Finally got a chance to get on this site and check in (been busy with work). Oops, can you just buy a SEI drive? Do they sell them up there?

hey cptkid.....

looks like im eventually gonna have to go to a sei.

robj correctly discovered that the race in the front of the drive is the wrong one...so that is getting repalced....but the pinion gear that drives the prop shaft is a little worn....it might last a season or two........but the sei or if i can find a good insurance write off....a bravo set up is gonna be the long time cure.

i hope to have it on the water again this weekend

you betcha....!!!

i have my eyes open......i see insurance boats all the time going cheap......did i say cheap.....i mean give away stupid cheap.

the last one was a 08 malibu with tower and all the trimmings .....final price......$6100.

so every night i go to the docks and do a storm dance in hope of some really great boat washes up on the shore......lol

well.....wish me luck....i pick up the lower unit in a hour....back to the welders....it leaks....wont hold pressure. (the welder says he will have it fixed in a few minits)

then its put the uppers and lowers togeather install it....fire it up and go for a shake down.....

if you dont hear from me for a few days it is because i am broken down still floating in the lake somewhere.

robj.......can you come up and bring the jet ski to tow me back to shore?....lol

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

well......murphy still lives around my boat...thats for sure !

first off......as you know....the uppers seized first time out on the water this year.....the uppers were toast and the lower was the cause....so....the whole drive was shot.

i had a new set of uppers (good thing i swapped the uppers from the new set to the old set before testing !)

i have never seen a set of uppers seize this hard

check out the drive shaft !

this is the new set and how the shaft should look.

well after a tremendous 4 hour fight......i got he drive back together and on the boat. everything went wrong from a bad water feed tube to the pump on my oil can being faulty.

i finally got it on othe water for its full hour shake down.......after 10 mins....i pulled it back on the trailer checked the drive oil.....back in the water for another 50 mins.....back on the trailer.....check the oil......good to go.

then i had a few passengers on board for fun relaxing times.....exactaly what i built it for.

now for the interior build !

Nice!

How did the drive seize again? Did the oil leak out?

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

the lower uniot on the drive was left in the up posisition.....it was moved after i winterized it....

so water got into the lower and cracked the casing......the casing was welded up, and the weld failed, letting water into the lower...this caused the uppers to seize after 30 mins of boating.

Ok now I understand. My question is, where/how does water get into the drive if it's left in the up position?

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

water ill enter thru the scoops for the raw water cooling on the lower unit

the vents are on the lower unit....forward of the prop shaft.

asembly-shifter-rigging119.jpg

if left in the trailer posisitition......water from rain, melting snow will pool in the lower unit....and then freeze.....this will crack the lower unit housing.

it can be welded......but if the welding is not done correctly and the unit is not pressure tested. (the welder said he put pressure to it and it held....i believed him instead of pressure testing it myself. that cost me a set of uppers and 2 months on the water !
