Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I am looking forward to it!

So I am a little bit of a dunce when it comes to inboards.....Do you need to find a bigger flywheel or a different coupler? I am guessing the flywheel. Can I get you one from SLC over the next couple of days and bring it up or do you think that you can find one close to home?

HAHA, getting towed in with a kayak!!! I wish there was some pics of that one:D Advertise it as the "Eco-Bilgeliner":p I am glad that the problem the other night was just flooding, drifting around the big lake is not fun! I had my "brain box" go last year on the big lake and it was no fun getting back to the launch on 1 sometimes 2 cylinders in a good chop!

Let me know if I can help ya out and of course I will bring the sodas;)

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hey OOPs ,how thick is that transom ?
You are going to put a mercruiser i/o in that hull ?

Maxium thickness for Mercruiser is 2 1/4 " for the shaft from outdrive to engine coupler . Actually specs are 2" - 2 1/4 ".

You could recess it inside to that thickness just around the inner transon plate.

PER MERCRUISER MANUAL BELOW

IMPORTANT: Transom thickness and surface plane (flatness) must be controlled
where the sterndrive unit mounts.
Transom Specifications
Thickness Between 2 - 2-1/4 in. (51 - 57 mm) for 8 in. (203 mm) to either
side of the vertical centerline
Parallelism Inner and outer surfaces must be parallel within 1/8 in. (3 mm)
Flatness Transom surfaces in area where transom assembly will be
mounted (includes vertical as well as horizontal dimensions):
Inner Surface ? Flat within1/8 in. (3 mm)
Outer Surface ? Flat within1/16 in. (2 mm)
Angle 10 -16 Degrees

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

thanks appoloosa for the info.

yep mercrusier is goin in.

im currently working on the flatness of the transom........it was 3 1/2 ins thick !

(long story)......i took a router to it have a ressesment and am now grinding for flatness.

the paralellism is good to 3mm s with in 2 ins of the cut out, the flatness is good on the out side. (that was faired with a long board) but on the inside where i routerd it .....the flatness is needing work.....but just a few more hours in the morning and it will be done.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Sorry we ran out of time for a visit. That work stuff sucks!! Anyways Marvyn still has my coupler and will leave it with him in case you need it. Was ready to give you a tow but luckily it started. Those would have been awesome pix. Hopefully your problem is resolved. Will be back later.

Have a great day

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

sorry if i ask a question that was buried in the post but how thinck was the bottom of your hull when you stared and about how thick its it now.

reason i ask is i got alot of the foam out of my boat and I was pressing on the hull and it was flexing like crazy...i feel like when i cut out my stringers and if im not carefull and accidently stand on the hull my foot will go through it!

the hull was fairly solid under 1/5 inch thick....but its now over double that.

as far as your hull.....a lot of hulls use the foam for structural support.
you have the choice to replace the foam or not....if you decide that you dont want to replace it, then the hull must be reinforced. one or two layers of 1708 bi ax will do that nicely.......that will give you stiffness as well as stregnth.

however ....if you do add more glass......dont get carried away like i did.....you can add a whole lot of weight to the boat in a hurry

getting over all shots are really difficult due to the immence legnth of the boat......you have to stand a really long way to get the whole thing in the lens of the camera.....

but here are some that we took when we were fitting a tower on the boat.....we put the windsheild back on for theses shots.

im hoping that in a short while i can roll it out of the shop for a bit.

we tryed a center location....as that is where the wing mock up looked best.
it doesnt look good with a tower in this position

The wakeboard tower looks good up by the windshield. If it is still able to be modified, I think that when the front leg angle matches the windshield pillar angle that it keeps the lines of the boat somewhat cleaner. Still it is looking awesome.

My current goal is to beat you to the water. LOL

What, you only go for the beer? You should be ashamed of yourself.

:D

I've been sitting here staring at this message for a half hour now, and I don't get it. Why should I be ashamed of myself.

I must be missing something.

loving the project and the boat, i like the tower up front as long as passengers aft arent getting free haircuts from the tow rope.

Well, that is the beauty of the tower...gets the rope up high. I think it looks good as part of the windshield lines, I don't think it would look good anywhere else unless it was installed as a reverse tower from the back?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

im getting fairly busy with things....i got a 26 sundancer to polish and a wake tower to install..on a larson ...but im off to the shop to finish on the flatness of the transom inside......then do some fairing on the hull cap and the dash.....then install a fuel pump on the bilgeliner....then maybe a late night cruise on the big lake with my girl.

the tower looks good up front we tryed several locations with that one.....it just looked like carp any where else.

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Oops

I have never used, been on, or even seen a boat in action with a tower, but I have to ask. Is there any concern with having the tower too far forward? Would a skier be able to pull the forward end of the boat to one side when carving? Probably not but I just thought I would ask.

By the way, it sounds like things are going well with your new business venture. I wish you the best of luck.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

OK I just found this tread today around 1:00AM and I just couldn't stop reading it now its 5:58AM, and finally got to the end. I most say this is one of the most educational readings I have ever come across regarding fiberglass, molding, etc. The boat really looks fantastic.
I was thinking you should consider writing a book with all of the material you have posted in here.

I will continue reading on your progress.

Congratulation

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Ooops -2 questions:
1. Why is it taking so long for your shift cables to come in? Is there anywhere else you can get them? Is there something special about them?

2. As for the flywheel.. can you maybe research what kind of car would have a 350 chevy with the flywheel you need and then look ebay or local junkyards for that car?

The tower looks great Oops:D

I don't think you will have problems with the ski rope clearance:)
