Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I'd run a small bead of PL on the ouside of em to hold em in place and call it good

I think that's exactly what I'm going to do, and call it done.

Make sure you check out my new twitter link at the bottom of this page. I will be putting mundane updates there. I'm not sure how much I'll use it yet but it's a start.

Jay,

Being the anal SOB that I am, I'd be paranoid about the cardboard gunk clogging up the drains.

Wouldn't some sort of narrow and removable spacer between the fore and aft stringers and the foam during your pour be ideal? It'd provide a gap for the water and maybe even some air to breathe if necessary:

I dunno, it's just a thought...

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Jay,
I am no expert. I would tend to agree with vandentr. I would only use half of a tube. Less cardboard less chance of a clog. I would try to use the thinest cardboard tube I could find. I would also try to pour just enough foam to cover the tubes to hold them in place. Let that cure and then pour the rest. This should help keep the tubes from crushing on the final pour. I would think the foam will stick to itself.
Another way would be drill a 1" to 1 1/2" hole in the bulk heads. Same size as the OD of the pvc. Use a hole saw and save the cutout peice. Cut a peice of pvc just a little longer than the distance between the bulk heads. You can grease the pvc really well and put it in the holes in the bulk head. At this point pour enough foam to cover the pvc. Use as much foam as you think nessary to prevent the opening from crushing when you pour your final foam. You can pull the pvc after the first layer of foam is poured. Start aft and work to the bow. Then use your PL or 3M 5200 to seal the wood cutout back in place. Do this to all the space's one at a time. On your last one use the tube. Your limber holes will still drain to the center and your Bulk Head will be sealed.
Just another thought.
Glad to hear your mother is doing better. Our prayers for her and your family are still with us.

Thinking about it, there is a much easier solution, dont use cardboard, buy a roll of that black garden hose thats made out of tires and designed to slowly leak when you turn the water on, just lay that down and run the end right through the hole, technically it should work in revers and allow the water to pass through and out. The material wont break off or turn to mush and no worry of clogging all that hard work.

Hey Merlin696.
That would probally work until the foam sealed the hose as it cures. Just a thought. I don't know.

I thought about that, but the stuff is just porous enough that I don?t think the foam would seal it shut. It may cover it but I think in the long run to create something that?s going to allow water to flow in some kind of channel without risking mildew and damage since it cant really rot. Got me though I havnt worked with the foam before so I cant honestly say I know what will happen.

I was looking at the stringers of my boat today, and I think this may or may not work. I think the fiberglass left over Pokey things that are going to hurt the balloons before you can even put the foam in. I guess if you send it it really good beforehand, you might have a shot. However the balloon idea is the best yet.

What is the possibility of using foam tubes to run for the water channel?AKA swim tubes

How about some PVC pipe ripped in half on the table saw and lay that against the stringer and hull cut side down to create a channel....maybe even put a bunch of short pieces of cotton rope in holes drilled along it's edge against the hull to act as wicks.... You could tab it in with some csm or mat so the foam won't seep in under it.... just a thought :)

Jay,
I'm very curious to see how it turns out. When I did my foam pour it was crazy. It is amazing how that stuff just wanted to go *everywhere*. Your cardboard idea is great, I'd go with a 1/2 tub and make sure it's sealed up to the stringer/hull joint. Otherwise you might find the foam wanting to go around the cardboard and then it's game over. I hope that doesn't happen because then you'd have cardboard (e.g., paper) embedded in your foam; not good. If you pour the foam before you put your decking on you can remove the new foam and try again. When I poured my foam our decking was already screwed in so no do-overs for me, but the foam filled all the voids really well.

You should definitely go with your idea, but make sure the cardboard tube will not let foam underneath it. It's almost like pouring milk before it starts expanding. My point is, once you pour that stuff it's really hard to control.

Having just worked with it once, I must say it is really amazing stuff. The moment you mix, the clock starts ticking and it's a rush to get it in. You'll definitely want to recruit a camera-person to let your loyal followers see that stuff in action. My wife and I were amazed to see how it works.

Good luck, I really look forward to seeing how it turns out!

PS: I also like your idea of the threaded weep holes so that you can prevent bilge from going underneath the decking, or let air through when in storage mode.

Nick

I thought about the PVC too, but the last thing you want to is have PVC pipes vibrating in the floor when Jay hits the throttle on that 454. It might sound like those dorks who put big bass speakers in the trunk of their Dodge Neon and all you hear is the freakin' license plate rattling (argh). Oh wait, maybe we only have those folks in New Mexico.

Also, I was sold on the balloon idea. (just rob a clown, they probably have a few spares) But keep in mind that the foam tends to heat up when it's undergoing the chemical reaction. If it didn't pop from the fiberglass frays, it might melt and pop.

So far my vote is with the sacrificial cardboard tube.

Hence why I said to tab it to the hull.....if it's glassed in it shouldn't vibrate.

Just like you, i was put into the same boat. I too bought a boat that was suppost to be lake ready and to my suprise i now have the top pulled off of my boat replacing all stringers and transom as well. But i must say after first viewing your first couple videos on Youtube, you put the spark under my butt and now i can say this boat is better then it was first built. I bought all of my materials from uscomposites.com. They have a great price on 2lbs foam kits. In your last video you said something about using rubber brush on paint used for tile work to coat the inside of the boat. I used rubberized under coating that you can buy at your local auto parts store. $4.00 a can and it worked just as good for less the price. I hope this helps with your build.

one thing is for sure Jay, Nick is right about the foam....make sure you have your act together when pouring it, I'm sure you will....but that stuff is like a volcano 30 seconds after you mix it!

Uscomposites sales a 2lbs foam kit that expands at a lower speed. When i pured my boat i mixed 12oz of each part at a time and mixed it for 30 sec and had lots of time before it started to expand. But it all depends on the temp as well.

I had to put that foam in my last boat, and you are right, the stuff goes everywhere. I plan on doing it with a mock deck wrapped in plastic a mold release. I also did some reading and it looks like I need to do some stiffer foam, and so I think I will go with the 4lb foam instead of the 2lb. It will make sure everything is nice and stiff.

Clock watcher did the same thing, and I still might go with that idea vs the cardboard. The main thing I am trying to do is create a channel along the lower corner to allow water to run out. I still want the foam to touch most of the stringers for the strength and sound deadening.

NO pun intended , RIGHT:D

BUT i was thinking of doing the same thing , once i got my hull all repaired from the inside. A roller had pushed into the underside, because it was adjusted wrong at some point in time.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I was trying to think of where I can buy those, thanks for the lead. I actually want them to be sacrificial, and wouldn't the tabbing of the fiberglass cause them to be permanent? I guess I want them to act like a French drain, and allow water to penetrate through them to the channels along the bottom. If I drill holes in them though just get plugged with the foam.

ok, i am seeing something here, if you were to use the foam tubes and take fiberglass or nylon rope. Take and run the from side to side making a path for the water evacuate. ( I was gonna say get out , LOL) Well just brain storming, as i was just pulling wet stinkin foam from under my deck.
