Good question bleedblue. I was just wondering the same thing because I am about to coat my bilge area before I drop my engine back into my boat.

The bilge coat was good stuff, but I wanted a two part epoxy type coating. Bilge coat is just enamel.

translation: if you are getting gel coat for the deck, just pay for a little extra and do the bilge in that stuff ha

Jay do you recall about how much gelcoat you used total for the bilge, locker and deck?

I used one gallon of the non waxed, and one gallon of the waxed for the final coat. It is a lot more expensive to use gel, but I really like the result.

Hi friscoboater. Recently discovered your videos and they have been a huge help! Next time you pull your engine, make sure to get it on video.

My boat is similiar to yours. Its a 97 SeaRay cuddy cabin. Your projects have made me worry about the stringer rot. Do you have any theories of the "root cause" of your rot. I'm sure you explained it somewhere in the past, but hopefully you wouldn't mind repeating it.

Thanks

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I know exactly how it happened. In the 90s Sea ray did not seal the deck very well at all on boats that did not have the fiberglass liner. The boats with the fiberglass deck liner, from what I have seen, do not suffer the same fate as mine. My boat had a fiberglassed plywood and carpet interior, with a cover the went over the tank. The carpet would hold water, and the hatch screws seeped water below. The real culprit on the Starboard side was the fuel vent hose. It went through the deck, and allowed lots of water into the foam. Now if you trailered the boat, and kept it in dry storage, it would avoid these issues. However, most boats do not have this luxury, and rain water gets in the deck. When I was shopping for my Sea Ray, I saw at least 20 that had the rot issue.

A little slow to reply. I'm suprised you see this with many Sea Ray boats. Everyone I talk to seem to think Sea Ray is a great boat. Hard to believe it has that positive reputation with so many boats rotting.

I'm a bit confused between the fiberglass deck liner versus fiberglassed plywood. Do you have any pictures of what it looked like before you started cutting up the floor? I assume its that same blue painted plywood? Mine is a 97 and has a white rough textured gelcoat on the entire floor. No carpet. I assume this is the "good" fiberglass deck liner?

I noticed a squeshy spot under the port rear seat. When I step on it, I hear a strange noise like air being compressed - a low frequency squeak. Hard to explain. I assume this is bad : (

sorry jay, but i just want to be clear, you used a gallon for each coat of just the bilge and ski locker? do you recall how much total you used for the 2 coats under the deck and the 3 coats you did above deck?

Yours has the liner, and those drained better. The ones with Carpet are the ones that I see rot the most.

Thanks. One other question, that I'm sure you have answered before but I can't find it using the search.

What are you feelings for rolling versus spraying the gelcoat? Why did you choose to roll it initially, and would you have done it differently now? I believe you said somewhere you would spray next time.

If I had a way to stop over spray, I think I would spray it next time.

We use two product at the body shop to prevent overspray...One is obvious, a cling plastic that comes in rolls about 2 foot wide and unfolds to over ten feet to completely cover the part of, or most of, a vehicle that we don't want to get overspray on...
The other is a spray on mask that goes on wet, dries to a protective film, ...it is sort of like a liquid soap that dries within minutes of being sprayed on then gets washed off with water...if you are interested, here are a couple of links to similar type products...
