Re: hull extension in progress with picks

WOW I feel like I just ran a marathon reading this thread over the last month. Opps all I can say is what an amazing person you must be to tackle a project of this magnitude and still manage to stick with it to the point that you are so close to having the monster on the water. Makes my little deck and stringer replacement seem like childs play. Anyhow am fairly new to iboats and am thrilled to find such a great group of folks here. Best of luck and I hope she gets "wet" soon.

Great photos!
Man, you've come a loooong way. I can't blame you for getting to the water sooner than later. When you do slide her in the water, I hope you'll get pictures of her underway, both from inside and from a chase boat.

That's a real 'Glass Act'.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok.....after the relitaves left....i got to do some work on the boat...in between being chased back into the shop by severe thunder showers...lol

here is a over all shot of the boat right now.

asembly-shifter003.jpg

and here is the steering wheel that noklu was talking about....
lol....i like it.

asembly-shifter001.jpg

by the way......yesterday i had to make some under the dash supports and do some more playing with the gas tank.....
this is a piece of under dash support....ill post pics of the whole thing soon.

asembly-shifter002.jpg

ok....so my job today was to install the shifter and a few other things....

the first thing was to cut out the shifter hole....

a lot of times....they give you a template for this kind of stuff.....but unless you have tracing paper you have a hard time getting the template on the piece to be cut....

i like to use painters tape....you can still see thru it just tape the template right on the surface

asembly-shifter004.jpg

for this install...i used a drill....a rotary saw....and a jigsaw.

here i had allready drilled the four mounting holes

my rotary saw had the wrong bit in it and was working really slo....in fact burning the glass....not cutting it....so i switched to the jigsaw and the drill......it is really hard to make the sharp corners with the jig saw.....so i drilled holes at the corners....allowing the blade to turn properly

asembly-shifter006.jpg

in no time at all.....its done

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the shifter i chose is the teleflex ch1700.....it is available here at i boats.

asembly-shifter008.jpg

teleflexes directions left a lot to be desired....lol...they were for people that install shifters every day......i showed them to the mech that shares the shop....he looked at the instructions and shook his head.....

ok....so....the first thing is to prepair the cables with the adjustment pin.

asembly-shifter009.jpg

the pin is then held into place on the actual shifter by a cotter pin....it attatches to the shifter in one of the three holes you see at the top of the photo......

the placement of the cable end will vary with the manufacturer of your motor...or wither you have push or pull cables.

asembly-shifter010.jpg

that black thing is a cable holder......this is attatched to the shifter mechanism via a pivot bearing....it holds the outer cable in place, so the inner cable can move freely.

asembly-shifter011.jpg

this clip locks the cable into place in the harness....

asembly-shifter012.jpg

the cap holds the whole thing together and is fastened by two screws.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

here is the whole thing assembled....

yoiu can see duplicate bolt patterns on each side....(top and bottom, forward and aft) this is because some mechinisms have push cables or pull cables....the oppisite sides will allow you to change the configuration to what ever you need...actually a really good system....i really like the shifter.

asembly-shifter014.jpg

well....as usual ...the template was not quite correct...it needed a little fudging for the trailer up down switch....

asembly-shifter015.jpg

actually lining up the body and bezel was quite a chore by myself....espically with 23 foot cables dangling off the end of this thing...

i also got chased out of the boat three times by a thunder storm that was in the area....lol....i would just get set up to work....then the rain started coming really hard...so ya pack up the power tools and run for cover....
after 1/2 hour it stops....so you load the tools back out just in time for the lightining to start when you are hanging on to a jigsaw while standing in water...lol....then the rain...so ya pack up and get back inside....lol

it look me 2 hours to screw the thing into place....:D

asembly-shifter016.jpg

sorry i didnt get a better close up of the finished shifter...ill have one for you tommorow....i was running from rain again..

so the command cockpit is allmost finished....just a few lose ends....and some more wireing....and then its the engine.

oh....one thing i forgot to mention....yesterday i cut out the speedo and tach ....and for some screwy reason....i cut them too big?????

so i have to fabricate some bezel mounts for them...after all that work on the dash....lol....but it still looks good...

cheers

yeah....i felt like a sailor with all the words comin outta my mouth...

measure twice cut once.....i used a coffie cup to do the measurements.....it fit perfectally....but when i cut it....i forgot to cut inside the line....i just cut the line.

that little bit, messed me up just enough to make the instllation shoddy.....

ill be cutting the bezel overlaps today......i really dont wanna glass in a new backing plate and re cut.!

oh well.....lets see what today brings.

Nice work throughout on the 19'...er...I mean 25' Sea Ray oops...sorry to hear about the oversize holes in the dash. You are just tryin to live up to the name oops a little too much.

Thanks for the info in this thread...I want to rebuild a fiberglass hull someday thanks to folks like you, redfury and those kids out your way that are working on the 28' rig:D

Have you considered offering your own personalized line of "how to" videos on boat restoration? Get Bond-O on board to explain all the mechanicals and I think you've got a winner of an idea. You could of course include waterskiing best practices and tips in the videos as well:)

Have you thought about pulling all of the guages and putting a solid piece of black plexiglass behind them all as a dash accent. That would easily solve the oversized hole cut issue.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

You must have ordered your throttle a while back. Thats the exact one I want to install on my boat, but its showing out of stock here on iboats, and most everywhere else as well.

And the beast/strip club of the waves is looking great. :D

Hey Oops,

Just getting caught up here!

What the "hay" is going on down there with the beast?

NoKlu: I think that the steering wheel is a bit "rustic" but will be massaged into a work of Oops art as long as he is feed the right nutrients from a clear bottle!

Are you around the shop this week Oops? I will have to drop by and say hi even more so now that I missed you a couple of weeks ago!

Let me know wassup!

BTW, to all those who didn't catch the other cool thread that Oops started, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=349908, Mrs. Yar gave birth to my son Nathan on Sept 1st. He is a healthy 9lb, 3oz keeper:D

Cheers,
Yar.
