Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hi all & esp Opps,
New to site and stummbled here. Good read. Got me glued. You've come a long way in a short time.

Reminds me of when my Dad built his first 2 boats in the back yard from bought plans. Second one was a stretch of the first one.

Got me glued.

Anything is better than nothing and a stalled project, especially when you are closing in on completion. I hear ya on the idea of knowing when it is strong enough. There were a few opportunities to buy a boat in better shape for a really good price lately, one happened to be my exact boat, on a better trailer, WITH a motor for $1950. I was really tempted, but I was tempered when I realized that I'd probably end up ripping the floor out, doing the transom and the stringers anyway. I might as well stick with mine and KNOW it is built well enough and that I won't have to worry about the hull as long as I own the boat. You ain't kidding about the strength of the keel though

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

well guys the move didnt go well......

the cradles worked great on the smooth concrete floor....

but failed as soon as the going got bumpy.

noklu has been super in helping.
we got the boat half way out of the garage when they failed, so we rebuilt them....3x....but the wheels just wont take the gravel bumps......

im going to have to get some floor jacks and large wheeled dollys. if i cant find any to rent....ive gotta make some....any hoooooo, the boat is still half way out of the garage.

my girl was there helping, and at 11 30 pm she was just about done for the evening.....so we decided to do it tommorow....(the new owners will have to wait).....just then she found out she had locked her keys in her car....
luckly i had all sorts of tools there.....10 minits and the threadded rod....and we were on our way......

ive got pics of the extended trailer. ill be posting those some time tommorow

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Sorry to hear that the move did not go well. Darn Murphy keeps showing his ugly head. Do you know any loggers with self load logging trucks? Get a few straps around the hull and use the crane to lift it onto your trailer. They are not working now so you may be able to work out a good deal. Just an idea. Hope today goes better for you.

EDIT: If you try and lift it with a crane, you will need to use spreader bars otherwise it may/will break the sides. Maybe lifting it is not that easy.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

hi rob....welcome home.....:)

the stupid thing is, we had to disassemble the crane i had. i couldnt move the boat with the crane being in the way......

we think a couple of floor jacks and large wheeled (10 inch) dollys will work....

we have to back the boat out of the garage, spin the bow, then line it up with the trailer.

the other problem, is the new 5 foot extension on the trailer, has no hull support, just one bow roller ahead of the extension. so the bow will tend to nose down in that section of the trailer......but thats what the floor jacks are for.

the good news is .....the shop is mostly cleared out of everything, just boat parts and some rolls of glass i want to throw in the boat, ....so once the boat is on the trailer......the rest of the move is a snap.....(i hope )

cheers

Could maybe use a couple of those dollies they use to move snowmobiles around. I would think there heavy duty enough since a snowmachine is no light toy.....All ya'll up there in Canada have snowmobiles..right

Bah, just tack a couple of 4x4's on it and bolt some wheels to it. Just drag it along behind your truck with a long rope like a duckie :D

I guess I really don't see why you couldn't nose it out. must be something in the pictures that I'm not seeing...that sucks. Getting it on the trailer...you going to just crank and slide the best you can while supporting the boat at the rear the best you can? How long does it take for all that fiberglass to harden enough to take the stress?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Bummer

I had a 18' bass boat hull I picked up once.
Got it in the shop, got it set up on blocks, then f/g ed in a homemade cap, live wells, etc.
Then had a cow when I priced controls and a 230 hp outboard.
By now, it was HEAVY. And pointed were I couldn't get it past my Duster (on jack stands, with so much welding going on, that it couldn't be moved.
Ended up taking an old rear end from a car, borrowed another, rigged it all up, slide both under the boat, and with jacks, got it out.
I feel your pain.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

sorry guys....i been kinda busy the past few days.....

on the 30 th.....i had the trailer extended.......with the i boats crews advise. i had it done in the spot suggested....

picgroup37005.jpg

ill still have to add rollers, and fix the rest of the trailer, add longer bunks, ect

picgroup37006.jpg

picgroup37004.jpg

i had a fantastic day yesterday......

no klu and i had to rebuild the cradles with large wheels, so by the time we got the parts, it was noon......

we got to the boat at one pm and started to build the cradles......2 3/4 inch peices of ply screwed togeather with the big wheels on them.....

it was really nice out, so we worked outside......

after the cradles were built, we pushed the big boat out and lined it up with the trailer. the only way to get it on the trailer, was to hand crank it on.....so i attached a come along to the bow eye, and one to the trailer, and started cranking, .....and cranking.....

picgroup37007.jpg

my arms were tired so we took a few breaks in between....it went on with out a problem......

at one point, i stopped, the hull was on the trailer, and the whole extension section was hanging off the back of the trailer. just hanging there with 8 feet off the end......the boat didnt even creak once......

just after we got it on the trailer, ondarvr, showed up ! :).....
he was in town for the day, we had to load the boat with stuff from the shop, so he rolled up his sleeves and we got after it, a few minits later and the shop was empty ! in the mean time , mrs oops showed up as well, and we all had a great visit.

so now, i just have to find a new shop......im still looking, the kelowna area is booming, so shop/commercial space is at a preimum. everyone wants 15 bucks a foot, and im not prepaired to spend that kind of cash for a month....so the search continues.....

cheers

Glad to hear you didn't hear anything out of the boat. Seems to have passed the initial stress test, eh? :D

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hey now, I've got a question ( yeah, like that hasn't happened before in this thread already by me )

I never did read, or ask...why did you decide on extending the boat 5 feet? It's kind of an odd number. I mean, you could have made it anything you wanted to really. Was there some mathematical reason for it? Did you have a certain interior layout that required 5 feet, or did it just sound like a good number at the time?

( just trying to do my part to keep the high drama going :D )
