I think the biggest rub in GA was they were warned well in advance and no one was proactive......... AKA keep the kids at home since the area was under a warning at 3am that day......

Exactly! They should have been out salting and sanding that morning too

There are a lot of Northern transplants and northern jack knifing truck drivers out on Atlanta roads too.
I am trying to find a record of the Snow fall that led to an all day and half the night traffic tie up back in 1993 or 94 or 95. between I-40 and Missouri. Been so long, hard to find anything now

I just watched the GA Governor's news conference. The only thing I learned is they need a bigger bus cuz it's getting crowded under there!:lol: Al Roker nailed it!

I am a bit confused, I just watched a news report on this incident and people are saying the National Guard should have been called out sooner? I have lived all over the world and never seen it necessary to call the military out for a snow storm?

The Guard can be called during a state of emergency by the Governor, their boss. The Gov waited until the entire metro area was tied in knots to declare. The NG was performing Good Samaritan acts, food and water to stranded motorists, getting the kids stuck at school. No different than driving a Hummer into flood waters or evacuating hurricane victims - They were protecting the welfare of the state residents.

In the midst of it all this morning, I heard a cool report on CBS radio: the biggest story out of the SE Snowstorm was Southern Hospitality. It was a short story on folks coming out to stranded motorists with blankets, coffee, offers of shelter, etc.

We don't much know what to do with snow y'all, but we're right neighborly while it's snowin'. ;)

I particularly liked the story about the Atlanta braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was stuck in traffic and called former Braves great Chipper Jones and told him what was going on and Chipper came and picked him up on his 4 wheeler and then took him back to his house with him.

Oh, ok,

So the people were saying that they needed someone to take care of them because they were not responsible for themselves, now I understand..

Thanks GA

The Guard is paid for by citizens taxes. They are always going out and doing weekend maneuvers so they can stay sharp. I am sure the guard appreciates the opportunity to practice their craft in real life situations.

Likely made little difference. There's a good chance the roads were brined, but the South isn't equipped to respond to snow and ice quickly. Rarely do we need to do it, and even our road systems aren't conducive. Atlanta isn't quite as bad as Nashville, but with the hills we have sometimes the rigs can't move on the ice they're trying to clear. I think TN only has about 200 total plow rigs in the state … some of y'all have that in your city. Even knowing it was coming, we're just not experienced enough to know what to do with it.

I've lived in my house for 15 years and this winter has finally gotten cold enough to show me that I have a few insulating issues I didn't really know about.

One out of Alabama this morning that a fast food restaurant owner cooked a couple hunr'd sammiches and took 'em out to folks stuck in traffic. I'm gonna' have to ease up on my poking fun at the Tide fans. ;)

Yah MT it happens ever where. In the Cleveland Ohio area in 1978 "More than 5,000 members of the Ohio National Guard were called in to make numerous rescues." Additionally during that time Police asked citizens who had four-wheel-drive vehicles or snowmobiles to take doctors to hospitals.

No - The Guard doesn't just help the irresponsible. They are equal opportunity helpers, even those that get caught up in the situation through no fault of their own.

Re: Boo hoo - We had a little snow and ice...

I got 26" of snow the other day and my whole area was blanketed with dozens of inches of snow, nobody called the National Guard, I spent 26 years in the Army as an officer, not once were any of my units ever called out for a snow storm. I understand that officials in GA made some mistakes, but so did the residents in that area, I live in Montana and even I knew that there was snow and ice predicted for Atlanta many hours before it happened, told my wife, watch, things are going to be a mess back east and it was.

People need to accept part of the responsibility for their actions is all I am saying. To add to that, I lived in Portland, OR for a while and the same thing happens there when it snows.

GA, I fully understand what you are saying and I am not trying to be a jerk, but I am not a real forgiving individual when it comes to personal responsibility, ask any of the the people that served in my command when I was in the Army. I am glad to see things starting to get back to normal back there.

Well it's a done deal, the governor was at fault. (Are you kidding me?)

idk, I heard him apologize for not doing something sooner. I would have to agree.......
