hey tackelwasher.....im a waitin on a tinny transom some day !!!!!

With the weather like this, I'm too busy fishing (note I say "fishing" and not "catching")

Gonna try Wood lake this weekend (brother is up for a visit) to see if the Kokanee have woken up yet.

Not quite sure where oops! has gotten too. I saw his truck at his shop a day or so ago so I know he's around. Must be working on other peoples boats.

Maybe I should drop by and be sure he's not been crushed by corona bottles.......

Hey Oops

I was wondering if you came up with a design for your wake tower yet?

I came across this link on a fishing site and it made me think of your thread.

http://www.nwcustomboatworks.com/caddrawings.html

I like the concept of the plasticoat "gripable" coating.

They're up around your neck of the woods...well Oregon.

Anyway good luck with completion!

I look forward to seeing finished product

Cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

We popped the swim grid out of the mold the other day and it wasn't pretty. His first attempt at making a mold was not the best. The shape is good but the finish is going to need a lot of work. The gun we used to spray the gelcoat broke down in the middle of the job and that screwed things up as well.
On the bright side he's learning what not to use when making molds so he has to decide if he's going to scrap the first attempt or spend a lot of time fixing it.
The bench seats need a few more layers of glass before they are finished. After seeing the swim grids finish there is some concern over the results of the seats but as only part of the seats will be exposed after the cushions are added they won't be that bad to repair.
By the time he gets a new camera cord it'll take him a week to load all the pics.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok.....here we go.......

this was a while ago, just after robj and tackel came to the shop.

the idea was to use arbourite for the mold........the bench seats were formed out of osb...

this is the aft bench

interior2session2020.jpg

..then the smooth arbourite was brought in.

interior2session2019.jpg

several attempts were made to bend the arbourite into the shape of the benches.....however the material was too thick and the temperature was too cold.....it just broke.....and broke and broke!....

interior2session2023.jpg

...the smooth rounded corners of the arbourite was what i was trying to acheive....we hven tryed to ues a heat gun on the material however to no avail.....

so it was decided to start to lay the arbourite in strips and worry about the corners with other material.

the material was glued on to the osb using contact cement.

interior2session2021.jpg

peice by peice the benches were covered

interior2session2022.jpg

it is important to get the arbourite smooth.....even with the contact cement....you can still get a wavy sufrace......so you need to smoothe it down some how.

using a hammer and a 2x4 as a puunding surface i smothed all the waves out of the surface.

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

finally the benches were covered...

interior2session2030.jpg

the white arbourite is a different finish.....a more pebbely surface for gripping the seat base.

interior2session2032.jpg

unfourtunately, because we could not get the arbourite to cooperate with the corners....we needed a way to round out the corners so the bench would have a smooth flowing line and the fiberglass layers would have an easyer time going around them.

no klu came up with this idea

interior2session2026.jpg

drywall corners......nice and round.....with just a little persuasion they went nicely in the seats.

interior2session2027.jpg

the corners were tapped down with a thin tape called tuck tape.....it is a really strong construction tape that sticks to everything and has a really waxy surface....a natural mold release.......it is also very thin.....i had used it before in the build with great sucess.....

interior2session2034.jpg

each bench was prepped

that motor instlation was a boat we did at the shop.......thats a 383 stroker with a volvo puo prop drive.....i have a full set of pictures on that project that i will be posting soon.

the arbourite is a type of skin that gellcoat likes to adhere to when curing......gelcoat wants to cure next to a hard surface........

i have quite a few more updates on that part of the project that i will be adding right away......i want to add one set a day till in caught up with the posting.....

so more on the arbourite on the way!

cheers

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

Too bad that wasn't oops! engine going in!!! The guy oops! has the shop with installed a NEW 383 STROKER in a customers boat. After several agonizing and failed discussions as to how we could relieve this guy of his motor and get it in oops! boat, and not do any hard time, we helped install it. oops! had a tear in his eye watching that new stroker and a volvo drive going into the wrong boat!!! On the bright side it got oops! seriously thinking about the engine out of the old delivery van getting cleaned up and installed in his boat. It's a strong [300 hp] rebuilt corvette 350 with a cam and the engine builder says it would be a perfect engine for the boat. If we could find him some cheap [free] manifolds and a proper distributor for the same price, the rest of the parts needed could come off his V6. Or at least we think they should fit.
