dont know ho0w shes gonna float till she gets in the water loaded........we pre floated last summer....it looked super...level....and sitting flat...even possibly a little to high in the water......however the motor will be all the difference....the gas tank is a bow tank....so it will help with the weight distrubition.

however....when a new boat is built.....they dont know how its gonna sit either.....they use tryal and error to determine the best place to sit things like the battery. they even go as far as adding lead weight to the hull to balance the load.........my lead weight is just the transom...:D

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

well.....i took the boat back to vernon and got a ton of pics of kal.....but before i post those......an update

with the dash consoles finally in.....i had to fair them and sand them a sfe thousand times to get them baby smooth

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx017.jpg

all holes were filled ....this is on the bow deck where the gastank vent was......im moving them, so the hole had to go.....i filled it with peanut butter and milled fibers...as well as some chopped strand with longer fibers.....then i used some fiberglass spot filler to remove any small scratches left form sanding down the fiberglass

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx018.jpg

everything was sanded smooth by starting at a 120 grit scuff....then a 220 then finally up to a 320 grit.

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx019.jpg

sanding the consoles was a real challenge

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx020.jpg

that front lip was a real challenge beacuse of the tight sanding areas

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the extended cap rails were a real pita to fair

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx022.jpg

because there was no consistand guide to go by.....each layer of fairing compound was a real pain to get straight.

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx023.jpg

the sharp corners were made from a drywall corner knife

in preparation for paint....i went over every inch of the top cap....looking at it form less than a foot away....and felt every inch if it looking for minor boles or imperfections to fill.....these areas were then marked with a pencil

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx024.jpg

after all the filling....the cap was vaccumed then cleaned with a damp rag....and re checked

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx025.jpg

this is a problematic area .....aft....above the transom

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the reason that the back was problematic .....was because that is where i was mixing all the filler.....so anything that dripped....or spilled.....it was there....si i actually sanded that area with a grinder.

mrs oops dropped in to help with the prep and paint

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx027.jpg

this was the last shot before paint.....you can see how smooth the cap rail is

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx028.jpg

using the roll and tip method.....we applied the marine enamel paint.

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx032.jpg

unfortunatly....it was so hot there that the pain was drying with in 2 minits....yep....two minits.....by the time mrs oops rolled it....and i came behind her to tip the paint....it was starting to dry....the result......the roughest first coat ever.....with paint roller fuzzies in it...

randomsummerpicsandboatwerx031.jpg

i had spent a huge amount of time making every inch of that boat super smooth.......after all....a good paint job starts with good prep right?....well the paint ruined the prep....but.....keeping my chin up....ill be doing some wet sanding right away.

I can see that Mrs Oops is in the right spirit of things. Great progress with the top cap and dash. I don't look as frequently as I used to because it's too exhausting. It reminds me of my younger days. No amount of effort was too great to try to get it right. That was then. Today I can do no less, so I just don't tackle the big ones~~~~well, almost!:p

Hey, the boat's all one color! :D

Hey Ward, the custom dash looks awesome. I'm going to tackle mine this winter when I don't have anything that I can do because of the snow. What did you do to get it to fit over the original dash? I was thinking may be I'd have to wax the crap out of mine, lay some mat on it and the wax that and lay some mat in that to make a replica of the dash I have to work the new dash out of...but that seems like a helluva lot of work, just to make a dash...

Mine originally came with a plastic piece that was the dash, over the existing fiberglass mold, but that is so brittle, it's worthless now.

im getting so sick of sanding....and i finally realized why....its been over a year in sanding phase,,,(a little hiatus for the winter)...but most of the time sand...sand ...sand.
im looking forward to the re assembly phase...back to the one or two hour jobs that you can see progress.

i used construction foam......cut a bunch of peices.....held it togeather with tooth pics...

interior2session2115-1.jpg

.then carved away anything that didnt look like new dash.....

and
interior2session2119-1.jpg

once i had a real rough shape...i started sanding...

interior2session2124-1.jpg

if i decided to add somthing to it....i just put another chunk of foam on it and held it togeather with tooth pics.

interior2session3023.jpg

interior2session3022.jpg

after i had the shape i wanted...i wrapped the thing togeather with packing tape.....then glassed over the tape.....so i now had a glass shape....then i just ripped out the foam........then i glassed the new parts to the cap....and started fairing the new parts.

but all in all....a lot of sanding.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

well its 5 am here and i just got back from the boat....its white......lol

ok.....yesterday....er i mean the day before yesterday.

after the horrible paint job ....caused by too much heat and humidity (the paint was drying so fast i couldnt tip it in time) ....
i needed to wet sand the cap....after all the time i spent making the cap as smooth as a baby....the paint ruined the work....so it was 320 grit.....first i knocked it down dry with a sander.....and when it was close....i went wet.

kalandcappaint042.jpg

my arms are sore from sanding....lol

kalandcappaint043.jpg

it is really important during wet sanding in high heat , that you clean the area that you are sanding often....just wipe the area down with fresh water and wipe up the water and residue....then add more water and continue sanding.

if you dont.....the water evaporates....the toothpaste like residue drys on to the part you just sanded and it doesnt come off unless you wet sand again....so constant cleaning is a must.

in this pic....you can see the residue.

kalandcappaint044.jpg

after the 2 marathon wet sanding sessions......the sheen started to come back...

kalandcappaint045.jpg

again....with my face inches from the surface....i went over every speck on the cap....i didnt want to miss a single spot.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

the roll and tip method of painting is exactally that.....you roll on the paint with a roller......then...using a fine brush you just use the tip of the brush on the paint....dont mash the brush into the substraight...just touch the wet paint and smooth out all the bubbles left by the roller....

sorry i didnt get pics of the process.....but i was kinda busy....lol

i just used a marine enamal paint.....this time i thinned it with 7% mineral spirits....and it added another 5 mins to the working time.....i started painting at 245 am....i needed it to be the coolest part of the night....the temp in the room was still around 80 degrees.

kalandcappaint049.jpg

you can still see some brush marks.....but 100 % better than the last attempt.

kalandcappaint050.jpg

the boat and the cap will have other color accents....but the overall base color is white...

ill see tommorow how good or bad it came out...(and how many bugs are in it...lol.....but im going to take the thinning up to a full 10 % and try to just do three coats.

kalandcappaint051.jpg

its so shiny that it is reflecting on the wood behind it....lol

kalandcappaint052.jpg

ok....you are up to date.....

im going to sleep now.....ill have more tommorow......

cheers
