I have found a 2.0 works well, 1.8 isn't much smaller give it try on some paper first if you don't mind getting your gun dirty for a test run.
Cheers.

No problem. Find a goo breaking point and that is where I would stop the Carpet. My shelf just provided a good breaking point.

Sounds good. I was thinking of using some sort of rubber strip along the bottom edge of the carpet where the floor meets the sides of the hull.
Check my last post on CGOA. It's alive! I hope to splash this weekend.

Well, I am a little late with my update, but here is is.

I FINALLY got the glue off with MEK, and got the SKI locker floor and gas tank floor cut and glassed in. I will be cutting the deck real soon.

MMMMM grinding

Jay,

Congrats on selling the Glastron. Kinda hate to see it go. Don't get ahead of yourself and forget to install the engine mounts before installing the floor. I am probably going to see if I can find a short peice of 4x8 wood to use for engine mounts and bolting them to the stringers before glassing everything in. The factory mounts were simple plywood wrapped in a butt load of glass. What do you think? Is that a little over kill? Thanks, Steven

I think I am going solid with the mounts this time. Also they can go in after the deck is in. I kinda want to rent the hoist again and lower the beast in there and make sure I can get her level before building them. Then take everything and install the mounts. Then gel coat the whole thing.

Soooo, someone posted a comment on youtube about not being able to tell if you have eater in your oil from the dipstick today. Guess what I did? I drained the oil to double check. Let me tell you, it is VERY hard to drain the oil on an engine that is sitting on a pallet. That oil is perfectly clean. WHEEEWWWW!!!

It would be nice if you had one of these to check the motor mount installation. Kind of pricey though. Maybe you could sell it after you're done with it.

Looking good Jay. I like the ground wire template.
On the ski locker drain, maybe you cover the gap with a strip of ply with a 1" or 2" hole. Then cover the hole with a flat drain cover. You probably don't want stuff falling under the tank, especially sharp objects.
On the engine mounts, could you install the transom plate and take measurements from where the it mounts on the bell housing to the front mounts on the engine? Could be that they are close to, or on the same plane. Also, I'd make the mounting blocks out of stacked and glued ply. It would be strong and you probably have the scrap to use up.

You could put an access plate half way in the ski locker floor, so you could fish out whatever falls in.....

Clockwatcher is absolutely right about laminationg the engine mounts from plywood. If you look at solid wood ends they are genally cut from the heart of the log and will develope cracks sooner or later. Much stronger doing a lamination.

You could use a pourable transom material like Arjays or Sea Cast. It's $130 for the pail. I talked to their engineers and they said it will work. Just make a simple mold and pour. Then just predrill and mount. I made mine out of plywood, but I think Arjays would have been easier. Definetly more fun. I thnk the are vinyl ester based. The Arjays has Ceramic in it and the Sea Cast uses chopped strands. It would definetly be interesting to see someone do it.

I plane on laminating for sure, but I am not going to use the u shaped design that came from the factory. I still might change my mind, but for now that is what I am going to do. I solved the ski locker delima though. I just added a little piece pf wood there and closed it off. I am just going to drill a hole and 3M 5200 a drain in it.

Hope I am not being anoying. I haven't gotten FB either way. On your gel coat, have you considered a Dump Gun. These are made for Gel Coat. They have one for sale at US composites for $119.00. It comes with a #6 nozzle but others are available at low cost. You can also order 25 paper disposable cups for $12.00. If the Gelcoats hardens in the cup, just through out the fifty cent paper cup and put in a new one. It requires 5.8 CFM at 80 PSI (link below).

You can get a 5 gallon of Gel Coat for approx $150.00 from composites one. This is high quality gel coat. I have talked with the engineers and boat manufactures that speak very highly of the Cook Composite Gel Coat. I had people doubt me that it can be purchased for that, but check for your self...no lie. Polycore 944 is the one that I'd use. They also have an additive to help thin the Gel Coat for spraying. They call it a Patch Aid. It's not just acetone and they recomend against thinning Gelcoat with acetone. I checked the website and they have locations in TX.

Good Luck.

I have not tried a dump gun but was advised against it. I was told it is for putting gel onto a smooth mold not laying out smooth gel coat. I have used a 2.5 tip to shoot gell and it needed much more. Ebay also has a 4.0 That I was going to try. Pressure pot might get away with a 2.0.

Jay,

Great job on the rebuild. I have been following your thread closely over the last few months. I have to say that the videos you have posted here are extremely informative. They are the perfect visual counterpart to the wealth of textual information supplied by your thread and other threads on the forum. I can't wait to see the finished product. I'm sure it will turn out great!

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I have never used the dump gun either, but I do have experience spraying high build primers. the comment about a dump gun working better on a mold is probably correct. The Dump gun is probably the best way to get a lot of unthined Gel Coat on a surface relitvely quickly with a small amount of orange peel (some youtubes out there of this). Getting Gel coat to flow and flatten out like paint is very difficult from what I have seen. If your mixing non skid with the Gel Coat, would it really matter if the gel coat had a little orange peel?

A pressure pot with a large nozzle gun thined with patchaid would work best but that's several hundred dollars in Devillbiss or Binks. I have seen some knock off brands (pressure pot and gun) for under $100.00 but I am not sure how well they would work?

Jay,

The ski locker floor in my Sea Ray had a lip facing down on the end of it and it was all glassed in. This way, nothing can get under the floor, including water. Thanks, Steven
