Re: Deck coating / Turned complete restore
If the outside of the tank is not badly corroded you can use Dawn Dish soap and boiling water to clean the inside. Fill it 1/2 full with boiling water and 1/2 cup of Dawn. Slosh it around for 10-15 minutes then let it set and repeat this every 15 minutes for a couple of hours. Dump it out then get a length of chain and put it in the tank. Then Slosh the chain around inside the tank for quite a while as well to loosen all the Carp that's inside. Pour in a couple more gallons of boiling water and Dawn and clean it up again. Then treat the inside with the POR-15 Gas Tank treatment and then Paint the outside with the Por-15 Paint. The Tank will be like new and last for Decades. That's my story and I'm stickin to it. IF the tank is heavily Pitted with corrosion...Replace it!!! IMHO below deck tanks should be Aluminum, Strapped in place with Nylon straps and NOT foamed in. That's just MY OPINION. I KNOW what others think and What the USCG and other research posted on this forum says. I've read it as well as SEEN what foamed in tanks look like when they have been removed and what the water has done to them. If an aluminum tank is left to BREATHE and NOT encapsulated in foam to SWEAT and stand in Water and you coat it aluminum with a protective coating like POR-15 then IMHO you will go a long way to avoid corrosion problems for the long term. Again Just an Old Dumb Okie's Opinion That's NEVER owned a Boat with a Below Deck Tank so What do I KNOW. Just PURE Speculation on my part based on Logic and Research. Worth everything you paid for it!!!!
