New to Iboats. Been on the water my whole life, but just acquired my "first" boat - a project. I just wanted to thank you guys (Frisco, Bear, Ooops, etc...) for posting your progress and sharing information. The posts are good dose of reality and motivation (it appears that both are needed). In any event, I picked up this 1975 Chris Craft Lancer and Shoreland'r Trailer for about $900. The hull looks in good shape and the vinyl is decent. The boat has been dry stored every time out of the water for the past 21 years. The engine (230 h/p) is tired, but runs. It will need some repower and a slight knock in the lower engine needs to be investigated. The reason I have been following this thread with interest is that there is a "soft spot" around the ski locker and in the back of the boat near the transom. I imagine when i lift the carpet and deck, I am going to be in for a nice treat and may have to do some transom work as well. Will probably do a non-skid instead of putting the carpet back in. Once I get into the restoration, I will start a new thread and post some pics/video of my progress. I know that I would never tackle a project like this without all the resources and information available from the contributors on this site. Thanks for sharing - it really is helpful.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration SPLASH

I had a little bit of time so I wanted to post some updates. We have been out on the boat every weekend, and we are having a blast. Dad and I have cut the template for the carpet and sent it off to get cut, and I hope to have it back in a couple of weeks. I have to say, cutting out that template was WAAAAAAAAY harder than I thought it would be. It was like wrestling a pig covered in salad oil. After about 4 hours, we finally had it done. Once that was done we had to come up with a color. That took hours and hours with the first mate out in the sun light comparing. We finally chose a grey/silver berber that will pick up the greys in the boat. We plan to eventually replace all the ugly blue carpet with grey soon anyway. So now we wait.

Last weekend we had a little indecent on the lake. As alot of you know, Texas is in a sever drought and our lake is about 4 feet low. I was going through a cut that I use every weekend, and there was a park ranger behind me, and a bunch of other boats in the same cut. Well I went too far to the starboard side and struck a rock at idle. It went from 10 feet to 3 feet in a flash. Once I was through the cut I jumped in to find out what I did, and All I found was two little nicks in the prop that can be fixed. I took off again and felt nothing out of the ordinary and we had fun the rest of the day. About 5 hours of skiing and tubing later the alarm went off... low gear oil. I panicked! I looked around the drive and I could not see any gear oil at all, and I was puzzled. I added more gear oil and we ran around to see if it would eat any more, and it seamed to be fine. Now the expansion tank was a little low already due to an air bubble from the rebuild, (Air gets trapped in the drive when you fill it and will burp for a while) and I had not refilled yet. It had been like that for weeks so all it dropped was about an ounce. I am just hoping that another air bubble popped up and dropped the tank down just enough to throw the alarm. Otherwise I am going to be out a lower unit.

Ouch, Scary!! Pray it was just an Air Bubble! I would have panicked when the alarm when off, after all that. I would think that carpet template wouldn't be that hard, guess I'm wrong. What did you use for template?? I have the snap-in carpet for mine.

Question: Was your original deck flooring made of any removable panels?? My sea ray has a "panel" on the decking. One panel looks like it is size of gas tank, & could remove it allowing full view of tank area. Ski locker is the same way.

Hope you get rain soon.

Yes it had a removable panel for the gas tank, but I chose not to do so. I have access panels to get to the fittings.

Hi Jay,

Just wanted to thank you for such an informative thread and congratulate you again on your achievements. This thread has been an absolute epic and the videos have been fantastic - you just can't beat being shown how to do something - there's only so much you can learn from reading about it. Well, perhaps that might only apply to me, but I am a total newbie to this.

You've given me the confidence to start my own humble resto job, although I can't see me finishing it anywhere near as quickly as you have! I'll certainly be referring back to the videos!!

All the best

Guy

No problem at all. I was hoping that this would help some people.

Had another set back today. The water pump is leaking through the weep hole. easy fix, but I have to fork out more money on this thing.

If I had a 454 (dear to my heart, my first family car I really remember - 1976 Chevy station wagon w/454), I would send you one from my parts boat for all your help, but I only have 4.3l parts. Hope all yours and your boat the best!

Nothing like working barefoot in the garage! look at 4:22 and you see a barefoot. HAHAHAHA! I thought I was the only one to work barefoot on my boat. I've watched a bunch of your videos and read most of your thread. Your work is awesome and you have inspired me to dive in head first on my restoration. Its a 1986 Glastron Z-16-S. Thank you for doing the videos!

Hey Friscoboater, I watched all your videos on the deck and stringer restoration, you have inspired me to cutup a bad calk job on the deck of my 89 Grady. The prior owner had the main and aux tanks replaced, but I feel a soft spot and am afraid of what I may find. I think it's worth a look to assess any possible damage. Thanks for the postings, keep em coming

Hey Jay, the garage looks nice.

That's boating. I burned a hole in the brand new exhaust hose on Friday. Seems it's always something.

Saw your videos of the tower install. Nicely done!

For the bimini you have a couple options. I like the Taco fittings, but you can get those or you have a ouple other choices but there are many options that will make it easy.

I have to pull my bimini off on one side to open it up since I installed the speakers. Not too big of a deal to do it once when we get there and once when we leave.

I like the idea of having tubes welded ont he side to further strengthen it. I had the same done when mine was built.

Hey Jay!

Just wanted to drop a quick post and say thanks for making all those awesome Youtube videos of this project. I'm sure it must have been gut wrenching when you realized that your Sea Ray had rotted stringers and deck. My Sea Ray Seville is over 25 years old with the deck soft in many spots. I too might need to be completing the same repairs soon. Your videos were not only professional but very informative. You did some incredible work to your boat, im sure you must be very proud! It's guys like you that tackle jobs like that and take the time to document everything that give the rest of us the courage to dig in and give it a try! Very inspirational work! Best of luck with the boat!

Yep, and I think I am going to have to replace the lower unit over the winter too.

I just ordered the board holders and a mirror today. Can't wait to use it.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Hey guys,

Many of you have seen teh video already, but I purcahsed a wake tower for the boat this past week. My son was sick (first week of school cold) this past weekend so my Dad and I installed it. I got it from bulletlines out of San Antonio and it went on ok, but I would change a few things if I had to do over again. These towers are made in china, and they have some fit and finish issues that you must work through. Not a huge deal, but over all a good tower. I like how the tower frames this wind shield. I forgot to take pictures, but I will this weekend.

Lots more little projects to come.
