Won't stay running...

Okay...so...I have a 15 foot Whaler with a 70 horse Evinrude on it. The boat and motor are in extremely good shape for how old they are. I just got the boat and the previous owner had let it sit for quite some time (a couple years at least).

Anyway, it won't start unless I put fuel directly into the carbs. Once it starts it just burns what fuel I put in there and then dies. I've emptied the fuel tank and replaced the fuel with new gasoline and I'v removed the nasty old fuel from the lines and filter. However, it still won't start under it's own power. I've noticed that around the fuel filter and where the fuel line connects to the engine that it leaks a little bit of fuel.

Can anybody help me with this. I really want to get it on the water this summer without having to pay too much to get it going. I'm happy to do the work myself, but I just don't know enough about outboards.

Thanks a million!

What year is the motor. You can tell the year by the model #. i.e.; E70PLSSM

E = Evinrude
70 = Hp
PL = power tilt / long shaft
SS = 00
M = model run (not real important in most cases)

use this to determine model year:

I - 1
N - 2
T - 3
R - 4
O - 5
D - 6
U - 7
C - 8
E - 9
S - 0

Next question: Can you get it to run if you push the key in and crank the engine? (i.e. choking/priming it)

E70ELCDC is the model number...I'm not sure exactly what that says about the year. I tried to use your key, but I must not be understanding it properly. Is it a 1986?

Wow, thanks for the advice. I pushed the key in while cranking it and it fired right up, but didn't stay running. there is a lever on the top of the throttle housing...what does it do?

So...now it wants to start and it wants to stay running, but it just won't. It's running for different amounts of time each time I try it. Also, I'm getting a lot of white smoke and I don't seem to get water coming out of anywhere even though I have the hose hooked to the engine. Forgive me...I'm new to the outboard scene and I got this boat for free, but I don't want to hurt this engine.

Yup! it's an 86! if it's not running for long you probably won't see water for 30 sec to a min. Keep the key pushed in and keep it running that way for a while until it starts to choke out, let go, then push back in if it starts to die. I call it "Riding the choke" if it hasn't run in a while. the lever is a fast idle lever. Lift it up and start it the same way...just be ready to lower it a little if the engine races too much. if after 30 sec or so, you still don't see water coming out anywhere, you may need a new water pump.

Hope that helps!

I would say you definetely have a fuel problem, your lever on top is for your idle. Everybody probably agrees your carbs are probly gummed up from sitting for that long with stale fuel. the kits are cheap and the carbs are easy to clean and build. start with the obvious and work back.

P.S.

Those motors are notoriously cold blooded. Especially after a long period of setting. try riding the choke for a while before diving into the carbs. Oh, and by the way, make sure the "overboard indicator" isn't plugged up with dirt or anything that would stop the water from coming out.

Re: Won't stay running...

So...it still won't stay running. I see how the fast idle lever works and pushing the key in seems to help a little bit, but when I try to keep it running (either by pushing the key in or lifting the fast idle lever) the engine just dies. It still runs for different lengths of time. I can sometimes keep it going for a few moments longer by giving it some throttle, but it just doesn't want to stay running. I'll keep trying! :)

Any more tips are much appreciated!

Re: Won't stay running...

I really appreciate all of the advice! Seriously, it's helped me out a lot.

So...I replaced the fuel, cleaned the lines, added some fuel treatment, used a ton of carb cleaner and after a long day of trying it finally starts up and runs...smoothly I might ad. It fires and idles nicely on the first turn.

Here's where I stand:

I'm wondering if there is a way to make sure that fuel AND OIL is getting to the proper places...? The motor is running smoothly, but you're right...I do not want to blow the thing up and if I have to spend some time cleaning some carbs, which I am confident I have the mechanical ability to do, then I will. However, if I there is a way to be sure that the motor is getting oil then I'll take that route first. If cleaning the carbs is an easy task then I will certainly just do it...

Right now the exhaust is greyish in color. I seem to remember two stroke engines putting off more of a bluish color. Any thought?

Again, thank you all for your input. I'm truly excited about this boat! It's running, it's free, it's cleaned up and I believe it's almost ready for the water.

You are asking the right question and I will tell you what I know BUT I am not an expert! Just an old guy who has been fooling with boats and motors for 50+ years. Your motor should have been equipped from the factory with a remote oil tank connected to a VRO pump under the hood. I believe VRO (Variable Ratio Oiling) was first delivered on 1985 OMC models and lots of them have been de-activated or removed, not to mention possible malfunctions after 24 years. Check to see if your motor still has the VRO pump and tank installed with a hose connecting them. If not, then pre-mix your gas with TC-W3 oil at 50:1 ratio. If the VRO assembly is still installed, then you need to test it for proper operation to help insure the motor is receiving the the required lubrication without having to pre-mix. I do not have an OMC service manual for your model to help you with the testing procedures. The only online resource I can find is at the link below. It is a non-factory manual and may provide what you need.
