Re: hull extension in progress with picks

this particular segment is really intresting because of the sharp 90 degree corners that needed to be glassed over.....there is a way to do it with out air!

I notice you have mat there....maybe cloth will bring you joy on those 90s

HEH HEH HEH.........

got a bit side tracked........

interior2session4018.jpg

take a close look at this sign......

interior2session4046.jpg
...

the blazers are not too good this year....but in the past the kamloops blazers were the pride of canada....we swept them.

the tricity americans.......ranked 6th overall in canada.....we took em in 6
the vancouver giants....ranked 3rd in canada....we beat them in 5 or 6
the calgary hitmen......ranked number one in canada.....shut down in 6.

interior2session4044.jpg

that # 22 is michael backland.....he will be a calgary flame next year.

interior2session4027.jpg

$ 14 is jamie benn.......a future nhl superstar......missed 20 some odd games this year because of the world juniors.....and was just a few points off the league scoring title......he won a game mvp and gold at the world juniors.

the next step is the memorial cup.....it is in sidney crosbys town.....roumoiski.
starts friday........GO ROCKETS GO !

(the game was televised and she watched it from her hospital bed)
cant wait till ya get back bud.

hi coastal......

cloth is really bad on 90 deg corners.....espically if over a distance...
if the corner is not perfectally straight and the cloth is not lined up exactally with the weave of the cloth.....you will get air...
but there is a way!!!!

ok......

i gotta speed up the updates cause its getting down to the nitty gritty and the posts are far behind.

if im not at the hospital or hockey games im at the boat

the arm consoles were a challenge glassing.....i needed stregnth but i also needed stiffness.....

the only way to do it was to lay a strip of csm an each flat part with out bending the matt over the corner

interior2session3056.jpg

then when it was still wet....i added a 1708 layer over each flat part.

i let that start to kick.....and when it was still sticky......i started ripping matt!.

interior2session3049.jpg

the idea is to break down the binder that holds the glass togeather.....the individual strands of glass will make the corner.

interior2session3038.jpg

when you rip the glass, you can feel the binder break down .....this matt is 1.5 oz.

interior2session3039.jpg

that was laid out and glassed

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

several layer of that later and i have a really strong arm console...

interior2session3053.jpg

at the same time i was doing that.....i was also starting to fab the dashboard.

this was the scaryest part for me cause im not a sculpter or artist....so i was really worried about how this would come out!

i again used foam to make the basic shape

interior2session2114-1.jpg

i wanted a glove box and a dash.....just a little more modren than the traditional sharp angled lines of the old searay.

interior2session2115-1.jpg

the foam was cut with a utility knife and shapped to fit over the current dash

interior2session2119-1.jpg

the cool thing about the foam is that it sands really easily.......it was easy to shape

interior2session2122-1.jpg

after only a few minits, the basic shape started to evolve.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

after a little more time.....

interior2session2120-1.jpg

some sanding...

interior2session2127-1.jpg

and some more sanding

interior2session2126-1.jpg

it wasnt looking quite right......so with some foam glue and tooth pics i added more foam and sanded some more

interior2session3022.jpg

it started to take shape

interior2session3023.jpg

ok.......its getting late....ill post more tommorow and try to get you all caught up to speed......

cheers

Cool, and a lot of work sculpting.

I think you need a vacuum pump to "clamp" some of those curves... makes things much easier.

AHHH very cool.

check out my shower post, there is a 90 I needed to cover but its just a small area. What I did is softened the corner previously with the sander. and ya that cloth can be a Pia.
I will keep your idea in the vault.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

on cooler days.....the resin doesnt go very far.....so here is a neat little trick that worked like a charm.

the sun was warm but the outside temp was still a bit chilly

interior2session2103.jpg

i used the same idea when trying to make things cure a little faster

interior2session3044.jpg

the hot sun cut full cure times way down.....but i did get more air bubbles in the resin......these are not structural pieces so i wasn't too worried.

the dash needed to be fiberglassed.....but the problem was that the resin eats the foam to nothing in seconds......so the foam shapes were wrapped in packing tape to protect the foam from the resin...

interior2session3034.jpg

..then they were glassed.

interior2session3041.jpg

using the same ripped mat process.....the shaper curves of the dash were made

interior2session3040.jpg

then the parts were put outside to cure

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

mrs oops droppes by on a rare visit to the boat to cheer me on .....so we got a little side tracked with some soda pops.....

she couldnt picture the boat with waht it would look like....

so i stopped what i was doing and installed the interior as a mock so she could see.

i started by trimming the excess off the side consoles

interior2session3075.jpg

using a rotary saw.....i also trimmed up the benches

interior2session3074.jpg

as you can see this didnt take long.....but the soda pops were great

interior2session3072.jpg

here is my helper after a "few".......i really like the fact that the benches are really strong...but weigh very little.

interior2session3071.jpg

as you can see the boat is still a mess inside!

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

it just took a few short minits to trim the excess fiberglass

interior2session3083.jpg

the benches were fit togeather

interior2session3086.jpg

you can see an overlap here......that is also for ease of removal.

you can really get a idea of the massive amount of legnth and space in the boat from this pic......i was standing on the bow.....it was the only way i could get the boat in the shot! bear in mind....you can just see the end of the arm rests they are 5 feet long.....so add another 5 feet forward and you are just at the dash!

interior2session3088.jpg

ahaaa yes.....nuthing like relaxing after a tough day in the shop.

interior2session3080.jpg

i needed that beer!

interior2session3082.jpg

more to come soon.....

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

The puzzle pieces are starting to come together! The pink foam is a great idea for shaping the dash. I want to build a custom dash for my boat also, I think I may just end up going that route also.

Are you still planning on going with the touch screen controls?

The sheer length of that boat is impressive. I can just imagine what limousine builders go through!

there just isnt room for them mike....i sat for hours amd tryed to figgure a way.....and there just isnt room.

i dont even know where im going to put the fish finder screen!

the foam is really easy to do as youll see in later pics.

im currently fairing them intp the existing dash.....they look like they were allways there

how are you doing all that fiberglass work without a venilator? Aren't your hands itching like crazy with no gloves?
