Re: hull extension in progress with picks

how are you doing all that fiberglass work without a venilator? Aren't your hands itching like crazy with no gloves?

Are you kidding? Oops has handled so much fiberglass that his hands are impervious to something as small as a fiber of glass! Heck, the glass breaks just from impact from his skin, it is so tough from a year of punishing his flesh against it... Even Chuck Norris would have a hard time making Oops itch at this point :D

Here is the main question:
Does Mrs. Oops like it?

I love the long bench seating, that's going to be a fun party boat!!

actually she hasnt spent much time at the shop, or in the build process......she hates the glass smell.

but when she saw the benches on the floor of the shop she couldnt imagine how they went, so i assembled them for her, and told her the paint and uphostery, schemes and she got really really excited,

she was soo happy laying back on that bench reminiscing of the old jump seats that were there and the B2B loungers that were only comfortable to sit on one way, now there is an actual relaxation place on the boat!

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

i didnt bring my camera to the shop last night, i wish i would have.

i had been having a delema the past few days over fairing the extension section of the top cap............it had a really ugly "wow".....on one side, it stuck out over one inch over a one foot section. (where the rub rail attaches)

last night while i was sanding the cap for paint prep........i decided that it would bug me, so i ground the wow totally out, now i have to re glass a section of the cap!.

its in a tough spot, ill take pics of it today, it is on the flange of the cap, i took out about a good 7 inches of it!

earlier in the day i hap pm'd ondarvr just to say hi....

so i was at the boat working, getting ready to glass the ground out peice back in.......and who walkes in the shop?......ondarvr couldnt see the huge grin on my face cause of the resporator......but it was sure good to see him.

he set me straight on getting it done once.........(i was thinking of waiting till next year and fixing the top cap section.....but i decided to just do it right.
(yes....don's sig had somthing to do with it!)
so it will take a little while longer than i thought but it wont be all summer!.

all the parts for the motor are there....(except the manifolds :() but the boat is just about ready to start on the next phase......

since noklu is gonna be in town today....(about now) i gotta get back to the shop and finish the fairing, or he will drink all my beer !,,,,,lol

Seeing all that pink foam brings back memories..... So is the foam dust sticking to all the tools and stuff? LOL! Darned static!

BTW, it may be a little late, but when I was shaping foam, I glued some 80 grit sand paper to a piece of MDF about 3x12" and it was a great tool for shaping, leveling and rounding corners. Much easier than pearing down a piece with razor knife. One piece lasted the whole top! Foam sure sands easy.

Those dash pods look great. Is the foam going to be left in the piece or removed?

Man, you got enough space to play shuffle board in that boat!

Great job on the seating, and dash. This is gonna be a fun boat! Tons of room...

How many folks do you think she can hold?

Did you sell the 4.3 ?

Cheers!

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hello oops,
I noticed on one of your post you said you put some pieces in the sun to reduce cure time and it resulted in air bubbles. If the bubbles were not there before you laid them out to cure then they are blisters (fiberglass cracking and delaminating from excess heat, especially where there is overlap). Like you said on non structural parts, not a big deal.
When it is really cold outside do you use styrene to thin the resin?
I have never dealt with marine resin but could you tell me if you buy it already promoted.
My dad owned a shop that dealt with industrial fiberglass for 27 years. I helped him off and on since I was a kid. In my opinion fiberglass does not itch at all, it hurts. It?s literally a bunch of tiny shards stabbed into you.
I just started reading your thread but I went ahead and jumped to the end to see where you were at. I?m going to read the whole thing (a months worth of solid reading it looks like). So far I really like what you are doing. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

thanks ivaz.

yes the resin is allready promoted. boat resin is just cheap grade resin.....a lot of people call it decking resin.

as far as the bubbles in the glass.....they were micro bubbles.....(small bubbles uasually caused by a bad wet out) and in the heat of the sun.......they expanded.

this thread is getting quite long.....but i think its really worth the read.

theu the thread there is several discussions on every subject form glassing to epoxy to motor hp ratios to computer assisted systems !.

all thru the thread you will get to know the posters.....most of who are long term people on this site......so you really get the family concept of theiu site.

cheers
