Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hi Oops! Been catching up on the thread. Sure hope you find that camera!

This coming weekend the hard top comes off the boat and goes into the garage for fairing. Maybe you could send some of your guys down to give me a hand sanding? Bet we would be done in a day! :D

Best of luck with the sea trials.

BTW, did you make a decision on where to mount the overhead structure? Fore or aft or center?

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Yep it was painful watching the Giants. Did not watch the whole game just the last bit, they were awful. The team that wanted it more won, and they deserved it. Lets see some pix!!

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Hockey nutz sounds painful... is that anything like monkey butt?

I'm almost to the point of shipping you a new camera and cable just so we can see some more pics :)

I'm guilty too, lots going on here, getting my new project stored for next winter and doing a dozen other projects, so I haven't updated (or in fact done much work) on my build.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Erik

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok all.....time for a quick update ...i gotta get back to the shop...

after the benches were gellcoated it came time to glass them.....

the gellcoat had just hardened when the first layer of csm went on it......

as in all fresh glassing.....the csm goes first..........this is 1.5 oz matt

interior2session2097.jpg

special attention went to the bendds and the riser of the seat.

interior2session2099.jpg

the seats will be screwed into the boat.....thus supporting the backs.....and the shape will support the weight of the person.....but again, the corners needed special attention

interior2session2098.jpg

with the csm down ...... the radius of the turn was easily handled by the csm......a double layer of 1708 went on each corner.....just for good measure.

interior2session2096.jpg

another layer also went on the riser.

interior2session2104.jpg

ok.....i gotta get back to the shop.....

(im really getting stoked on the progress.....:D)
another mile stone was reached last night.

cheers

Hey Oops!

Those benches are looking good! I can't believe how close you are to getting this baby done and in the water! I can't wait! If I am in town, I will be your chase boat on the trials for sure. (Rescue boat will not be required I am sure:p)

Everyone:
I had a blast finally getting to meet the infamous Oops (he really is like a kid in a candy store in the shop!). The boat is HUGE! The pics do not do her justice and when I was sitting on the extension part it was easy to understand the magnitude of this project! It was waaaaay cool and I am so lucky to be able to see her in person:D I was running my hand over the hull and it is so smooth. Oops spent soooo much time fairing and it sure shows!

Oops:
I spent a bit too much time at the shop having Cervezas with ya and by the time I looked at the truck I missed my other appointment at home:eek:...haha the price ya gotta pay to play! I bought the truck though and made up the appt' today....pregnant wife not overly impressed but nothing a nice dinner won't fix:D

Anyway, keep it up bud! I will drop by next week and distract you again for a couple of hours!

Cheers,
Yar.

You need to get into the habit of copying your entire post before you hit send. This way should the server or connection time out, all you have to do is come back and click paste. Problem averted. :p

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok....ill try this again......

during the time i was making the benches.....i was also building the swim platform. the whole idea was to be able to gellcoat the benches and the platform at the same time.

normally.....when a fiberglass part is made.....its a three step process.

first a sculpture is made, uasually made of wood this sculpture is exactally what the part looks like......this is called a plug. after the plug is carved.....it is painted and waxed

the plug is then fiberglassed using tooling resin. the fiberglassed area is uasually reinforced from the outside so the shell of fiberglass has some rigidity to it.

after the giberglassed plug cures.....i8t glass is removed form the plug......the galssed peice is called the mold......the mold is then faired and waxed as smooth as possible.

after waxing......the mold is gellcoated, then after its cured its fiberglassed using a chopper gun or traditional methods of lay ups.

well when ol oops did his.....he wanted to skip a few steps...!
would have worked too if murphy hadent shown up!

one of the things i wanted to do was work with foam.......i will be using it in later stages of this project, so i wanted to get used to it!
i chose rigid insulating foam as the medium instread of wood for the mold.,

no klu and i hunted construction sites in the area for these peices.

interior2session2043.jpg

the next was to prep the surface of the mold.....i used contact cement to apply the arbourite to the osb.

interior2session2041.jpg

the arbourite chosen was not a smooth surface but a slightly pebbeled one that would give some kind of non slip surface.

using the contact cement it was applied to the board.

interior2session2040.jpg

interior2session2045.jpg

the most crutial thing in building a swim grid is to make surte that the angle of the platform is level to the water line.....that means you must come off the transom at the correct angle.........i eyebelled it!

interior2session2046.jpg

the foam is to make up the side walls of the form.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

as you can see the basic shape was drawn on to the arbourite.

i also wanted a rounded edge on the platform

using a grinding stone on a drill i just etched the edge of the foam.

interior2session2047.jpg

it was a quite simple procedure

interior2session2048.jpg

consistancy was the key.....but after a little practice it went smooth.

interior2session2048.jpg

next the face of the beveled area had to be sanded so that the new curve was consistant.

interior2session2051.jpg

this foam is a dream to sand.

interior2session2052.jpg

in no time.....it was done.

the radiuses of the trailing edge needed a curve to follow.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

these two rotors come in really handy for all kinds of stuff!

interior2session2058.jpg

the corners were also angled outward so it was a nice corner off the trailing edge

interior2session2056.jpg

after the basic side shape was made.....using tuck tape.....the form was taped to the arbourite

interior2session2060.jpg

this tuck tape is really strong......at least 3 times stronger than duct tape. it also has a really waxy surface to it ....so it is a natural mold release.

interior2session2061.jpg

the trick to this is.....no wrinkles in the tape....none......it took some time.....but it came out good!
the tape was also inlaid around the edge of the platform that would give me a pebbled surface than a smooth surface at the edge

interior2session2062.jpg

next update......gellcoating!

cheers
