Re: Deck coating / Turned complete restore

Well now that you have some High Speed Water Inlets in the hull, You're ready to start getting this boat back on the water. Don't sweat the cuts, Eazy Smeazy to repair. Visualize in your head where New Glass will be layed onto the hull. If those areas are ground down to fresh Pink Glass then I'd say you're ready to start putting her back together.

Well teamster you'll have to come back. I have lived here all my life only been on lake a handful of times

Thanks wood for the encouraging words I have seen a list of materials for a 16" boat going around the forum you think that's a good start for me

Well after reading woods "Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms" for the hundredth time I realized I am not done grinding for the deck. Seems like I missed that tabbing up the gunwales you go up about 10 inches. I'm only up 6-8 thats what happens when you rush thru things haha

Question or you guys I am finishing my grinding on the gunwales up about 10" so I can tab in my deck. I know I need to get to fresh pink fiberglass. My Question is my gunwales seem to be made of woven glass so there is some old gelcoat im assuming hear and there deep in the woven. Do I have to get all of it out

Acetone and a Wire brush to clean he recessed areas of the WR. As long as the Gelcoat is scuffed and clean, since it's Poly based, the New Resin/Glass will stick to it. Get the old resin flat and smooth to about 60 grit so the new stuff can "Bite" into it.

OK hopefully grinding is finally done have to wait and see when dust settles. As you can see mine is a center console that is not a tub my gunwales are only as thick as the fiber glass that had a ugly finish on . (which is what started all this) Well thru the grinding process there is a lot of dips and valleys. Can I spread fairing compound all over the gunwales and then sand that flat or am I suppose to try and straiten out the fiberglass it self

Yep you can make your own fairing material with resin and glass bubbles and fill the gouges and dips. It'll sand real easy.

I was wondering being as how I am running the fiberglass up 10" would it make sense to run a layer all the way up to make up for all the grinding?

These are profiles of the board the deck rest on over the chine. These are tabbed in but not glued of any kind directly to the hull. The tabbing it loose from the wood and wood is not rotted should I cut out the tabbing re tab existing wood or replace the wood or just leave it alone deck and fill with foam?

I'd re-Tab em for sure. Grind off any loose spots and then one layer of 1708 should do the trick. Grinding looks GREAT!!!

So I removed the deck support boards that were on the sides above the chine. These were not attached to the hull except tabbed on one side should I reattach the same way or should I pb them in then tab them

Yup, pretty much!!!! With as much foam as is going into your boat, they're not as critical as stringers, and are more "Deck Supports" as you say, but it's still prolly better to have em secured to the hull as best a possible.

Like Momma says..."If it's worth doin, it's worth doin Right!"
