I interpreted it as the vacuum test was only used on the lower half of the outdrive. I am NOT an I/O guy so Not sure what that means, was hoping you would.

Hey Jay,

The pictures of Possum Kingdom brought back some horrendous images. I own property out there in the Cliffs Resort, on the Southeastern part of the lake down by the dam. The fire swept thru our area and destroyed 32 homes (some of which were in the millions), several of our condos, the front main gate and meeting center, our motor home campsite, and of course all the vegetation. Our property was saved by a deep ravine and luck hole #13 of the golf course. We drove out there a few weeks later and it looked like a nuclear bomb went off. Everything was flattened. It was so sad to see... But, folks are starting to rebuild, the resort is going around and replanting 1000's of trees, and we have had some rain recently. The lake as of today is now only 6-7ft. low vs. the 15-20ft. low it was.

Jay, do you have the contact info for the guy you purchased your bravo from. I am all about buying local if possible and especially helping folks out there rebuild. I might still need a few parts for my boat as I am still in the process of fixing things the previous owner told me nothing about. Ahhhh...

Take care!

I sent you a PM with his info. I was wondering how the recent gains did for the lake level. A lot of our lakes are near normal now. The lake that I am on is now only 1 foot under. Thats what 6 inches of rain in 24 hours will do for you.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Jay If you haven't found the issue yet I wonder if the oil pressure gauge issue is a mismatched sending unit and gauge where the sending unit is going in one direction for resistance and the gauge is meant for the opposite direction on resistance. If not then it has to be the gauge since that's the last thing left in the circuit but the fact that disconnecting the wire makes it go to zero makes me thing the gauge gos from 0 psi at full resistance to 80 psi no resistance and the sending unit is at zero resistance and goes to 240 ohms or whatever the max resistance is meant to be. When your engine is running does the gauge move at all or is it still pegged at 80 psi? because if I am right in my first theory it would go lower once you start it. If it doesn't move at all unless disconnected its got to be a bad gauge or a short inside the gauge which can be repaired if you want to do that.

We will be up in Bastrop this summer on the other side of the lake for Boy Scouts Summer Camp I am not looking forward to seeing the devastation across the lake. I am in New Braunfels and when that happened we had smoke coming all the way down here from there. I am hoping the lake is back up enough to take the boat out for the boys to enjoy.

I am going to be doing some fun playing out in Lake Limestone this summer with some family that lives near there maybe we should plan an Iboats Texas get together sometime would be great to get all the drydock boats out and enjoy them together. I am still planing on having mine out there this summer lots of work to do.

That's a lot of boat with not a lot of room for passengers.

The CVX-20 was more about style & performance over function...the Jet with a diverter on it is very very fun. (Personal taste...I don't like their looks as much without the optional windshield.)

Here's a really nice one at our annual Classic Glastron meet...I love how the stern flows right to the water:

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration SPLASH

If you watch my videos you will know that I purchased a set of Gauges for the Sea ray. They were from Great Lakes Skipper and had the Sea Ray logo on them and everything. After I got them I realized I jumped the gun. The Temp Gauge only said low and hi, and I was missing the volt gauge. So I called Great lakes skipper to see about an exchange to another Teleflex set that they carry (they offer a 30 day exchange). This one had everything I needed. So they sent me an RA, and down at the bottom was listed a "restocking fee" on open items. Ummm... all of their items are opened, they sell overstock without boxes. I said WTH, I need the gauges anyway, so I sent them back. About a week later I got an email with my in store credit from them, and low and behold, there was the restocking fee. Here is my beef with that. In the ebay auction there is NO MENTION of a restocking fee, and with ebay you must mention any "hidden" terms. So I called to talk to someone about it. The lady I spoke with said that is their policy, and there not be anything done about it. UUUUUUUGH!! I asked her how can you not state there is a restocking fee in the auction, and then slap it on a customer when they need to exchange an time. She did not have an answer for that, and said that I would need to speak with the shipping manager, but he would need to call me back. Ok.. Fine. So about an hour later I got any email... not a phone call. but and email asking what he could do for me. I just responded back that is he does not have the courtesy to call me back, I will let eBay handle this. That is the last I have heard form them. I did however order the set of gauges that I need, and they are on their way, but I am still out the hefty restocking fee. I will wait until they get here and then open a case with ebay. I am sure that they will be glad to take a look at this hidden fee case.

So beware when dealing with online people, and make sure they do not charge hidden fees.

Here are the gauges I purchased.

I didn't know that about Great Lakes Skipper...I'm sorry you had to find that out, but I appreciate you sharing your frustration!

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration SPLASH

jay, great job and great videos. i have a couple questions though as im looking into doing my own restore.

first, is there a reason you went with polyester resin versus an epoxy? just cost? i noticed a poly resin bucket in one of the videos.

second, about how much of the 1708 did you use in your project? i dont know if i can get by with 25yd doing a 20' resto or if i should just buy the 48yd roll

third, when applying the transom to a hull that is designed for an outboard, do you have any suggestions on how to apply the proper clamping force? ideas i had were cement bags or using beams to apply pressure, but im not sure that will do what is needed.

fourth, how much of the aero foam did you use? did you get away with just using the 2ga kit? did you give any thought to not using foam at all?

thanks so much and again GREAT work. its such a help

Jay

Sorry to hear about the guages. I was looking to buy some things from them but will probably steer clear now. There is another ebay place I wouls trust that has had guages on there one a full set of sea rays as well. The ebay name is horseheadtraders. They are A&A Marine from my home town in Manistee MI. The have a faria set that I would love to get iif I ccould talk the wife into letting me spend more on guages than I did on the boat. Of course with what I've already spent on supllies and the motor I've tripled what I spent on the boat and trailer already.

It has bee almost a year since I bought everything, and I do not remember how much I bought at all. Check out my blog and I think it is close to the front and will have a video on it.

As far a poly... The resin i used it is because it is what the boat was built with originally. Epoxy is expensive, and the ratio mixing has to be perfect. It is very much overkill in these type of boats.

I used 45 gallons of resin for my boat. There is quite a bit of waste with any resin as there is residue left in your cups, on the rollers.. etx. So lets do the math.

A 5 gallon pail of Poly was 135.00 and I used 9 pails.... that equals $1215

From us Composites, a 5 gallon pail of epoxy is $303.00... X9... equals $2727.00

That is a HUGE difference for something that will outlast our families interest.

We are almost ready to start with the updates to the Sea Ray. I have almost every part I need (except the swim platform, but is coming soon) and my Dad and i are waiting for a nice weekend to get started.

We went to the boat show this past weekend and I have to say, if you are in the market to buy a boat, that is the place to buy it. The prices were incredible!

Anyway, I will be starting a new series soon with the Sea ray, so stay tuned.

Here is a little video I made before I got my Mac, and I thought I would post it up and see what everyone thinks.
