Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration SPLASH

Thanks to everyone for the kudos, and compliments. I am sorry I have not been around much the past few days, but work has BLOWN up and I have to pay for all this fun I will be having. The cool thing is that my Dad has been riding with me and learning about what I do. This week and next week are really full, and I will not have any time on the boat. I will be taking the boat out for sure this weekend and having fun.

I had an idea about some new videos. Most of the "Episodes" are really long and cover alot of things. I think i am going to produce smaller snippets that cover certain tasks that I did. Alot of the time they are buried in a 20 minute show. I think that may help alot of people too.

Dont worry, I will be making new videos soon. One of course will be on how to organize and trashed garage...LMAO!!!!

As far as why I did not go with Duraback on this boat. My last boat, the Duraback was the final coating, and on this boat we are going to be putting in Snap in carpet. The Gel was cheaper than duraback, and I thought I would give it a try. The gel does not hide anything like the duraback does, but I did not care. I like them both, and each has its place.

Jay,
Just finished your videos. When you removed old name, what did you use to get rid of shadow of OLD NAME in the gelcoat? Polish with rubbing compound?, polishing compound?, OR did you have to sand with DA sander & fine grit? Also I have to remove adhesive/glue from removing old numbers, but I don't want to ruin gelcoat underneath on boat. What would you recommend? (mineral spirits, or acetone?)
Index of subjects in your videos would be great.
thanks again!!

I used mineral spirits to remove the glue, but the gel coat was not too faded, so the name did not leave much of a mark. I will be going back through and adding indexes in the video description area soon, and I will be also launching a request forum and I will film haw they are done. Short more task oriented videos.

Hey Jay,

How about some bloopers?

I think he covered that when he bought the boat and then realized he had to tear it apart.

Jay,
Now that this resto is done, is there part of you that is glad you bought a lemon considering the end result?

I know we all think the boat is better than could be purchased based on what you have done to it. At least I do.

one more question for ya. when you put another coat down on the front of your last boat, did you just lay down resin or did you put a layer of glass down as well?

Well guys I picked up the new name in Vinyl Lettering today from our sign shop. They made all our TX numbers and two name cut outs for $25 bucks. You just cannot beat that. I have one more day of work and we get to hit the lake this weekend. I cannot wait.

I also picked up some new pin stripping to replace the stuff that is cracking on the upper part of the hull. i did a small section this evening before it got dark. Man I hate that stuff. It is very hard to work with, and I have done lots of it in my day. Still hate it.

I hope to get some really good video of the boat this weekend. I was numb last weekend and just could not remember to video.

Jay, It has been a long and rewarding journey (much like life in general)!

Thank you for letting us share it with you! We all felt your triumphs and set backs and joys and sorrows along the way.

You have a beautiful family with obvious love and support....you now how a beautiful boat to enjoy with all of them.....and probably most importantly to make some very special memories that will last a life time.

Again, thanks for letting us share a part of that.

It has been so rewarding for us all!

Hope to see you out on lake Lewisville shortly.....you won't know me but I will be the one waving at you like I have known you for the last 2 years!

Jay,
Do you have plans for the stereo and have you found a good source for carpet?

I am going to do a modest stereo, but probably not until Winter. Yes I have a source her locally for marine carpet. PM me for details.

I have looked at that, but it just does not fit my needs. I LOVE the look and feel of the Berber with aqua mat. It really adds a look of class to the boat. That stuff is nice but a 12.95 a square foot, I would be looking at 800 to a grand. That is double the aqua mat.

We had another great day on the lake today, until my daughter hurt herself tubing. She is ok now, but you will see in the video that she hit pretty hard. We decided to come back a little early and then hit it again tomorrow. We did the naming ceremony today, and actualy had to do the de-naming all over again. When we put the paperwork in the glove box last week we did not take out the original interned add that had a picture of the boat with its old name. According to legend, you must do the ceremony again. So we did. Then we proceeded to re-name her, and that went perfect. She now has the new name on her stern.

Also yesterday when I took the cover off I discovered that the sun pad had turned a awful shade of pinkish brown. I have no idea what would have caused this. It was pure white last weekend and now looked terrible. I went autozone and got some vinyl paint, and now everything is all good. That stuff is awesome.

My neighbors Crownline has that exact same issue. When he leaves to cover on the vinyl on the deck turns a browning pick color. He leaves the cover off for a few days and the sun bleaches most of it back out. Don't be surprised if your turns again once the cover is back on for a period of time.

Maybe you will get lucky the vinyl dye will seal the stain in kinda like Kilz. Mark ended up having his deck recovered. That was just a few weeks ago. I have not talked to him since to see if he is still having the problem with the new vinyl. I'm with ya on the covered storage. Heck I built a $30K building at my place just to keep my $3K Sleekcraft Rebel and $6K 72 Cheyenne Super in. (Seems kinda silly when I look at it that way LOL.) Once again your boat looks fantastic. Maybe we'll see ya on the water one day.
