Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

6 or 7 layers of 1708 is waaaay over kill....three layers is the current thickness of your hull!

6 or 7 is a waste of cloth.......3 is more than sufficent....just run each consecutive layer a little farther on the hull by 2 inches or so.......(and into the bilge)
if you do that your transom will be rock solid

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

hmmmmmm not sure what is happening....are you sure its 3/4 oz?

the thicker matts take lots of resin.....as they are for building bulk.....the 3/4 oz wets out with one pass of a roller on a wet out table......

try pouring the resin directly on the matt....then take a squeegee and smear it around and work out the air........then take our roller and remove excess resin......

for detailes on a wet out table....see the hull ext thread.....its after the transom instlation

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

PREVIOUS QUESTION " I am totally confused on how the transom truly gets its strength. I say this because: I am taking 2 layers of 3/4 inch ply and sandwiching them together with a bit of resin and a bunch of the pl5200 (then let dry), thenput resin allll over the interior of the exterior fiberglass and then put the wood up against this and clamp them together and sandwich the wood and exterior fiberglass together(then let dry). Then put about ? thick fiberglass layers which will run over and bond into the sides of the hull (starb and port). ??. Now I know the threw bolts are going through the wood through the exterior fiber glass and bolting the interior all together, but to me it just doesn?t make sense? I mean It seems like if that fiberglass that ties the interior layers of fiberglass to the hull fails on the sides of the boat..BANG that?s it the motors will just pull right threw the exterior fiberglass and that?s that! I mean maybe I don?t really know how strong fiberglass is?but dang?.am I missing something?just wondering if anyone can explain to me how the transom gets all of its strength. I mean granted after I put the ? think layer of fiberglass on them I am going to attach some stringers to it and then that?s it, but I?m confused? can anyone explaine this to me?!?"

OOPS with that being said I have to respectfully dissagree. The orginal had 1/2 layer of fiberglass in the middle of the transome where the brackets were mounted.. With that being said since i dont know where the "new" bracket will mount I am planning on putting 1/2 thick layer over the entier transome. I am ASSUMEING that the transome gets 90 precent of its strenght frm this interior layer of glass since the threw bolts attach to this instide layer the majority of the twin 250's force will be applied to this layer of fiberglass.

If someone can clear all this up for me please do!!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

The photos below are,
1. here is a photo of the stringers. You can see where i left the one side the the existing fiberglass in place and am going to fiberglass the one side in.
2. Here is what the exterior of the hull looked like when I put all my threw bolts in to attach the transome wood to the exterior fiberglass. ( the wood spacers were put in place becuase the bolts were only threaded at the last 3/4'' of the bolt, thus i needed to space them out a bit.
3. Here is after i put the first layer of glass in the transome! came out pretttttyyy good !!!!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

Hey guys! Well here are some updates as to what has been taking place. I have finished putting 4 layers of 1708 biax on the transome and I will now be running the new stringers up the transom and glassing them into the transom.
Also, you'll notice the bow stringers are done. However yes in some area's there is quite a bit of air. I had a buddy help me put this on and I wasnt watching him. Im not planning on gringing it out cuz we did coat all the stringers in resin before we glassed them and then we encased them in 3/4 oz cloth. So its not like the 3/4 is giving it any strenght so I dont think it will be nessary to repair the air in the 3/4.... your inputs please????

I also test fitted the V bunk floor....I Will Glass this in tomorrow and then grind down the sides to prep for carpet.

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

HELLLOOOO ALLLL!!! Well, I made it to the 4th page! Man felt like I fell off the face of the earth!!! Well, I have been quite busy! Me and a few friends cut the rest of the stringers and cleaned the one sided piece of fiberglass and then we began cutting out all the wood for the stringers which was a day of work in itself. We were like Santa's little helpers, all cutting difference piece and fitting them in place. We then bedded all of them and resined them to the existing fiberglass. After these dried for a day we then came back and Tabbed in the other side of the stringers first with a 4 inch tab, then right after with an 8 inch tab both of these were done in 1708 BIAX. And well we just kept on goin like Forest Gump.....and before you know it we were 100% done with tabbing all the stringers! So needless to say this weekend made us 95 percent done with the Hull work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOOOOOHOOOO!!! Now the plan is to come back with 3/4 oz glass and "water proof" the rest of the stringer. This was a great weekend for us! We ended up getting a lot done, like I said only about 2 hours of glassing the stringers completely in and we are done with the hull work! The one photo shows all the stringers fitted in place. I ran out of light tonight to take another photo of the tabs, but I promise the work looks great!
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE WONDERING!
The procedure I did with saving the old stringer fiberglass is working GGRREAAT! (I will recap for those of you who forgot out me this past week!)

I took the grinder and cut right down the top of the stringer and peeled back one side of the rotting wood, while leaving the other side still tabbed in and intact to the hull. I then cleaned out all the old rotting wood from the inside of the fiberglass that was intact and then replaced new wood. I slapped resin all over the exisisting intact fiberglass then coated the entire stringer in glass. I then put PL5200 on the stringer and then screwed the intact fiberglass to the wood and let it dry. It worked out great! They are as solid as a rock and that was before I tabbed in the open side, I can?t wait to see how strong they are after I have tabbed these in today!!!

UPDATE! I was blessed with finding a brand-new Armstrong B bracket on Craig?s list with a full transom swim platform! These list for 3200.00!!! I got mine for 800.00!! 150.00 shipping! All I have to say is the deals are on Craig?s list!
I am going out of town on work training this week, so no progress will be made till next weekend, so take a look at the photos, PLEASE make some comments, (I love to read your thoughts on opinions) and I will get back with you all next Sunday with updated photos of the glass work and photos of this new bracket!

Take Care!

Re: HUGE PROJECT!! 30' Scarab Sport overhual

God I love scarabs....

Beatiful boats.

Anyway, if it had a trailer, I could do it for way under $8,000.

and thats with tha A-frames I would have to build/buy to lift that hull and cap up/off.

but I would buy used old crappy engine(s) untill i could afford/find a decent set.
