work space.....clean........ha !......its a boat building area !:D

IF.....you can walk with out knocking over a beer bottle.....then you have to manuver past the piles of deck wood.......tip toe thru the power tools, then reach past the spent aceitone rag area......(dont slip on a beer cap) and thats just to touch the hull!!!!!!

when people see my shop......with the 2 inches of dust on the floor.....if they arent sneezing.....they are trying to squeez theu without getting dusty........fat chance !

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

The procedure I did with saving the old stringer fiberglass is working GGRREAAT! (I will recap for those of you who forgot out me this past week!)

I took the grinder and cut right down the top of the stringer and peeled back one side of the rotting wood, while leaving the other side still tabbed in and intact to the hull. I then cleaned out all the old rotting wood from the inside of the fiberglass that was intact and then replaced new wood. I slapped resin all over the exisisting intact fiberglass then coated the entire stringer in glass. I then put PL5200 on the stringer and then screwed the intact fiberglass to the wood and let it dry. It worked out great! They are as solid as a rock and that was before I tabbed in the open side, I can?t wait to see how strong they are after I have tabbed these in today!!!

Take Care!

I'm thinking about doing the same, let me see if I got this right.
You cut the top off the stringer glasswork, then extricated the wood, how? a chainsaw?
Then you dropped a new stringer down into the original glass with fresh resin?
Or did you peel one side of the glass down to access the wooden stringer? Then screw it back to the new wood w/ fresh resin?
Thats what it looks like.

BTW, yeh, Craigslist is awesome,
I just got a $500 lincoln mig welder for $200 , hardly used.!

What gives with the nationwide craigslist search. I typed in a Honda model and it said; "Your search - honda - did not match any documents."

So I just typed honda and got the same response; "Your search - honda - did not match any documents."

Am I missing something?

Yeh, type honda outboard, not just honda or you get cars.
This is the results for "honda outboard".

JonesG yes that is correct on the stringer procedure. Was it faster? ABSOLUTLY NOT, did it save material ABSOLUTLY! sooo you have to pick which one you want to scarafice. I did just like you said i cut the stringer, peeled back one side of the stringer, then used a crowebaR to remove the wood, then ground down the fiberglass clean so that the new wood, would adhere to the exisisting fiberglass. than i used pl5200, gunk, and resin to make the wood adhere. I screwed the wood and layer of fiberglass together and let it dry over night then backed the screws out.

Great job!!! It's going on a year and I haven't even finished my stringers yet. I love those boats! What did you have in mind for power?

I did almost the same thing with my stringers except that I cut the glass down to about 3/4 inch from the floor. Then I mixed p/b and filled the little troughs (if you can call them that) then layed the stringers into them that way. The resin oozed out of the edges so I just brushed it along the length to flatten it out.

I have attached a few photos of the new Armstrong B bracket that I found on Craigs list for 800 dollars! I called arm strong and this sells for 3200.00!!! This bracket is like brand new and I tell ya Craig?s list is the place to get deals! I also included a few photos of the A-frames we built to flip the interior liner, and then also set the liner back into the hull.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

I want you all to take a look at this?..this is what the inside of the bow looks like. The cut tons of little 6x6 piece of wood, which was done to allow the bow of the boat to bed front to back and left to right (it basically crowns at the center of the bow, then falls away in all directions)?.I thought this was SO interesting to see how they accommodated the curvature of the hull?..
SO I NEED YOUR HELP?this area of the bow deck was soft?and I cut this open to let the wood dry out, then pour resin over and into these 6x6?s and then REfiberglass over this area THEN add a 2X4 support over that just to be sure that its solid?..my question to you all is do you think this procedure will be strong and in your opinions O.K. I don?t wanna scrape out all of these 6X6 squares and have to recut them?.so my solution is to ?salvage them? by pouring resin all over them (which will get in the cracks between the 6X6 and harden), thus restoring the woods original strength and then glass back over it?I REALLY NEED all you opinions please!!!! I thought about using that ?non rot? epoxy?.but im thinking about it and wondering just how much ?better? a job it would do compared just do using resin to strengthen the wood again?.your thoughts????

There is rot in there or it wouldn't have been wet and soft. So I would not try to salvage the plywood squares. Scrape it all out and toss the squares. Then laminate up 5 or more layers of 1708 and you will have a bow deck you can walk on and will not rot.

Or, get some of the core foam material that is pre scored in one or two inch squares so it bends over rounded surfaces, replace the wood with the core foam and re-glass.

But I would not try to salvage that mess.

Ok, I just gotta ask. Your boat already has a nice stainless steel Armstrong Transom Bracket on the back. Why did you buy a new Armstrong bracket?

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

WHAT THE HECK IS THAT MESS????

of all the other products they could have used.......i just dont understand. stupid imho.

john....its rotted....loose it all.....applying resin over it will not work....resin is brittle without glass strands.

post a pic of the overall area there is other products that will work a lot better in a curved situation......heck even a peice of plywood with partial cuts on the underside,........but that idea of many squairs....is inviting rot

This would work its called curfing, I needed to do this for my transom because it is curved it worked very well and would be alot eaiser then trying to duplicate what is there.

A picture of the whole area would be appreacated.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

I am no boat expert, but I am a good carpenter. If curf is what you want then either many curf cuts in a 3/4 or more plywood is necessary or multiple layers of 1/4 ich ply does a pretty slammin job of making a hostile curve come together pretty nice. Keep up the hard work, this is my favorite post.
