Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Time for a reality check.

You started out with an $8000 budget and thought you could finish the boat with it.

Many members give estimates much, much higher.

The cost to date is $15000, and it is not finished.

I think its time to re-evaluate how much time and money this boat is going to take to finish.

Your boat is a 1985 if I remember correctly, this Scarab Sport is a 1988 and listed as in "very good condition" for $17,000 ready to go.

I did not mean to insult or anger you. I just see the project getting more and more expensive and you haven't added all the hardware you'll need to use it for fishing.

I guess what I'm saying is strictly financially speaking, it's not too late to change your mind and get a working boat for less than you'll spend to finish your's.

I know you have a lot of planning and labor involved, and it is a great project. The initial budget was $8000. It looks like it could be 3 times that by the time you are finished. I just wanted to be sure you saw all the alternatives in case you felt obligated to finish the boat even if you were getting in over your head.

I am truly surprised on some of these opinions. Almost everyone in here should know that these projects are 75% a mind game and 25% labor. To say to "re evaluate" is far more detrimental than constructive. Currently the project is at 12000 WITH motors, HULL FINISHED, and 85 percent of the hardware i have, I WIll be spending close to 2000 on paint. And the remaining is for a trailer and anything else i would like to add. So i have to disagree, my boat will be in perfect shape, and i saved 2000 dollars by fixing it myself and knowing the quality of the build, instead of just buying something new"er". My budget will cap around 15000.

Ooops, my bad. From what I read I thought you already spent 15,000, the motors were in the shop for repairs, and 8,000 more just to get painted.

If you come in close to the 15K, then I agree you are doing very well. I too would prefer a slightly more expenive complete rebuilt boat over an unknown boat.

Hey, if I didn't bring this whole thing up, your post count wouldn't be as high as it is today! :D

We need to get in touch. I'm doing an almost identical project boat, and don't think your budget (depending on what you plan) is unrealistic. Just plan on going over it and you'll be fine.

I'm sticking with my original $20,000 or higher estimate, mainly because once you start rigging the boat it can really nickel and dime you to death. Plus if one motor is in the shop for overheating there could be additional costs involved. $5,000 can be spent on a 20 footer in a very short period of time with little or no visible or performance gains, it just goes into making things work right and as the boat get's bigger much more money can fit into the hole.

Mark, i agree, no hard feelings here

Now, as for ondarvr, it'll be 15 MAYBE 16 thousand tops. I have one of the best johnson evinrude mechanics in the nation, and he just happens to be a good friend. I also have all the hardware: cleats, hod holders, exc.... however items such as a new little GPS, windscreen, and mics upolstry, will eat up my remaining thousand.

You've done a good job at finding great deals on what you've needed so far and I'm not criticizing what you're doing, seems like a decent project to me. I just think it's going to cost more to finish it, just good electronics for a boat that size can easily go past $5,000.

I'm curious about the gas tank. Did you get it repaired or get a replacement?

not sure what kind of toys you need for a lake boat but it sure ain't $5K worth like us guys on the coastlines. He'll be fine IMO on that one. Great job so far!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Hate to say it, but I told you so, you could not stick to your original budget. It was wayyyy tooo lowww. There is a saying, you get what you pay for. In the end it will end up costing you more than what you thought, but you will have a boat that should be as good as new.

Those boats that are advertised as "ready to go" etc, most of the time are a POS, and cannot be compared to what yours will be like when done. Especially true with an older boat. Been der done dat. My boat was advertised as needing new upholstery. Ended up with a complete rebuild, stringers, transom etc. Don't be discouraged if it ends up costing more than your estimate, try and keep costs low without cutting corners and you will be one happy boater in the end.

Keep up the good work,

Have a great day,

Rob.
