Re: hull extension in progress with pics

Hey Oops! I've learned a ton from your thread. I'm just finishing the demo phase on my boat and ready to start with the FG. I have a number of places where I will be tabbing in new FG structures (coolers, stairs, etc) to existing deck and gunwales. I will be using poly resin. Will that bond with the existing gel coat or do I have to remove all of the gel coat first?

Hey Oops this is one hell of a thread. Hell this is the whole robe!!! 3 years on this? Dang I would have lost and found parts a half dozen times by now! So when is your ETL? (estimated Time till Launch) Good or bad or whatever you must have the video cam rolling. Amazing work on this. Takes balls to quit talking and dreaming and start cutting!! I will stay tuned...

hey cap.....im on your thread and watching you......you need to remove the gellcoat.....glass glass, to glass....nothing in between.....the bond should be glass on glass.....just a quick grind in those areas.....remove the gellcoat....and the top layer of resin only.....then tab away. (remember to clean with acetone)

it just needs the interior to be finished....
i hope to be done with that this winter, as i want to do it on my kitchen table....after that,,,its just painting the logos on the side.....that is just a few hours and a quick shoot.

the main problem is that i have been so busy fixing other peoples boats (clients) that i have no time for mine....lol.

Hey oops, I've read over your thread a few times and noticed several times you mentioned doing a "stepped" hull. I'm kind of new to boat building and was wondering what exactly a stepped hull is. I might be doing some glass work over the winter and will definatly be referring to your thread for advice. Thanks again for all the great information and great documentation.

Re: hull extension in progress with pics

hi bud.....the glass info on the thread is great.....we had several in depth conversations on how to glass, and the guys really came thru with good stuff. so i hope it helps any body that reads it.

as far as the stepped hull......i have been trying to down load images of it for a while.....but firefox keeps crashing on me.....maybe you will have better luck.

http://www.vectorpowerboats.com/Downloads_files/31609_eprint.pdf

the link was supplied by friscoboater......it is a powerboat magazine article that is featuring vector power boats....
the vector......or bat boat......was designed by a guy named oke mannerfelt.....and vector got the rights to manufacture the hulls. (vector is here in kelowna, and is owned by a guy named rex........rex has ties with campion boats....but is mainly concentrating on building the vector.

the hull design allwos air to be sucked under the hull....thusly....the hull rides on a cushion of air, rather than water......this reduces drag signifantly......and allows as much as a 5 mph increase with the same power.

the height and the distance between the steps is crucial for top performance.

you will see many new boats with the stepped design......especially in the over 27 foot range.
most of the production steps today are mostly cosmetic, and help performance a bit but are mostly just a sales feature
the formula for the step height, weight to length ratio is a well kept secret, so but nothing like the engineered performance of the oke step design.

if you look really closely at the water line of the pic below......you will see two indents of the hull at amidships and the 3/4 point of the hull.....the real treat is under water.
this is the vector "bat boat"

HB907_DS_SPBR_0051.jpg

in this one....you get a better look at the steps in a speed situation

HB907_RS_VTRB_0042.jpg

another thing about this boat....is the fact that the pics were taken about 75 mph.......look closely at the girls hair.......its not moving at 75 !
the cockpit is almost completely wind proof

And DONE...only took me a couple of months on and off to read the entire thing! Awesome stuff here, I look forward to seeing your boat finished... I am really itching to practice some fiberglassing so I can do some on my boat but its getting cold now and I don't have anywhere warm to work... oh well I will keep reading and learning until the weather is right...

Thx for sharing!

WOW, 10K posts and a 173 page thread dedicated to your boat, not too shabby if I say so myself.

Thanks for "paying it forward" with your expertise and helping out others with "those" glassers
