Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

i dont know if you gave anythought to this but i have the same exact floor layout with minimal access to the bilge area except through 4 small tiny holes in two hatches that are marine texed in. When i redo my boat i plan on putting more access hatches around the boat to give me access to more places in the bilge. just a thought.

Snake, year i hear ya, however im kinda weird when it comes to that stuff, although its a fishing boat i truly hate all the hatches, access holes and floor access hatches in the floor. I like a nice smooth look on a boat, your right about bad access, however i plan on having a completely dry hull = zero water penetration ;-) i did it on my last project and i think i can pull if off here, but you are totally right more access to the bilge would be beneficial for most boaters.

Sounds great, i know what you mean. just hate to be 30 miles out and no way to get to the bilge pump... or electronics running under the floor. I cant wait to see u finished. if your ever in FL give me a holler we'll go to the stream or bimini

On your shut off valves, I would think pvc ball valves would be fine. I've had them on raw water wash down lines before.
About your oil tanks... can you see both tanks? I'd be concerned that one tank could get filled more than the other. I'd hate to hear that one of your engines blew up.

GO OVERIT

I have attached a drawing of what i am using the Y fitting for, however i dont see any issue with one tank being filled more than the other? these motors have oil gauges on them which will tell me if 1 engine is low on oil or not. The drawing attached shows how i see my little system working.

The goal here is to only have 1 deck fitting for the oil tanks, like i said earlier i dont want to put a bunch of access hatches and fittings into the boat, i think it looks much smoother without. So with that being said i will have one deck fitting which will take the oil and the Y valve will split the oil and equally fill each tank (see opt 1 in the photo). Now if i cant find a y fitting then i will use a T fitting (which are easy to find) and do option two. In either case once the oil gets to the fitting as long as you fill the oil tanks up to the brim, you will get equal oil amounts in both tanks. seeing that i will always fill up my oil tanks completely i will never run into an issue of one being lower than the other. AND IF in fact something CrAzY happened( which we all have seen before!) and im out WAY OUT and oil gets low on one engine two things will happen, 1 i will shut that motor down, and 2 i would limp home on the second motor. Either way if im going for a long trip you bet im filling everything up and i find it hard to believe i would go through the 3 gallons of oil per engine on one run.

SO where can i find this fitting?!?!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

OK well, I still haven?t gotten an answer on where to find my Y vales!!!!!

Anddd now I have some more questions that I am hoping all of you will take the time to explain to me!
COME ON DON?T GIVE UP ON ME NOW WERE ALMOST THERE!

Ok?.so first question is in regards to my engine system. I have twin outboard, and I am planning on putting two batteries in the boat, now I have ?heard that each motor is its own system, meaning each motor has its own gauges, oil tank, and its own battery (which makes since), however lets say my one battery was dead thus not able to start that engine, now if these two motors are on two different batteries that would mean if I started my other motor it would not charge my other battery as well?..to me this sounds silly and there must be some way to tie these two systems together so that when running one engine it will charge both batteries, I need someone who has delt with this, cuz obviously if done wrong you can fry your motors brain.

Second question, I am getting ready to buy my vynle covering for my upholstery. I went to Joann Fabrics and they have a marine grade vynle. However, I have used this marine grade vynle before on other projects and man it sucks! It stains easily and is just ok on its abrasion resistance. Since the area I am redoing is the pad around the entire inside of the boat, I figured I would need something tuff and very stain resistant. Now we ALL KNOW the sky is the limit for products so if your going to suggest something please let it be something you have worked with, bought or have friends that have used it. Cuz we can all go to the most expensive sites and say ?oh yeah that?s good stuff? im looking to educate others and myself on Vynle products for the boat.

DON?T LET ME DOWN BOYS!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

1) you need a battery switch to do what you want. Look in iboats marine store for battery switches. Do a search on the forum for dual battery connections. There are lots of posts about how to do it using a battery switch.

2) there is marine vinyl, and then there is marine vinyl. Get on yahoo and do a search on marine vinyl and find something that matches your budget.

DONT LET US DOWN NOW, GET OUT THERE AND FIND THOSE PARTS YOU NEED!!!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

I have a question regarding your oil tanks.

you said each is a seperate system.. the question is why?? why not have both engines running off of one tank..

if you then had a level transmitter for the oil tank and a pressure gauges on each engine that should cover you..

unless each engine operates as a dry sump.. (sorry but I know bupkiss about outboards) and I am assuming they are 4 stroke engines not 2 stroke.. if they are 2 strokes.. then 1 large oil tank would be fine.. and if you can read the level and each engines oil pressure at the console , they you'll know exactly how much oil is in the tank, and what pressure each engine is running.. then if murphy shows up.. you can diagnose quickly.

2nd as far as battery's.. put an isolator between them. then you can use each system independently.. then if one dies, turn the isolator switch and the other battery... plus you can use one motor to charge both batteries if one engine's alternator dies.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

i have a 2 outboard boat and my tanks are filled seperatly and they burn seperatly also. my right engine burns a tad more then the left most of the time. sometimes its vice versa. there is no burning the same amount on both because its almost impossible to run both under the same conditions. i suggest if your going the route that you are to use one large tank, but that T idea will fill the first tank first and the second tank might not get any oil at all and it will probably over flow the first tank. i just see it being a bad idea. make it so you can open a hatch either on the floor, under the console, in the transom, or in the gunwhales so you can physically see and fill your oil tanks. the battery thing you need a switch like said before, i have to swtiches as i have 4 batteris and only 2 starting batteries. so each bank can be run indepent of the other or all at once or just the starting batteries etc. I dont know if you have been 30 + miles out but you want to be able to access all essential components.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

From what I have read or been able to find out.

ditch the y fitting idea, either go with 1 big tank or 2 tanks with seperate fill ports.

the reason being, you are going to be unable to check the oil in the tanks.
With 1 big tank, you can easily check the level.. with 2 tanks with 2 fill ports you can check each engines oil consumption indepentantly.

personally, i would like to know which engine is consuming the most oil..
(unless thy are 2 strokes, then use 1 big tank..)

however if your bent on a Y fitting.. check at home depot.. in the sprinkler Isle.. some of those plastic fittings might work...

one thing for sure.. i would avoid the T fittings completely..

plastic sprinkler fitting on a 30' offshore fish slayer??

beware the chinese stuff

i wouldn't skimp on every corner. do it the right way, there's probably a reason it's called that. redundancy is also a good thing out there.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

i totally agree with ditching the y fitting and AVOID THE T FITTING. in regards to props no one is going to be able to give you a deifnite answer as all boats motors behave differently. i would suggest you talk to someone with as close to a setup as yours and see what kind of performce they have. then adjust to give you more speed of hole shot. go on yahoo and search for marine grade vinyal, most of those will work. I would also suggest you search the forums for vinyl that has been used before on other projects.
