Real nice work Jay. I've just gone through the whole thread over the last two days. Can't wait to see more!

Congratulations on the sell.

With the trouble you?re having with the glue, I?m having second thoughts about gluing any carpet down. What are you going to do? Are you going to glue more down later?

Personally, I think the carpet is the main reason all of these older boasts are rotted out so bad. All the carpet is good for is holding water and keeping everything wet. There is no way I would ever put carpet back in a boat. Thanks, Steven

No Carpet for me at all. I am going to gel coat everything and then use removable carpet.

I used 3m super 90 to glue mine in works great and doesn't leave the giant mess carpet glue does.

I was going to carpet the sides and cuddy of my boat. They were sprayed with a chopper gun and are pretty rough. To fill and sand all of those areas would take a lot more time & work than I'm willing to swollow at this point. The areas that show are at the side panel cutouts for drink holders and about 4"-6" along the bottom below the side panels. Is yours the same? If so, do you plan to make it smooth? I'm just fishing for ideas.

Clock,

It seems like we have similar boats. I decided to carpet the sides under the panels outside the cabin and reinforce, fair and gelcoat the hull sides inside the cabin, deck and seat platforms. In the outside area, I am not worried about the carpet holding moisture. The gravity will take care of draining and the sun will take care of the rest. The carpet will also provide some sound damping effect and hind the connection line between the cap and the hull. Good luck with your project.

I am leaving the carpeted side with the cup holders. The cupholder shelf provides a perfect cut off point to start the gelcoat. That way the gel will go up about a foot on the hull, and right to that shelf.

So carpet on the side using 3M spray adhesive (77 or 90) is the normal way to go... Sorry Jay, I didn't intend to hyjack.

Jay,

How you planning on applying the Gelcoat. FYI I just bought a new HVLP gun on Ebay for $45 bucks that'll shoot Gelcoat. GREAT GUN!!! It's got a 2.5 mm tip

I was thinking of rolling before I saw that gun. The only problem is over spray. I would have to spend days wrapping that boat, my fence and my neighbors house.

No problem. Find a goo breaking point and that is where I would stop the Carpet. My shelf just provided a good breaking point.

OVERSPRAY?? Dude its HVLP there is VERY little overspray. and since it's gelcoat and thick and you're shooting down at the floor with DEEP hull sides, There won't be ANY! Check out what DozerII has to say about shooting his Tin Boat

I have shot with a bunch of HVLP, but it has been a while so I could not remember. Your right though. I just might have to dig out my spray guns.

Jay, what is your plan of attack on the gelcoat? I know that is jumping ahead, but I remember what a hard time skibum had with it setting up in the gun. That is for sure the best finish, just looks like a nightmare to get it on.

HF has the Plastic Throw Away Quart HVLP cups now. Have your acetone ready and when it starts to gel pour some in and clean the gun. Unscrew the cup and throw it away.

Hey wood, HVLP, is that high velocity low pressure, so it would work with a 5gal 1.5 hp air compressor, you think?

High Volume Low Pressure, and NO they require a LOT of CFM so you need a BIG Compressor. I have a 60 Gallon 5hp.

A LPHV or gravity fed spray gun will work fine on 5 CFM or 150 LPM
They require much less air then the pickup tube type (where the pot is below the gun)
Look for a spray putty gun as you will be able to spray gelcoat without the need to thin out.
You will see very little overspray with spraying neat gelcoat.

I dug out my Devilbiss HVLP gun and it has a 1.8 tip on it. What should I get?
