Wow Jay! I've been following this thread for a couple of weeks now. Just saw the last video you posted. It looks like you're making lots of progress!

If you must use foam I would line the areas where the foam is going with plastic, pour the foam and when it is dry and cured, pop the foam plugs out and cut channels in them to drain holes. If using closed cell foam just seal up the channels. If the foam is a structural part of the boat I would just used closed cell foam, seal up the compartments, fill with foam and then seal it up real well making the compartments water proof. This should work fine. If you are doing snap in carpet, and you keep the boat dry, you should have no problems either way. Looking good though.

good work jay,
lots of progress. That weather killed all of us the last couple weeks. sunshine here for a week. after thinking about drainage. I've personally decided to use 1/2" cotton rope laid against the stringers and hull. i messed around with 2lb pour foam. the foam as stated in the last post really makes a strong bond with the rope. i coated the rope with some petroleum jelly(Vaseline) the rope still stuck alittle but had much better release than no coating. i might try a spare piece of poly line (old tube tow rope that got ate by the prop last year). and see if it bonds to that.

Superpop i like your method...ill also consider that if the rope trick doesn't work.

Foam sucks.. sucks to remove, sucks to put back in, but it's a necessary evil

Now, I'm OLD and NO expert but I got to thinkin, and that IS dangerous but... could you use cardboard strips laid out on the hull and then pour the foam over them. If water gets to the card board and saturates it, it will deteriorate and allow the water to flow and eventually it will disintegrate creating a void. Maybe maybe not. Is there some other biodegradeable material that would do the same thing. Again I was just thinking and that IS dangerous.

On December 24, 2010, the famous iboats.com forum member oops! posted in his epic thread, now a Sticky, that he has solved the foam/water/rot problem BUT did not have time to post it because of his work schedule. Maybe you could PM him and find out some details even if he does not have any pictures yet. Good luck!

If I was doing this I would use sea cast but make a mold and pour a 1 3/4 thick sea cast plank, then cut it out to fit and install
it like you would a plywood transom, it works great and will never rot. Your doing a great job, I hope I never have to do this.

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

Thanks for the ideas guys. I think if I can get the compartments sealed up enough, I will be good to go. The main thing I have to do is make sure the deck is sealed to the stringers around the ski locker area. Water will tend to run over the lip of the locker and seep into the secondary compartments. I will have to put a bead of PL there once I get the deck installed.

I tried to PM oops but his box is full. Can someone flag him down for me?

Here are some more questions.

1. I found 1/2" birch hardwood plywood at HD. It is void free, and looks really nice. Is that ok to use for the stringers?
2. I was planning on tabbing in with CSM just to hold the stringers and then put two layers of 1708 on the stringers, and 3 layers in the bilge area. Is this enough?
4. I used 24 oz roven on my transom last time, but I was planning on waterproofing with CSM and then two layers of 1708 to skin it. Good?
5. When waterproofing the stringers, bulkheads, and transom, should I use a 6 oz cloth or just stick with csm?
6. What is the best practice for securing the deck? SS screws?

I really like the way 1708 tends to really lie down nice, and i am willing to pay the extra money for it.

Here is the final video for the weekend

When you pour Seacast, you want it to adhere to the fiberglass in the boat...it all joins & becomes 1 solid unit. You can't make it on the garage floor and then glue it in. Its meant to be poured in place.

If you could, they'd sell it in 4x8 sheets and we'd all be doing it!

Its in my boat, and its great stuff.

I think you're on the right track Jay. If you seal the wood up, like I know you will, nothing wrong with another plywood transom.

If your still having carpet glue removal issues, I've had good luck with using a block of dry ice and freezing it hard. Sometimes it will just pop off when it's frozen or it will grind off.

Re:"I need to get with you and talk about the mods I want to do. I want to do a programmer, but I am going to wait a while and make sure nothing goes wrong under warranty."

Jay,
Yes, I have the "Programmer" too, and if you use Banks it's called a "Six-Gun" diesel tuner and it is controlled by a Microsoft compatible, dashboard mounted, 5"(diag) touch-screen computer marvel they call "iQ". The "iQ" can also be used for GPS navigation, Entertainment (Music videos, Movies etc.), Games, in addition to its graphic display, and record keeping of any testing or sporting you may allow your inner kid to perform. You know , such childish things like 0-60mph times and 1/4 or 1/8 mile rear tire rubber burns, that we don't tell our wifes about. How'd you like to boost your horsepower to almost 500hp, and your pulling torque to close to 800lb-ft, and 0-60 in just over 6 secs. I know, my wifes Corvette will do it in 4, but 6 for a big heavy truck... And if you are anything like the overgrown Teenager I am, at 70, you drive around looking for Fords or Dodges to give a little "Smokin" to. I'm telling you, you can't help but to develop an attitude.
Hey, I must sound as if I'm a Banks salesman, which definitely I am NOT, but when you get all that power under the hood, you know how it can increase your bravado, in a way that only men can understand. So, if you wanna' talk about it some time down the road, I'd be glad to share my experiences (thrills and spills) with you. In the meantime I'm going to post a few pictures from MY "resto" job of a '73 I/O 140 hp mercruiser Silverline 17' Comoro Tri-hull, which is at about at the same stage as your job, but I have the luxury of being able to fit my boat and trailer in to my garage, just barely though, with abt. 1/8th of an inch clearance btwn. underside of garage door and boat's top of windshield. And that is with the trailer hitch tongue dragging on the driveway. I'll get the pix up here as soon as I take them and figure out how to do it. I am relatively new to this forum, but I have to say I have learned a lot from your as well as others posts, so I am really thankful for all the knowledge I have gained from reading I have done here on iBoat.
So a great big thanks to all of you iboaters out there.
Fondly, UW

Re: Here I go again!! 1995 Sea Ray 220 Signature Deck and Stringer Restoration

I did it in my boat, worked great, when I made the plank up it was first a layer of roaving, then sea cast, then roaving, I wet out
the cloth first, then when it started to set poored in sea cast, then wet out the other layer cloth and put that on top and then a flat
sheet with mold release as the bottom was. Then installed like plywood would be. Worked great and I didn't have to take off the deck.

Awesome, Thanks.

Here is a questions for you guys. Should I bump up to 3/4 inch ply for the stringers? Too much?

Forgot to mention, MEK is a very strong chemical, keep it off your vinyl as it will eat through it pretty good. Also need to wear good gloves and probably your respirator.

MEK, stay away. Very toxic stuff. Not worth the exposure for some old glue. Dry ice sounds like a great idea.
Grinding fiberglass is so uncool.

Jay, On the foam, Bob did a lot of studies on it....apparently he works with foam injection. Anyhow at the end of the day, foam that was poured and didn't have the "the skin broken" didn't absorb water. Foam that had part of it "knocked off, ground off or broken did". So I would try to stick will putting the foam in areas where it won't be disturbed and the skin won't be ruptured....easier said than done! I poured my whole deck and sealed it up...so far so good. I used 4 layers of 2 oz cms on my stringer, no problems after a season. Also, system three's 6-ten works great for gluing down the deck around the perimeter....or anything else for that matter, great stuff!
