The Carpet Template kit came today from Corinthian Marine. I hope that Dad and I can get it cut tonight and back in the mail tomorrow.

It is snap it carpet. It has a backing that will not let the water through.

My first reaction to your photos was "Dang that water looks clean!". Boating around northern NJ/Staten Island I never get to see that. In fact I seriously worry about the industrial chemicals eating through my hull.

How is your dash grounded, through the harness or heavy wire to the battery terminal block? How's the ground wire to your distributor? The reason I ask is because when I have an electrical problem, 9 times out of 10 it's the ground. I ran 10g tin plated copper wire to my dash and another to the stereo to get a good base circuit. The original layout was weak and gave me constant problems.

I really like that carpet site. It looks like high quality product. Looking forward to seeing how it works out.

We have not had rain for over two months here. So the water has really settled out and is somewhat clean.

I have replaced grounds and wires to no avail. I did fix the gas gauge though. It turned out I installed the pickup backwards, and the float was hitting the tank side.

SW gauges read backwards to most full ground will cause low reading and no ground will cause high reading. Most automotive gauges are exactly backwards. Might be worth a look.

I will re-check all the grounds when I can. I swear they are ok.

My little girls arm is just fine. There might have been a little drams with the injury. She was back at it the next day.

Stewart Warner gauges are different than most automotive gauges. My Baylinner uses an automotive style sender. If you unplug your sender and the hand reads full and then ground the wire and it reads low you then have this type of gauge. It is not referring to a bad or missing ground on the boat but the type of sending unit you require to run the gauge.

Can I mix Stewart Warner gauges with senders of another make, or vice versa?

Generally no. If mixing is intended, electrical characteristics must be determined in advance of installation to insure compatibility.

Pressure Systems:

Both gauge and sender should have the same impedance to be a perfect match. For best overall performance, we recommend that you use Stewart Warner gauges and senders together.

Other manufacturers will specify that their gauges work with Stewart Warner senders. We don't sanction the mixing and matching but in some cases, their gauges will match our pressure senders.

A 240 ohm gauge should be matched with a 240 ohm sender.

Jay,
I sort of stumbled over your LONG journey Tuesday night, and ended up spending most of the time between midnight and 4 AM following the progress of your project. Simply got stuck - while I badly needed to go to sleep...

In close to 1,500 posts, everything has already been said, but for me (although I so far only skimmed through some of the videos) this is inspirational, educational, sisu (look that up, it's Finnish), gutsy, and "crazy". Amazing that you endured and manage to have the energy to crank out such a nice end result.

Upon seeing the damage you discovered, I would have called it quits, parted the boat out, cut up the hull and paid the fee to lay it to rest in the local landfill (sad, but that's where they eventually end up), and bought something "different" (or picked up an engine-less hull).

Your journey should also be an alarm bell for everyone that is looking to buy a used boat with a carpeted interior (I have one...).
Personally, nowadays I try to always park on an incline (water drains), stern facing the south (sun for added heating), and provide ventilation under the tarps during the winter months. I'm also allergic to bow riders with so much interior "exposed" to the weather , but understand their "utility" for many in a sunnier climate, and on inland lakes.

Back in (native) Sweden, very few boats had the issues that are so common in the runabouts here in the US. Carpet on plywood, and limited or no "lay up" for the winter. When I grew up over "over there", boating was much more of a very dedicated hobby, than a "past time", and if you had a boat, working on it was half the joy. That was at least until American runabouts started showing up "en mass".

All that said, enjoy the boat and the heat. I used to live in Dallas (north) and endured 60 consecutive days once when the day temp passed 100F. I wonder if you are not going to be very close to that this year. Up here, PNW, summer just started (very late) and we're hardly a week into it - with boat still on the trailer since last year (been working on the house so really no spare time for the boat yet)...

Jay,

Glad to see you and your family enjoying the boat. I have a quick question and I do not know if I have overlooked the answer or not. How did you end up routing your fuel tank vent hose? I remember there being some talk about running it to the back of the boat and then along the side to the factory thru-hull fitting. Also, there was talk of getting a new tank filler cap with a built-in vent. Just curious!!! Have a blessed weekend, Steven

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration SPLASH

Hey guys, sorry for being MIA for a couple of weeks. Work just exploded, and I need to make up for a slow June and July. I really have not done much on the boat except replace the impeller last weekend as it decided to go to pieces. That was really fun to do in 105 degree heat at the boat ramp. It was nice that I did not have to take the drive apart on this one, as it is on the starboard side of the engine.

We have been dealing with just oppressive heat here, as we are about to beak an all time record on how many days we have been over 100 in a row (42). We have not had any rain since early June and our lake is dropping about 6 inches a week, and sometimes more. You have to be really careful and pay attention to your depth gauge. I am waiting for a little break in the heat before I really tackle some of the stupid issues, and right now I just deal with them.

Steven,

I routed it through the engine bay and out beside the fill neck. It worked out perfect.

I hope to get back on the boards more soon.

Just watched your recent video on youtube. Was your 575 amp battery a "starting" battery? I recently picked up 575 amp "starting" battery for my searay, but see in mercruiser manual that for the 454 (7.4), they recommend minimum 650amp battery. Guess I'll have to step it up. Wonder if I will I be able to setup the "starting battery" along with a regular deep cell/marine battery (& a switch)? Surprised your boat didn't have a factory depth finder in it? Good luck with the heat; our extreme heat & humidity lasted only a week. Keep Cool!!!

Yes, I did have a 575 in there, but jumped to a 1000, and it made a huge difference. Yes it did have a factory depth finder, but it did not work, and I was not going to try and replace the through hull fitting.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration SPLASH

A little off topic, but i just wanted to let you know that because of your you tube videos I am confident to undertake a major restoration of my father in laws Imperial v184. He past away several years ago and the boat has been pretty much sitting, exposed to the Connecticut climate for 3 years. The boat is by no means as nice looking as your Sea Ray but i think i can add some new design ideas to make it a nice boat. Just started a thread about it. Really appreciate all the effort you put into documenting all this. I practically feel like i know you and often time reference you by name in discussions with my wife about my restoration plans. I am new to this forum so looking forward sharing the experience and tapping into the experts out there. Thanks again
