I worked on that thing EVERYDAY for 8 weeks to get her back together before the winter. now that shes in the garage i have plenty of time to finish her before April 27th (launch date). I will be back at it with photos and progress come the end of the month, right now im just tryin to take it easy and enjoy the holidays. I see you have been moving along! Keep up the good work man, next summer when you get her in the water you and i should venture a long trip and take the boats out and meet half way! Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

If you look at the photo below you can see that there are little scratches in the red stripe on the hull of the boat. You can?t tell in the photo, but these do not appear to go all the way down to the fiberglass and look to be just?scuffs?. I need your help on explaining to me the process of ?wet sanding? to bring this area back to restoration. I need someone to give me a detailed explanation of the process on how to buff this red stripe back to original. Keep in mind this is the first time im doing this and if you have learned any pointers or words of caution for me it would be greatly appreciated.

I would assume I use like a 1200 grit and a spay bottle of water with a rubber sanding block (not an orbital sander) but im not sure? Im just taking a guess here. Can someone please help this old project?

your pretty much dead on.. use wet sand paper. start at 800 grit and go progressivily finer. use water.. plenty of it. you will want the paper wet and the bottle of water (I have alwasy used a hose turned onto a dribble)to wash the sanding particles away so they dont grind into the finish your trying to smooth out.

while I have never done fiberglass, I have done MC's and jeeps.

How deep are these scuff's??? can they be buffed out instead of sanded?
are they into the gel coat or just the clear coat? have you tried a commercial scratch remover/refinisher?

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Helloooooo alll fellow I BoAtErS! I am backkkkk at it! and once again am in need of your help. To give you all a break down of what has been happening and what is going to be happening I want to take sometime to explain where I have been the last 6 weeks.
I took the month of December off to regroup my head and get ready to finish this baby. My plan is to have the boat in the water mid to late march and have all the kinks worked out by April 27th (that?s the official launch date, and my Birthday). Everything went quite well for the restoration of the boat this far, except one area in the floor. I did a crappy glassing job and right in front of the cuddy is a 2?X2? square piece of floor that is soft and has pretty much delaminated from the surface layer. SO we all know that taking the hull apart and flipping it over and reglassing the 2X2 section of floor is OUT OF THE QUESTION, so my question goes to all of you?..How do I fix this? The nice thing is this area is all sectioned off to itself and the area is confined to a definite area it is very easily accessible through the live well hole in the floor. I just have no clue how to install a new layer of ? ply and glass it all all the while doing it with the hull right side up!!....gravity is working against me. But I know this has been done before, I just need you know how to explain to me how to fiberglass a section of floor without the boat being flipped to have gravity work in your favor. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated guys!!!!

I thought you put new flooring in.... Apparently there is not enough support underneath that part of the sole.
Do it like you would repair drywall damage.
Bevel cut the floor area you need repaired.
Lay in some back up pieces. Use the plastic trim 3/8"x4" the have at Lowe's. Screw those in underneath your good flooring. make a template from cardboard if don't have a perfect fit. Fill the gap with PB, sand, lay-in new glass. fair it in.
Or cut it out and lay in a storage compartment with a hatch. Hatch with flush hardware.

I don't understand.... You say "the hull right side up", but gravity is working against you. I'm confused. Do you mean the hull is upside down, or right side up?

Maybe some pictures will help.

I did a crappy glassing job and right in front of the cuddy is a 2?X2? square piece of floor that is soft and has pretty much delaminated from the surface layer.

if it just de lamed.....grind it off and re glass it.........if you glassed over rotten wood.....then the wood must come out or it will infect your boat and all your work will be for nothing.

glassing up side down is easy....dont use a heavy cloth......use a wet out table and saturate the glass.......wet out the area......then apply the glass....then use multliple layers.

if you need to replace the wood nova has the answer

I think he means that the hull is right side up and he needs to fix the deck from the underside.

GoOVER IT you are exactly right!

As for the budget, 3000 in materials
8000 in twin 2003 Evinrude 250's (salt water babys and one currently is in the shop for overheating issues)
I project 2000 for paint
And another 2000 for mics cushions, trailer, and hardware

Total by April 15,000.00

P.S im here in Detroit and iv found several trailers for 15 to 1700 bucks, our economey is dieing over here!

I wanna make a reference to Dumb and Dumber; here Loyd looks at the briefcase and sees the name "samsonite", assumeing that?s Marys last name; only to find out that later Mary's last name was "Swanson" and responds by admitting "MAN I WAS WAY OFF!" haha thats how I feel about my estimate.....howeverrrrrrr in my only defense when i projected that estimate i was unaware of the transom being shot. Then after doing all that work i decided i would just spend some money and get some decent engines. Well i spent the money, now i have to wait 4 months to see if they are decent. Check in later tonight, I have a few good photos to share with you all.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Time for a reality check.

You started out with an $8000 budget and thought you could finish the boat with it.

Many members give estimates much, much higher.

The cost to date is $15000, and it is not finished.

I think its time to re-evaluate how much time and money this boat is going to take to finish.

Your boat is a 1985 if I remember correctly, this Scarab Sport is a 1988 and listed as in "very good condition" for $17,000 ready to go.

Now if you sell off everything you have, hull, trailer, motors and can come up with $10,000. then for the $8000 you have allocated to paint, you can just go and buy a working boat.

Just something to think about.

But what fun would that be?
