Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Your schedule sounds good an a good bit stronger than what was in there from the factory. I can't really compare it to what I used, but questions would be:

1. What size were the stringers you removed? Wise man says keep it the same or larger.
2. Are there any issues using poly on birch? I don't know. Anyone?

If you order a little extra 1708 you can always add another layer if it doesn't seem strong enough for comfort. Screws through the floor bothers me, but I hear it's necessary with poly. Maybe add some 1x2 cleats on both sides of the stringer tops to increase the bonding surface?

I was going to put cleats on the stringers for sure. That way I am screwing into the cleat, and not the stringer.

Anyone know about birch?

I follow this thread in awe.....Amazed at your resolve and ability to take on monumental tasks without hesitation.....Good job! Most people would have cut their losses and passed the buck onto another unsuspecting individual.

Let me know when you wanna sell that boat! I may be interested once she is finished...:)

birch ply is ok but its no better than a standard cabinet grade pine or fir ply, just prettier and costs $10 a sheet more.

Just got caught up with the videos this morning. How the heck did this boat get THAT rotted all the way forward! Crazy. You're doing a great job.

Well I think I have enough stuff you get started. I spent all week tracking down all the supplies, and I went and picked up all the wood this morning. The only thing I got done today was the template for the transom, and then tomorrow I will get the wood cut for it.

I am looking forward to this part.

Jay,

We're all looking forward to this part! You're rebuild process is fascinating to watch and in all honesty I haven't seen any better video logs on this forum before. No doubt you're stressed out, but we're all benefitting from your misfortune(s). Can't wait to see the next steps. Good luck!

Ok, I am a little behind on Video production. I have lots of tape, and I am trying to get it edited and up on the web. Here is one from the weekend.

How I make the template for the transom. Don't worry, I got a lot done this weekend, and i will be updating alot.

Nice job Jay, I also used the pink stuff to mock up any area that I needed to cut odd shapes to fit on my Bayliner. Great techinque, cheap & forgiving.

Looking forward to more videos!

Nice work on the template Jay. I used big sheets of cardboard, but it looks like the pink stuff is working great for you. Glad to see it starting to come back together!

Great job on your boat!

I watched your last rebuild on the Glastron and find myself checking your current thread everyday in hopes of new pics of video updates!

I took the lazy mans way out in January and had my floor rebuilt and carpeted. Just not enough time with a 1 yr and 3 yr old to do what you are doing! I am living vicariously through you!

Love it! Keep up the great work!

Jay.....somewhere deep down it appears that you enjoy this stuff.....AND you are pretty darn good at it. While this boat wasn't meant to be a project when you bought it - I wouldn't be surprised to see you rebuilding another boat in the future.......you have a talent!
