Its definately worth an email. The minimum it would have would be 2 3500# axles. If you're at 6500# plus the weight of the trailer, you'd be pushing it. It is a good deal though....I've been searching myself for a trailier, and cheap ones are scarce.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

How do you fit these kinds of stress cracks??? I know for less "spider web" stress cracks you drill a small hole at each end of the crack and then V notch it out. However with these they are VERY fine, and go allllll over and I almost would assume if I were to sand it down and put a flow coat of resin over this area they would disappear? However I could be totally wrong, could someone please help here???

Also, what kind of material do i need to make "peanut butter" for when I being fiberglassing?

I have used a product called Q-CELL. These are micro-spores. They are so small and fine that they feel like liquid. This meterial is added to the resin to give it body or to thicken so as it doesn't run like liquid anymore. Add more you get a thicker consistency just like toothpaste or peanut butter. Once the right consistency is acheived you add your catalyst and thats it.
Hope that helped.
Cheers

Peanut butter is a mixture of cabosil, micro balloons and chopped strand. Kick the resin first, then add the other stuff. If you add the other stuff first, then it is much more difficult to throroughly mix in the catalyst into the thick mixture. Much easier to kick the resin first.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Hey everyone! I apologize for not getting photos and info to you sooner. The weather was crappy around here and I didn?t get outside to take some photos.
I am hoping that you all will take some time and read threw these questions I have and all give you inputs on how to attach these questions.
(see attached photos for more information)
Question #1, I noticed here where the two piece of the boat meet, that when I go to put the rub rail back on that these holes for the screws look pretty stripped out. My question is how do I fix these holes so they are nice and tight?
My opinion: I thought I had a great idea in just taking a strip of 1708 and putting it on the outside edge of the hull shell. This would seal the blown out holes and give the screws something to bite to. However I found this to be a problem because when you would go and put the interior shell on, the hull would be 3/16?? larger thus not fitting.
Your opinion?

Question #2 As said before the way I am redoing the stringers is a bit of an innovation. I am cutting one side of the stringer out, cleaning all the old wood out, then putting new wood in and then re glassing the side that was cut out. This is done to save on material and still keep a little of the factory glass. So my question is what should I use to adhere the new wood to the existing fiberglass? Epoxy is out, just too pricey so how should I do this?
My opinion: I thought I could coat the one side in resin and use a combination of that and ?peanut butter?, apply it to the wood and fiberglass and then clamp them together adhering them.
Your opinion?

Question #3. I have to get a new gil bracket (which I hope you are all still looking for that Iboat deal!) With this said I have several holes in my transom. How do I fix these holes and give the exterior transom fiberglass good integrity even tough I will be drilling 24 new holes later down the road?
MY opinion: I was going to take some csm and apply it to the interior of the transom, then take and apply one layer of 1708(this is to just give the exterior layer some strength again. Then I plan on going to the exterior side of the transom and applying ?peanut butter to the holes and fill them in and sand smooth.
Your opinion?

Question #4 This is the second part to question #3. When I go and put a new gill bracket on it will be next spring. With this being said the transom work will all be completed and I am wondering on how to ensure that these threw bolts wont allow water to get in the transom and destroy all this work I have done!
My opinion: I was going to drill out the holes a little large and then fill them in with resin. Then when it came time to install the bracket I would drill the proper size holes in the ?resin holes? and this would keep any and all moisture away from the wood. Well the problem is funds are tight and I don?t have the bracket as of now to drill the proper holes, thus I cannot go that rout, so what?s the second best way?
Your Opinion?

LASTLY I am putting the wood in my transome this weekend and I still have to coat the wood in resin (to seal it). My question is, can i seal the wood with resin and add the construction addheasive and then clamp it all together at once? or is this not a good way to do it?
ONE MORE THING! when laying up the layers this weekend, how long should i wait inbetween each lay up to add another layer of glass??? can it be tacky to the touch?
THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Lots of questions

#1 fill the holes with epoxy and milled fibers then redrill, or just forget about about those holes and drill new ones an inch or so away.

#2 For the stringers forget the putty (peanut butter), just glue the stringer to the one side you left and screw it in place to hold it. PL or 5200

#3 A layer of glass on the inside, then fill, then another layer on the outside will be plenty strong. A couple of layers of mat will be fine, but 1708 can be used.

#4 That method will work with epoxy, but not polyester. But it makes no difference whether you do it now or next spring when doing it this way.
Coating the hole with resin then using 5200 or a similar product will seal them also

# More than one layer of glass can be done in each application. How many layers of what type of glass are you going to apply?

I was actually thinking about doing something similar with the stringers, but i planned to use epoxy to get the best bond to the wood and old poly resin. I figured that way i would use a bit less overall. No clue how good of an idea it is though... i guess we will have to see what the experts think.

when you do the transom...paint it with resin.....let it allmost cure....then paint it again and add the glass....that will give you the best water seal.

you can do 2 layers at a time.......not 3 as the exothermic heat will cause the resin to go brittle........

because you are using un waxed resin....you have 24-48 hours or longer to laminate the next layer on with out ruff and scuffing.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

As far as the rub rail goes, if you wanted to glass anything with a strip of 1708, do the inside edge of the hull unless there is something that would prevent that from happening...that's what you are going to want to get ahold of for the rub rail anyway....the holes going through the cap are just a way to a means. My glastron uses a simple strip of plywood an inch wide all around the edge pop riveted to the glass, and then the SS screws sink into the wood for grip.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Hello alllll!

Well this was a big weekend for me. I got about half of the boat tabbed in and got the wood for the transome in. As always, I have a few questions regarding how I preformed this work.

When adhering the transom and the wood together, I coated both boards with resin, then I glued the wood together with construction adhesive, then after all that dried for a day I came back and cleaned the area with acetone and began to put ?some peanut butter? and about 1 qt of resin on the transom and the back side of the new wood to be installed. I then put the wood in the boat and using my ?threw bolt? holes for the bracket, I bolted the wood up against the transom squeezing them together.
So what do you guys think, that was the exact procedure. I did use ?gunk? to bed the transom but that was exactly what I did, so Did I do it right?

Now ,my plan is to put 6, MAYBE 7 layers of 1708 biax on the interior side of the wood to give those twin 250?s something strong to hang on to. Hopfully by the end of this week I will have all the layers glassed in.

Thoughts?

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Ah! One other thing. So all my stringers are tabbed in for the front half of the boat. However my plan was to use this ? oz cloth to cover the entire stringer and ?water proof? it. But this weekend when I went to use this ? cloth I noticed it wanted to use a TON of resin, almost like it is so fine that it doesn?t want to accept the resin, and with this being said I could not get it to adhere to the vertical surfaces. It just wanted to peel off as if it wasn?t even dabbed with resin. Have any of you had this problem with this type of CSM ? oz???? I just don?t know how to use this stuff. I mean it was using as much if not more resin than the Biax was and it still was hard to get to attach to the wood stringer.

Photo?s to follow tonight!

You should have no problems using 3/4oz CSM, it's normally about the easiest thing there is to work with. Pre wet the surface and stick it on, use a fuzzy roller to wet it out completely, it shouldn't take much resin. Did you pre coat the stringers with resin and let it cure before you started glassing?
