Spoken like a true northerner.:facepalm: Having lived in the Cleveland Ohio area and now in SC I can tell you, unless you live here you can not understand the effects snow and ICE have on the region.

I too live in upstate SC and out department of transportation is not equipped to control snow and ice on the roads and many people don't experience this often and don't know what to do

I kinda disagree with the "don't have the equipemnt xxxxx" I live in NW MS and if we have a hint of something may happen they got the trucks out dumping clay and salt the day before. But it's just a mess all the way around in ATL regardless of mother nature, mayors, or untrained drivers, etc.

? long about August, the visiting Northerners here in the South will make up for our whining during the winter.

How? They most likely will be back north. They know when to leave the bugs

I don't know about that It depends i think where he lives. I was stationed there in the 60's and to me then it was cold and damp from the rain. Not anywhere near as cold here but it would be for them.He might be this year. It's hot and dry (no rain) this year.

I got caught in that mess yesterday. I had an 11 mile commute, and it took me 5 hours. There were several problems yesterday; 1. the temperatures never got above freezing, so what was falling was freezing to the ground causing a lot of black ice. 2. There was a lot more snow than originally anticipated, so folks all bailed out of their workplaces at roughly the same time, and 3. people are not used to driving on ice and in snowy conditions, so they were going way too slow and impeding traffic. With no tires breaking up the ice and keeping it warm enough to melt, and no real equipment for handling icy roads, the roads were skating rinks. With all the hills here, it made the roads impassable.

That having been said, I did not see any crashes in my 11 mile commute, and only 2 cars in ditches. I kept my truck in 4WD and only slipped a little once.

I do love that the Atlanta mayor is blaming businesses for letting their employees out at the same time. Putz!

You forgot one of the biggest problems, the big trucks jacked knifed across 3 & 4 lanes blocking the roads. All lined up every where. People running out of gas after being stranded for hours trying to get home from work, some after 24hrs still are. vehicles abandoned. Over 690 accidents reported. It took me 9 1/2 hrs to drive 13 miles.
Total mess. Worst ever.

Hmmmm, and you've lived in GA how long?

I think you should have known better, and did the "shelter in place" routine.
Better to sleep on the floor at work, than to put up with clogged up roads. I hate traffic !!!

Today, everyone seemed to be complaining about their property tax bills.

I simply told them to go home, turn on the news, and look at the mess you guys were dealing with.
Then ask yourself if you would rather have low taxes and low service, or high taxes and clear roads.

It seem like every year, one of the new Packer recruits comments on how we can get 10" of snow, and get out and drive anywhere you want, in an hour or two.

Hell,

I got 26 inches today, who do I get to blame!!!

Up early, so I can get a start plowing the road, so my neighbors who still have to work can get there on time, the next time this happens, someone else gets the job, we just trade off around here, drink coffee with a tinge of whiskey in and laugh at the news reports of those in the south!

This was an unusual snow fall. Tiny flakes of ice crystals mixed with something that looked like real snow flakes. You didn't think it was going to amount to much and it didn't. 2" of snow usually isn't that big of a deal. The road will stay wet or slushy. This was something that quickly formed sheets of ice that you could ice skate on. I didn't see any sleet type participation where ice pellets were bouncing off things. We didn't get as much as Atlanta and still our roads got treacherous. Temps below freezing and dropping. Very low Humidity
I think the one big Mistake Atlanta schools made was not cancelling schools the night before when they got a winter storm warning from the NWS. Atlanta Metro area make up around 5 million people. 1000s of workers commute. Atlanta is a traffic nightmare without snow and ice added to it. So the the government let the workers and school kids out at the same time into a skating rink, an idiot could see a disaster in the making. Plow and salters could not get through the traffic jam
I brushed the snow off my windshield and there was a thick coating of ice under that

In the midst of it all this morning, I heard a cool report on CBS radio: the biggest story out of the SE Snowstorm was Southern Hospitality. It was a short story on folks coming out to stranded motorists with blankets, coffee, offers of shelter, etc.

We don't much know what to do with snow y'all, but we're right neighborly while it's snowin'. ;)

Just watching the morning weather and you guys are definitely on the wrong side of the arctic low, mindya we are catching the tail end of that system and the arctic line is dropping over us in the next few days.
Last time I skied whitefish we stayed in Kalispel, from the night we arrived till the next morning it snowed about three feet plus the drifting, great for sking but pita to drive through.
Nothing like pushing snow with your radiator.

Yup, a real driver's ed. class does prepare a person better. :D :D :D

I just happen to remember the great traffic snow highway jam in Missouri back in the 90s. I am sure you remember that one :D
