You may already know this but you really want to watch your brake equipped axles for a while, particularly if you go down a lot of hills on your way to the ramp. My disk brakes get very hot on the mile or two long trip down to the ramp and I usually let them cool a bit before the dunk so I do not have a risk of the dramatic change in temp either warping my disks or ingesting water into the hubs as they rapidly cool. I usually check my hubs for grease about once a month in the summer, just a visual on the bearing buddies to make sure they have a bit of positive pressure on the hub.

Lisle brake bleeder.jpgHere's a tip from a salt water boater, for wheel cylinders. Those rubber boots are not water proof, water gets in and corrodes the piston and then it seizes. What I do is take off the rubber boot, coat the area under it with synthetic caliper grease and put a little on the top edge of the metal piston. Then replace the rubber boot. I also take OMC triple guard grease and grease up the threads on the adjuster and pivot points of the free backing shoes. I have a flush system installed but it doesn't help the wheel cyl corrosion issue or the adjuster. You could also seal the edge of the boot to the wheel cyl with hi temp RTV and also put some in the hole that the pushrod goes in. If you keep the water out they last longer and work better. Finally to make brake bleeding easier, use a simple one man brake bleeder by Lisle. This works great because it keeps air from getting sucked back in the line. Of course we used a clean Coke bottle half full of brake fluid and a clear plastic hose back in the 70s to do the same thing....

btw, to tighten the spindle nut, I like to torque it to about 20 ft lbs (snug) while turning the drum, then back off and hand tighten it till snug, then put in the cotter pin or retainer. This seats the bearings against the races.

That's the way I was taught to do it also. Seat the bearings with a wrench, then back off and hand tighten. Then keep checking them for the next few weeks for rattles.

Great info guys. I cut that part out because I used a big wrench at first and then forgot to film the backing off part. I did not want to confuse.

I have seen those brake bleeders before, but they cost money, and in these times, not everyone can afford it. I had the send set of hands, and so we did it the old fashioned way.

My brother showed me something when I was 10, bleeding his VW bugs. 2 feet of ruber hose (fits over the bleeder valve tight) and a rubber band to give it a hoop that wont let an air bubble back in the valve, and then run the other end of a hose into a small bottle. open the valve a bit to allow flow and pump the breaks.

basically, if you did it right, the hoses will fill with fluid, the catch bottle will keep a little back preasure and prevent a mess.

that was untill he figured out he could get me to reach the peddles and pump like an idiot.

Well... I broke down and paid someone to do something on the boat for me. Last year the Sunpad was getting pretty gross, and needs to be recovered. After doing a lot of research, playing with the sewing machine, and getting really frustrated, I decided to take it to a well known upholstery shop in town. The cost was reasonable, and i know it will be done perfect.

All good brutha,

Not sure I'm interested or even capable of upholstery work? I'm scared of it.... My bud Howard is the local Jedi master, so I support him.... Sorry if I missed it, but what is the ETA on the swim platform?

Mind sharing who the shop was? Cost?

Jay this is not a power brake bleeder, its basically a plastic cup with some hoses, that stays half full so that air does not get pulled back in, cheap and easy and you really can do it all by yourself.

Well, I finally had some time on Friday to replace the gauges on the Sea Ray. I purchased a set on Ebay for 200 bucks, and I really like the look. The original oil gauge and tach were defective, so I decided to replace them all. It took me about 3 hours to complete laying on my back, but it is finished. I am very happy with the outcome.

Here is the before shot

The Speedo was missing its bulb (thanks ebay) and I went to Autozone and picked up a blue bulb, but it is the wrong color. The seller is shipping me a new bulb, but I think i like the royal blue better. What do you think?

I think the new gauges look significantly better! $ well spent! I like the new replacement bulb better to.

If your considering the LED runs tucked up & hidden around the boat like CC254's LEDs, you might see which bulb color fits w/ those colors. Maybe the royal matches their hue.

As a matter of fact, i will be adding LED lights soon, and I think they are more royal.

Does anyone know if they make LED replacement bulbs for these gauges?

Just finished the vid. Wow, somebody has really upped their production values. Complete w/ audio fades:). Well done!

BTW: You might want to remove the PH# from your hand in a few shots. Before everyone & their brother watches it on YouTube.

I guess it's a good think the fuel sending unit was just hung up from sitting, instead of having your tank siphoned.

Yeah, $5 gas headed our way. What's that translate to for boat dock gas prices?

Your still setting the bar higher with every update, looking good! Wish I could answer the gauge LED question. I'd bet most LED lite 'string' sellers would have just the LED's bulb available too. Probably not the all but the maybe biggest LED ebay sellers though.
