I'm glad to hear she is improving, but sorry to hear what she is going through. Hang in there, maybe the boat will help you relax some.

I am hoping the boat gives me a little bit of therapy. I just wish I could actually be on the lake for some therapy:)

Jay. I am going to do a test withe the balloons but my idea is too do a small pour on the balloons to encase them then I could stick a piece of wire down too pop them also protect them from the pressure

I was looking at the stringers of my boat today, and I think this may or may not work. I think the fiberglass left over Pokey things that are going to hurt the balloons before you can even put the foam in. I guess if you send it it really good beforehand, you might have a shot. However the balloon idea is the best yet.

Jay,
First of all let me say I'm keeping the best thoughts for your Mother. I pray this weekend is enjoyable for her, some how, some way...

I haven't replied to any portion of your thread yet but you just won yet another huge fan. When I saw your first video, I recalled the day I realized we bought a rotten boat at high price. We got ripped off bad, first time boat owners. I just didn't know what to do. And then I found the iboats forums. Well, the rest is history and we have what I like to call a brand new '88 Glastron SSV-199 (see my sig for the web blog). I got caught up on your Sea Ray and Glastron threads over the last couple days and I must say, you are doing things right. There are a couple things I wish I had done a bit differently on my boat and you have demonstrated those well. We ended up using Epoxy type resin for everything which was great but I think my next project we'll look at the Poly. We live in New Mexico and there ain't anything for boat rebuild suppliers around here so I ended up buying all our fiberglassing supplies from US Composites. They were good to me, I'd go back to them again if the need arises. Anyway it was a huge delay to get supplies, about a week for the UPS Ground shipping. We ended up using whole wheat flour (yes the kind you make food with) along with the 1/4" milled fiber for our fillet mixture. Funny thing is with the brownish color of the wheat flour it actually looked like peanut butter. It worked great, I'm not sure where I got the idea for using the whole wheat flour but we were able to get it locally and I believe I got that advice from somewhere on the iboats forum.

Well this post is quickly turning into a novel, don't want to hold you up with my gibberish but I just had to say I fell in love with your Sea Ray after you showed the gorgeous gelcoat in your first video. You're going to have a beauty when she's done. Keep it up Brother. The videos are awesome!

Cheers,
Nick

SWEET, I have another follower! I just read through your whole blog on your glastron, and I love it. You do very nice work, and I think that boat is gorgeous.

Lay down a lay of duct tape or similar before the balloon, the plus side to this is when the boat starts to fall apart completely you will know the the part with the duct tape on it will still be holding strong

Man that is hilarious. I've been doing a lot of thinking on this issue, I think I've got it pretty good idea what I want to do. The way that I did my bulkhead configuration, it will allow me to do limber holes into the center portion of the boat. Therefore I can put in the cardboard tubes cut in half in each compartment, and they will cover the limber holes when I pour the foam. they should be strong enough to withstand the pressure of the foam. Then if any water gets into that compartment it will simply rot out the cardboard, and allow the water to come out of the limber hole. Basically it is a modified balloon idea. I will elaborate in a video.

I managed to get a little bit done on the boat today, but not much. I managed to get all the fillets in the boat, and I started sanding the stringers to give them bite for the fiberglass. I ran out of cabosil with one Stringer or left to go, and I had to resorted to using standard kitchen flour. I like the way that it mixed up, but when it dried it was very rough. The peanut butter that I used with cabosil cured nice and smooth, and was very shiny. I'm not sure what that means about adhesion to fiberglass, but I would think the rougher of the two would be better. I did some searching on the Internet before I did this, and it said it was good in a pinch. Has anyone else use this?

Yes, we used whole wheat flour and milled fiber for all of our fillets. It was easy to glass over it too. You're good to go.

I really like that idea you have explained above, can't wait to see it in HD. LOL :D

I'm another one of your stalkers Jay, along with everyone else, i wish the best on your mom's recovery. Thanks for all your education and tips, it's inspiring me to do the same job. I never would've thought it'd be something i could accomplish without actually watching you and the other members tackle it head on. Thanks for your time invested in this.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers guys, it really means a lot. She's actually improved a little bit today also. I just hope we can keep this peak in this roller coaster. It seems that every time were up, things go back down again. So please keep praying guys.

I didn't get a whole lot done about this weekend, but at least all the fillets are done, and I'm ready to start fiberglassing. The video doesn't go over a whole lot, but I do go over my foam plan in extensive detail. I even illustrated it for you.

Said to me what you think about my plan on the foam. I think it's pretty darn good idea, and it uses a little bit of everybody's ideas from here.

He did show us his phone and we know he is an iphone user. I wonder when he will add three layers of 1708 to that otterbox cover and make it waterproof? :)

Jay you can get cardboard tubes from Uline. They have about every size you can think of. You could tab in the tubes with glass. I was amazed at how tuff the tubes are once you have them glassed. They worked great to stiffen up my bow.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I was trying to think of where I can buy those, thanks for the lead. I actually want them to be sacrificial, and wouldn't the tabbing of the fiberglass cause them to be permanent? I guess I want them to act like a French drain, and allow water to penetrate through them to the channels along the bottom. If I drill holes in them though just get plugged with the foam.
