Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual
Hey everyone! I apologize for not getting photos and info to you sooner. The weather was crappy around here and I didn?t get outside to take some photos.
I am hoping that you all will take some time and read threw these questions I have and all give you inputs on how to attach these questions.
(see attached photos for more information)
Question #1, I noticed here where the two piece of the boat meet, that when I go to put the rub rail back on that these holes for the screws look pretty stripped out. My question is how do I fix these holes so they are nice and tight?
My opinion: I thought I had a great idea in just taking a strip of 1708 and putting it on the outside edge of the hull shell. This would seal the blown out holes and give the screws something to bite to. However I found this to be a problem because when you would go and put the interior shell on, the hull would be 3/16?? larger thus not fitting.
Your opinion?
Question #2 As said before the way I am redoing the stringers is a bit of an innovation. I am cutting one side of the stringer out, cleaning all the old wood out, then putting new wood in and then re glassing the side that was cut out. This is done to save on material and still keep a little of the factory glass. So my question is what should I use to adhere the new wood to the existing fiberglass? Epoxy is out, just too pricey so how should I do this?
My opinion: I thought I could coat the one side in resin and use a combination of that and ?peanut butter?, apply it to the wood and fiberglass and then clamp them together adhering them.

Question #3. I have to get a new gil bracket (which I hope you are all still looking for that Iboat deal!) With this said I have several holes in my transom. How do I fix these holes and give the exterior transom fiberglass good integrity even tough I will be drilling 24 new holes later down the road?
MY opinion: I was going to take some csm and apply it to the interior of the transom, then take and apply one layer of 1708(this is to just give the exterior layer some strength again. Then I plan on going to the exterior side of the transom and applying ?peanut butter to the holes and fill them in and sand smooth.
Your opinion?
Question #4 This is the second part to question #3. When I go and put a new gill bracket on it will be next spring. With this being said the transom work will all be completed and I am wondering on how to ensure that these threw bolts wont allow water to get in the transom and destroy all this work I have done!
My opinion: I was going to drill out the holes a little large and then fill them in with resin. Then when it came time to install the bracket I would drill the proper size holes in the ?resin holes? and this would keep any and all moisture away from the wood. Well the problem is funds are tight and I don?t have the bracket as of now to drill the proper holes, thus I cannot go that rout, so what?s the second best way?
Your Opinion?
LASTLY I am putting the wood in my transome this weekend and I still have to coat the wood in resin (to seal it). My question is, can i seal the wood with resin and add the construction addheasive and then clamp it all together at once? or is this not a good way to do it?
ONE MORE THING! when laying up the layers this weekend, how long should i wait inbetween each lay up to add another layer of glass??? can it be tacky to the touch?
THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
