jay

not sure how much space you have in the key hole to use another all thread and 2x4...but if there is room i think i devised a way you can clamp the outer wings as u call them. take a small piece of 2x4 maybe 6" long and attach it to the 2x4 that runs the width of the transom on the inside of the boat. its almost like adding feet to the 2x4 of coarse when you attach it all the pressure will be asserted over the 6" feet on each wing. the only thing i forgot to add in my picture was the 2x4 that will be used on the outside of the transom (outside the boat where the gimbal housing mounts up.)
I think this would work better than bags of concrete. or you can use both. just thought i would try to help

I am thinking along those lines as well but I would drill the holes in your 2x4 through the width of the board instead of the narrow side of the board. it will take longer all thread(4"+4"+transom thickness+an inch or two for washers and nuts) but it will give you better clamping power at the ends because the board is less likely to flex, plus you can fit more 2x's in there than you can 4x's. 4+4+4+4=16" or 2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2=16 (I know 2x4's are 1 1/2x31/2 but was afraid i was being a little unclear) Then you can use scrap ply to make up the difference in thickness between the trannsom and the "wings" I would draw you a picture but frankly I was sapost (yes that is TEXACAN) to be home a half hour ago.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

When I start doing the stringers, I think I might so that. Although the tarps at my home depot are not all that cheap.

Ok now for a little update. Yesterday I was at work on a ladder, and took a bad fall. When I landed I messed up my ankle really bad, and the drill bit on the drill I was holding stabbed into my forearm about 4 inches. I could hardly move my hand yesterday, but the xrays do not show and tendon or bone damage.

People who know me well, know I will not stay down for long. I cannot stand sitting around!!!!

Ok two things as for the tarp. Harbor freight!!!!!! there is one in north richalnd hills.
Second
I feel your pain I was working on a ladder once and had my nail gun hanging from my apron (with the trigger wired back) I know I diserved it. I took a step up the ladder and bam the nailer deposited a 4" nail righ into my thigh. at that point I was stuck because the nail penetrated the bone and I could not go up or down the ladder with only on leg working. My crew has to basically carry me off the ladder. Having the nail removed was not pleasant either. They doctor actually used a nail puller. Never the less Get Better.

And the next time this happens your fired before you hit the ground!!

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Thanks guys for the well wishes. I sat on the couch all day and watched three seasons of Californication, and took it easy. I have to say I feel WAAAAAY better. I can actually type and use my left hand with very little pain, and my ankle is usable now. I still have to keep in in the brace, but I really am not limping any more. The people that saw what my ankle and arm looked like yesterday cannot believe I have use of the injured areas. I think the Lord above wants my to finish the boat... LOL!!! I will see how I feel in the morning, but I think I am going to try and glue in the transom tomorrow.

P.S. Thank goodness for Health insurance. Being self employed I have to pay for a private policy, and it is expensive, but this little doctors visit will make it worth while.

I love watching your videos you post up, even with being an aluminium guy it is still good to see how to do things. You do great work! Really sorry to hear about your fall, and hope you are back up and moving around again quickly (which it already sounds like you are a bit). Feel better man!

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Jay get well soon, be careful ...
Transom pour is easy period. I did mine in my driveway using Arjay three years ago..Solid as a rock to this day ...
First make a two templates of the current cutout one from the inside and one outside..be sure to cut it exactly to the bottom of the Boat and mark all reference points you will use this to cut out a new hole after the pour.
Cover the hole with plywood from the outside use a thick plastic and apply pva on it also if it does not release clean you can grind it down with a sander.
The skin for the inside use a 3/4" or 1/2" Owens Corning PINK Extruded Polystyrene Foam Insulation (Home Depot) cut out a full template of the transom.
On one side of the template use the strongest cloth and resin and laminate it completely, flip her over drill holes into the foam 1/2 apart and wet it really good filling up the holes then laminate it like the other side.
You now have a skin that will never rot and strong as a hell for your pour, Secure it in place and you must seal every single hole for the pour, if the SeaCast is anything like my Arjay it will flow or seep out trust me. Evidence is still in my driveway to this day.
Also note the chemical reaction when this product sets up it flashes up to 200 degrees per Arjay my transom was very very hot during the first hour.
After curing use the template and cut out a new hole ...
Mark the outside and inside , drill a hole 1/2" from the lines and use a jig or saw and slowly and carefully cut out the hole, remember this stuff files and grinds like wood so cut small and file to perfection...
Some pictures of my project ...and completed transom ..I personally like Arjay it flows like butter ....Remember the SeaCast will not its much thicker and has fiber strands in it ...
Get well soon..

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Well I really did not get much done at all today. My ankle was really stiff this morning so I took it easy until about noon, and then the rain came. I basically went outside uncovered the boat, tried to get in and my ankle told me NOOOOOO. So I recovered the boat and came back inside to read the forums again.

I might have a little change in planning here. I was planning on using PL to glue in the transom, but after test fitting the transom several times, I found that I have alot of voids that would take hours and hours to level out. After reading and posting another thread asking for opinion, I think I am going to glue it in with Peanut Butter. Plus it will allow me to even out where the hull is not the same thickness. Now the problem is that you are under a time crunch when you do this, so I need to have everything ready to go when it is time for clampage. I will mix it really slow so that I have time to work before it starts to harden.

The other thing I have been rethinking is stringer thickness. Stock was 1/2", but I was thinking about going up to 3/4". I wonder what that will do to weight. It sure would make wrapping the stringers easier.

Jay,

I know you are probably going stir crazy sitting in the house and not outside working on your boat, but I think you made the correct decision on letting your anke heal. The last thing you want to do is hurt it climbing in and out of the boat. As for us, we may have withdrawl for not having our daily "friscoboater" fix, but I think we will get over it. You should be ready to hit it full speed next weekend. We'll just have to wait. Take care, Steven

I agree and disagree with 69rrvert,yes its a very good idea to let your ankle heal but I would not rush it either, your going to have a remarkable recovery to get into your boat next weekend on that ankle, when you reach our age we just don't heal like we used to and the ankle is just a tough joint that takes a long time to heal but you take it easy Jay theres no reason to rush this your boats not going anywhere and we will survive just fine

You get better

Rest your ankle as long as you can. You need to be on your A-Game when fitting the new transom and be able to jump in and out of the boat quickly if needed. (ask me how I know  )
In fact, take next weekend off from building and take your Glastron out for the day.

Your doing good work, keep it up... when you can

Jay,

The APA says this about plywood weight.

3 pounds per square foot per inch of thickness according to APA Plywood Design Specification.

So 1 square foot of 1/4inch plywood should weight approx. 3/4 of a lb. Sooooooooooooo. 8" stringer @ 19' = 9.5 lbs. in additional weight. Hope this helps with your calculations.

+1 to this! You owe yourself a day of fun on the lake with "light ankle duty."
