J run that same pressure test on the lower end and look for the same results then pill a vacum test in the same manner but without compressed air of course!

J, just wanted to say what a great job on the boat and thanks for all the great idea's from the detailed video and pictures. Can't wait to see the swim plat form. We put on the glastron last season, it makes a huge difference in the extra room. Again great job.
Doug.

I ran a pressure test for sure 9and it held), but according to Don S., you are not supposed to pull a vacuum on these drives.

Well I finally took the boat out of storage to get some work done before spring. This time it is the trailer brakes. I have had a sneaky suspicion that they have never worked right, and after I tore into it, I we correct. The master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and bearings were all toast. So I replaced it all. That has to be one of the messiest jobs on the face of the earth, but that trailer will almost stop my truck now. It is amazing the amount of control I have towing this thing now. If your trailer brakes are not working, take the time to do this.

Altogether I am out about 200 bucks, and about 4 hours time.

Here is the first video... I will have the other one up tomorrow.

Enjoyed part one. I'll be doing this to my trailer in spring as well.

Replaced the surge master in fall, but the brakes still didn't work, so I'll be replacing both wheel cylinders too.

Great tutorial! I already knew how to do wheel bearings, but didn't know those bearing grease packers were so cheap. I've always done it the old fashioned manual way, but I like your way better!

one tip when installing the seal you can use a socket or piece of 2x4 to place on top of the seal and then hammer in it so it puts even pressure to drive it in.

another tip with the grease gun is to work on a bench over cardboard to eliminate the mess on the floor and grip the grease gun tube in the vise lightly (very cumbersum) when not mounted and to use small pieces of cardboard to clean out the old grease to save the sacraficial rags from disposal. Another good helpfull vid.

I have worked in the construction and farm equipment repair world for most of my life. Over the years I have accumulated a large number of different sizes of tubing, pipe, piston wrist pins, dozer track pins, anything that would fit a different size of seal, bearing race or anything else that would need to be driven into place. Saves a lot of money on special tools and makes the work go much faster.
Just my 2 cents worth.
I have been following your rebuild and using much of what you have done as a guide.

Eclipse,

That is some good stuff to have. I honestly never thought to use a socket :face palm: I was always taught ti use a punch... and the socket or pipe makes perfect sense.

Fanny,

I HATE grease guns!!!! You are so right in your suggestions, but I have never been the one to take the easy way :D

Well Frisco, the older one gets the smarter or lazier we become. No way I can work as hard or long as I used to. This rebuild is definitely one thing to check off on my list of things that I do not want to do again.

That is what I never want to say. I try to just learn easier ways to doing something (usually it is a better tool) these past few months after we put the boat away and I had weekends free again I realized something. I really need to be working on something. My whole attitude changes, and I start feeling worthless. The cool things about forums like these is that you can share your project with the world.

You can get them most anywhere they sell tools. Harbour freight most likely, the set I have at work are from Snap-On. That pic I posted I just pulled off the internet.

I knew there was a tool for that, and I should have used it, but I went at it old school this time :D
