Re: Center console deck repair

A nasty rotten boat with a bad second paint job that's flaking off... may have been painted with latex exterior house paint, those previous owners will do anything for a laugh.

... but you can make her beautiful again.

Re: Center console deck repair

Well I drilled some holes in the stringers and transom although not sopping wet I did find some moister in both areas. the foam arond the fuel tank was mostly dry a little wet in 2 small areas.
So I made the decision to repair all the for mentioned items this is my first attempt at this type of work but i figure any boat within my budget will probably have some rot that will need repair I might as well repair this one
My plan is to separate the top from the bottom so i can do it right I hope someone can give me some pointers on how to achieve this thanks in advance for all replies

I think what he is referring to is the hull will take alot of work to get it back looking right. And money and time.

That being said, I really like the hull design on this boat and have a soft spot in my heart for center consoles.

What is your budget for getting this put back together and floating/running? Thats the first place you need to start to figure out wether it is going to be a worth while project for you and your family.

The hull looks to me that it had either a very thin coat of gelcoating or paint applied incorrectly, probably was an attemp at a restore years ago. The center stringer in the stern to me does not look like it was original but who knows. The bulkheads forward and aft of the fuel tank look a little worse for the wear as well.

Basically if your going to do this thing right, you will cut back the deck in the boat about two inches all the way around and gut the insides and rebuild from the stringers up. Then you will want to restore the gelcoat on the exterior as well. The exterior gelcoat may or may not be restorable, you will have to sand it down to find out. getting to a solid surface with no cracks or paint over it. You can check into "film disks" for this if you go that route. I restored the bottom of my hull that had bottom paint on it with these type disks. Its in my thread.

The gunwale caps look like they had non skid and the decks look the same. But it also looks like they have been sprayed over. That type of non skid tends to crack on very old vessels though anyway. So your probably going to have to address that as well with sanding down and regelcoating or painting.

Thats just a start, then you have rerigging, rewiring, etc. Plus you haven't found out wether the transom is solid yet. I would do that before anything else. If it need replacing, it is a little harder on this boat because it has a splash well and that will have to be removed.

Personally I think you are looking at atleast $8000.00 conservatively to finish this boat correctly.Thats not including electronics. :) Look forward to seeing you build this boat if its what you really want to do. Cheers, Budd

Re: Center console deck repair

Is restoring your boat worth it?... yes, if you do it right it'll be worth it and you'll have a "like new" boat for a fraction of what a new one costs.

Will it cost $8000?... no, a basic restoration won't cost neat that much... it'll cost $8K to bling it out.

Can I find a better hull in my current price range?... no, they'll all be rotten in the price range you bought this boat at.

Your paint job is of little consequence and is purely cosmetic. You don't have to spend a mint restoring your gel coat, you can repaint your boat on the cheap:
http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...lly-started-w-pics-384982-10.html#post3302799

The things that need your urgent attention are the stringers, bulkheads, foam, and transom. They need to be completely removed and put back new, they're old and wet/damp and aren't going to get any better. Once you get these thing removed and built back you'll be over the hump and it'll be all downhill from there.

Take a look around at some of the other f'glass resto threads threads here... there are people restoring old rotten trihulls that are a dime a dozen! Trihulls are ok if that's what you want, but I think a CC is much more worthy of a resto than a trihull.

Re: Center console deck repair

I have all the rigging electronics wiring is all there and in good working order. I removed it all to start this restore. Originally my plan was to just cut back the deck and repair. What I would prefer to do is separate the top from the bottom is this possible on this boat?
This way I can fix everything including transom

Re: Center console deck repair

Take the rubber out of your rub rail and see if there are rivets behind it, if so just drill them out and you'll be able to work the cap off.

Start reading other f'glass restoration threads for general "how to" knowledge and tips and tricks... you'll probably also see a couple of things not to do like cutting through the hull when removing stringers and transom and cutting your hands and feet with the grinder... stuff like that.

Removed all the rivets and screws in the process of separating I am assuming the foam is making this a bit difficult

Yeah, that's why I said work the cap off. Foam is probably holding it some and there may be sealants and/or adhesives holding it as well... most just don't pop right off. You'll have to work, struggle, cuss, and fuss that thing off... you might try crying a little too, but only as a last resort.;)

The good thing is it will be lighter with the section of decking cut out of it, which reminds me... make sure that little bit of decking left doesn't have any fasteners holding it to the stringers.

Re: Center console deck repair

Sorry to inform you but...I don't think your boat has a "CAP". I believe it is a "Liner" construction type. That means it was built like this...

images

Replacing stringers and transom in a boat like this is NOT like on boats that do not have a liner. The foam is prolly adhered to the entire side walls etc. Good news is they are prolly dry and no need to replace. Some people with this type of boat have replaced the transom by cutting the outer skin to replace it. It will be more challenging than the other type boat but it can be done.
