A few projects here on the forum have done it. I think the concensus is they are hard to do, expensive, and generally not worth the effort when you consider that properly done wood stringers will last 40+ years with proper care and maintenance.

Depending on the exact "other than wood" product used, most don't offer the same strength as plywood, so you need to increase the amount of glass used to cover it. Things like foam and some honeycombs don't add much strength, they are just a shape to glass over, so you are just using the core as a shape and the glass does all the work.

If you rely on the wood core for added strength then you need to make sure it doesn't rot away, if you treat it like foam and rely on the glass for all the strength, then the wood becomes more of just a shape to glass over, if it rots away it's not such a big deal.

OK my new ? I have a forced air furnace in my garage from what I have read poly resin is flammable and epoxy is not. And I realize epoxy is more money is the epoxy that much stronger and if I do go epoxy can I gelcoat my deck over the epoxy.
Also is the poly that flammable will the fumes rise above 4 feet

Epoxy is that much stronger.

No gel coat on epoxy, it won't bond.

Poly resin is very flammable and the vapors can be explosive.

What about the other resin I think vynle or something like that can you gelcoat over that. If you can gelcoat over epoxy what do you use to finish it off

Vinyl Ester is right there with the poly as far as flammability.

Polyester Resins

You finish off an epoxy deck with carpet, marine vinyl (sheet), or an epoxy compatable paint on product (usually contains epoxy too).

If you choose to go the epoxy route, use the 635 fast setting 4:1 mix ratio in cool weather for quicker set and cure times.

Well with a center console I personally think the deck needs to be gelcoat So I guess I will have to figure out a way to do it with out blowing up. I know with gasoline the fumes only go up about 4 feet my furnace is 8 foot off the ground do you know if the fumes from poly rise that high

What a few people do is heat up their work area and materials real good and then turn the heat off until they're finished working and the fumes clear out and then turn the heat back on.

Styrene is the vapor that may be flammable, it's heavier than air and will stay near the floor. Styrene fumes are not as flammable as other types of solvents and polyester resin itself doesn't burn that easily, but it can, so precautions need to be taken. Styrene can be detected by your nose at very low concentrations, so just because you can smell it doesn't mean that the fumes may ignite.

I normally use halogen lights to warm the area when needed, keep them back a ways because they put out a great deal of heat.

I agree^^^ Lights will do the trick. If you can mix the resin inside, use the lamps to heat the substrate then quickly go out and apply. Keep the Glass @ temp for at least 4 hours and prefferably 8-12 if the temps are freezing or lower.

So I gather that its not a good idea to use the poly inside with the heater running

It would take a LOT of fumes building up to make it a hazard, but...any open flame with flammable fumes is ALWAYS something to be concerned with. If you use the lights, lay the glass, crack the garage door about 6" or so then fire back up the heater, I'd say you'd be good to go.

Re: Center console deck repair

You said Forced air heat .. not like your using a propane jet flamethrower heater ..

Where is the intake of the heater ? Inside the house yea ?

I think you will be fine.

There was another thread about the same issues with poly and open flame. I got hammered on that one too :) ..

Yes .. there could be a problem if the fumes were so great .. and you had an open flame in the garage .. Possibly something could happen. But forced air ? I doubt anything could possibly go wrong. ( not like your spraying this stuff out of a chopper gun ).

Its your final choice though ..

YD.

The heater is a hanging forced air so it pulls the air from garage itself I do alot of car repair in there fuel lines fuel pumps in the tank. I am just not sure if these materials are more flamable then gasoline I appreciate the replies I have to make some room in the garage to get the boat in so I can start Does anyone here know I have my car that was completely media blasted and epoxy primed would that be OK outside under a tarp I'm in Cleveland Ohio

Great Thank you jigngrub for doing that I appreciate the info My plan will be to use a small exhaust fan with door open a little and shut furnace off while resin is wet

ondarvr already told us they were heavier than air. He's been in the Resin business for 40 yrs. You can take his posts to the Bank!
