Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Just wondering Jay, are you going to change the rear seating arrangements? It seems to me this would be a great time to make the stern area into a more modern seating area like a bench with a sundeck arrangement, it could also make the captains call easier to install and give you more storage at the same time.....

Just throwing it out there

I have thought about it, but the first mate hates the large sundeck. It took up too much space and with this sea ray the little seats convert to a sundeck, and then back to a seat when you are running.

I just finished sanding down the stringers to get ready for capping. I should have that done today.

Good call on the Foam.....Jay listen to your father and may the force be with you...lol. I think your dad is spot on. Did you say wheat flour or wood flour? I use wood flour and love it. I would not worry about the few little air bubles on the bottom of the locker, I doubt it will give you any trouble.

I haven't seen quality plywood for $20.00 a sheet? I haven't seen anything straight, dry , un presssure treated and without knots for that price. Could you give us some more info on the plywood (where you got it etc.)?

Well you know how that works, if momma's happy everybody is happy! So tell me how you got her to be First Mate? My wife made it very clear that the only reason I get to be Captain is because she promoted me!

Looking good! Quick question, do you plan on foaming before or after the deck is down? I've been looking around and have seen some posts to do it before and some to do it after. I can say the the person who do did the floor in my Baja had done it after and some of the hole saw cut outs fell out of the saw and were at the bottom of the hull rotted out. When they glassed the deck out, they just glassed the snot out of the holes. I gotta think that one would do it after the deck is in place so the foam would expand aganist the ribs, stringers, and deck to make it stronger. What do you think?

I looked at the receipt again and I was wrong. It was 30 bucks a sheet. It is exterior BC sanded ply. I had to pick through the entire stack to find what I have. There are a few knots, but I will fill those with PB and then glass over them. It is not necessary to use marine PLY IMO.

I was going to pour it with the deck off until I saw a video the other day that scared me. That stuff can really get away from you. I plan on screwing down the deck and using a hole saw to cut fill holes and relief holes and then pour away.

I got the stringers all capped yesterday, and let me tell you, that was a PITA!!!! There are a few bubbles, and I even used a staple gun to hold it down. O-well. I am making the cleats and getting them glued in today, and if time allows I will cut out the deck.

Just a couple thought on pouring the foam, I tilted the bow down and poured from the front to the back. I expedited it to be kind of thick, it isn't. It runs almost like water when you pour it on a sloped surface. Also get a big, wide mouth, plastic funnel to pour it through. Have your act together when you mix it, it is amazing how fast it starts to foam up. Also, you can let it harden in the funnel and plastic mixing buckets, it peals right out after it sets up.

Did you drill relief holes in the back of the compartment, or let it run to the back and then fill up?

I drilled one hole in the front, in the deepest area of the compartment. I put the relief hole in the back in the shallowest part of the compartment. Sometimes I didn't have a relief hole, since I as putting down a section of deck, pouring and letting any excess squeeze out the opening in the rear. Given all of the ribs you have, I'm not sure that you will be able to do yours that way. It seemed like I used more than I thought I would. I did some volume calcs for each section, and it seemed like I always used more that the directions said I would. It was 90, so heat shouldn't have been an issue. By the way it doesn't stick to packing tape either. By the way, I also expected it to mound up, it really doesn't unless its in a confined space. It has a tendency to just spread out.

Hey, about the foam, I just did mine, when there is a closed compartment, like where my stringers met the transom and the bilge, you need a vent hole, so the air can escape, otherwise it will not fill the cavity, I tilted my bow up and we poured from the Stearn forward, I think we used 1 1/4" pour holes and 1/4" vent holes. We used 34oz mix cups and I stood outside the boat with two smaller mix cups, and I poured Part A in one cup and Part B in another, then poured both of them into the larger cup, then he mixed it and then just poured straight from the cup into the hole, if your quick you can use the same cup for a few pours then chuck it and get another. 2 people make it way easier! And I would highly recommend doing it with the deck in, that's the way its designed, it gave my boat so much more structure doing it that way, its awesome! The stuff adheres to anything like crazy, that's why its good to do in with the deck in, it'll glue everything, including yourself if your not careful.

I had completely glued in my deck and tabbed in sides as well first.

May also want to verify that the foam will stick to the red guard, otherwise you will lose all that structural rigidity that you are after.

He is right about the vent hole, now that I think about it I used one that was a 1/4" or 3/8". It damn near whistles when that stuff is expanding! You might even want to drill a couple in different areas, at the foam starts to come out of them, block them off with something heavy like a concrete block. That would allow you to track the areas where the foam filled up and areas where you might have voids.

Good point on the red guard too.

We even drilled a couple exploratory holes after to make sure its filled all up! I use PB to fill the holes after, that also seals the edge of the foam that was broken, I used a rotozip with a cutting bit to hog out the foam in the pour holes after, then filled with PB.

I am will go that route for sure with the foam. Thanks for the info.

Well I had a nice little surprise today. My Dad showed up at the house and helped me out for a few hours. I cannot belief how much I we got done today. All the cleats are installed, and 80% of the wood for the deck in cut and ready for glass. I will finish up the rest tomorrow.

As usual pictures and video soon.

I wish I could move as fast as you. Having a 3 year old to keep an eye on definitely slows me down.

One suggestion, order an extended swim platform. Might as well get it installed while you have the motor out.

You also mentioned earlier about running PVC conduit for wiring at a later time. Is that going in the floor or up in the sides of the hull?

Glad to hear that your dad was able to give you a hand. How is your mom doing? Just a thought, but are you considering doubling the deck where things are screwed down. I am going to glass the floor in mine, and then go back and add a sub-floor in the engine compartment. This way, I will have sacrificial wood to screw down my batteries and trim pump. Thanks, Steven

Yes I am going to do something like a double deck for sure. That way it keeps them out of water.

My mom is still not doing very well and she is very, very depressed right now. The doctors cannot give her a reason why her liver keeps failing, and then recovering, then failing again. He insides are just torn to pieces, and we are praying that they heal.

I would love to get a platform, but that is not in the budget this year. I looked into it, and it will be no big deal to add one later. The PVC pipe is out too. I just could not find a good route for it at all. I will just have to run things along the sides.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Jay,

I just glassed over my motor mounts yesturday and it was a PITA also getting the 1700 biax to conform to the rectangular shapped. I was hoping I could get one piece to drap over the whole thing, but that didn't happen. I learned recently that there is a huge difference in the drapability of different fabrics. The link below shows a comparison of two differnt fabrics drapped over a salid bowl. The one fabric, "Satin Weave" ( I think) drapped perfectly over the salid bowl while the plain weave had kinks and creases. The CSM you won't have a problem with, but the biax you might. You may not need the biax b/c you don't need to add stregth but if you do then maybe the shop where you get your supplies might have some of this drapable fabric on hand? It would make glassing your mounts soooo much easier.

I have not had any problems with the 1708 going over anything. Now I have a feeling that I will have some problems with the motor mounts.
