.jpg

i used 1708 for this

picgroup35007.jpg

while the stringer tops were still wet, i screwed down the wet out cross frames

picgroup35008.jpg

added the deck and done........im not going to glass it in right now....as im wating to get the cap on the boat before i glass the deck.

picgroup35009.jpg

in between times of kicking, curing, cutting, glassing, noklu and my dad dropped over to lend a hand with the cap.

to get the shape of the hull, plywood was used to flow the lines easer.

picgroup35010.jpg

the stringline was used to get the back of the cap centered in exactally the right spot. then screwed the cap at the five foot extension distance.

after this was done, it was time to go home.

i talked to ondarvr today......(on-the-river) and he suggested i build the cap on the boat as opposed to a bench set up. we both decided that might be the best approach as, even if i get the cap lined up perfectially on the bench, boats arent symetrical, so it might not fit properly.

tonight at 7 pm, the boys are coming to flip the cap on the boat, and wrestle it on the boat.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Glad to hear that things are progressing. Unfortunately when I was there Saturday, with the cap we took two steps forward, and one backward. I guess that is the way it goes sometimes. The pictures don't really do this project justice. You can tell it is alot of work, but after having spent 1/2 a day there, it is just overwhelming. Oops you get full credit for taking on such a task. I know I don't have what it takes to do what you are doing. Rebuild part OK, but the extension, wayyy out of my league, and to try and finish it for the summer, WOW!! It was kind of nice watching someone else grind for a change. Stayed away from that, but still managed to get a bit of a fibreglass itch. Oh well. Hope the cap goes on today better than when we tried on Saturday (we heard some cracking when trying to flip it onto the boat and quickly decided that was not the way to do it). Will be up there again in 3 weeks, if the weather gets better. This time the wife won't be coming so may have a little more time to give a hand.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Oops, of course I have been following your build all along.
After all the turmoil of capping those stringers a week or two ago you suddenly just CAPPED THEM, one sentence, how did you get the 1708 to wrap?.
Great work, fun to watch.

i didnt bud....i just made sure the deck was making contact with the stringers.....laid the 1708 over the stringers, wet it out as best i could, waited to tack, then dropped the deck on em. (then i jumped up and down on em. till i thought they were glued....   :D :D

lol.....:D

if i had more time...and i didnt have to move the boat in two days.....

i would have wrapped them in one oz matt about 4 times...the lighter csm will make the turn.......

then a layer of 1708 hanging on to it.

but the sole had to be in before i move the boat later this week.....now i have to get the cap finished by wednesday...

cheers bud

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I know this was Bass-Ack-Ward, but I had wrapped the tops with 8oz cloth prior to installing the strings, I have been debating whether to attempt another wrap to cap.

What do you think?

I would hate that deadline you have been faced with on moving shop.

I got stalled on my rebuild, had a person quit work with no-notice which has forced me to work 16hr days, not much time to build boats after that, have managed to get 3 coats of resin on the sole, so they are ready for me to jump up and down on too.
Thanks for all your help,
Lund

heh heh heh....my name is ward

it depends on the bond on the origonal wrap.....was it good or lots of air?

was the stringer fully cured with resin?

the second wrap will be easyer as your wrapping glass. but if your wrapping air....(ie ...the first layer is not touching the glass at all) it will hardly make a difference.....

i know the feeling.....btdt....or...... two staffers arguing over what supplies are "theirs"........my responce.......i own all the supplies.....get the job done !

your doing good lund....:)
keep it up

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

oh a happier note......

rob j, no klu and i were trying to line up the cap......had trouble....then we finally got it formed. i was worried about how many layers of glass i could lay on the mould with out building up too much heat. i didnt want the poly to go brittle on me....

i wanted to glass 10 layers on each side of the cap. as they were short sections.....(5 to 6 feet) glassing would have been a breeze.....

i pm'd ondarvr.....he replyed immeadatly....then called...within seconds....

within another few seconds....he put me on the right track....he saved me hours and hours of work....

rvr said to build the cap on the boat. ..........that means i had to call in the team......

we had allready cut the cap, so it was flimsy, i needed 7 guys to re flip the cap, and place it on the boat.

we were kinda busy...so i didnt get pics of that process.

picgroup36024.jpg

the cap isnt formed yet....thats todays job.....

picgroup36026.jpg

we had to break down the crane to get the cap on, and to make moving the boat easyer.

picgroup36020.jpg

of all the origonal things on the boat...im keeping this one
