Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks for the well wishes guys...I'll be fine...could be worse...cut off a finger or slice into a major artery working on a tinny :)

Got the grandson off his backside and taught him all I know about sanding...so he can assist me...he didn't do too bad...

He also helped me clean the shed out..was looking bad....still need to clean my cart/table off...maybe tomorrow morning...

Put some of my metal tape on the shoe of the airfile...wanted to see if the paper would stick to it....worked great! I used the airfile for half hour or so on the high point of the keel...exposed some cracked glass... was not what I wanted to see here...dang wish I knew this was here before I put the deck down! oh well, work with what I have...it will work out...I need a bigger compressor too!

JB...you really get me ;) I was trying to talk the Mrs into helping too...she has sanded quite a few tractor hoods...auto bumpers...pillar covers in her day...just haven't found what it will take to talk her into it...

Better you found it now when you can do something about it.
Can you put up a pic of the airfile with the metal tape on it. Would like to see if I can use it on mine. Anything that helps with the sanding is worth it.

Have a great weekend.

^^^ Well you might start by promising her that you will leave all her cooking utensils in the kitchen where they belong like blenders and square spoons and such .. Then move on to just help me get this one side done then we,ll git cleaned up and go out to eat kinda bribe ...
Thats all I got . Don,t think my wife would go for it ether ..

I wouldn't suggest offering a new set of cookware as a bribe either.....

When the swelling and ringing in my ears stops, the Admiral has graciously offered to review a list of appropriate bribes for assistance and making boat time & funding available.

I look forward to it... I think, it's hard to be sure with all the ringing...

Have a great & productive weekend Trooper et al.... :)

Decker..this file has the clamp system to hold the paper...should have a rubber 'sole' this one is used and the rubber was missing. I had some carpet on it and the paper I got at HF attached very well. The problem is I sent the Mrs and did not realize they sold her the stickon paper....it is about 3/4 - 1" shorter in length so will not wrap up under the clamps. I clamp on one end and tried putting the paper on the bare metal of the shoe but it is rough and water got under it and would not hold. I cleaned it and snaded it as smooth as I could then put a layer of the metal tape on it. The metal tape is just there to give the sand paper something to stick to. It worked great...the paper she got me seems to be cutting ok too...using soapy water....I'll get you a pic tomorrow...You have a great weekend too!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

got up before daytlight today...ready to go...and the a thunderstorm passed through...small one..by 9:30 I could go out and get started...

Started sanding on the keel between transom and the fuel tank area...saw some scratches so cleaned it up to see if there was any damage underneath...and yes there is...those whites lines and spots....injured glass...the scratches didn't look that bad to me from the outside..glad I uncovered them....
DSCF0041.jpg

just the first shot so you see what I started with...there was alot of that blueish soft bondo carp on here...covering all these white spot.....
DSCF0042.jpg

I decided to take a different approach to leaning these out...instead of just grinding everything away...I dished it...imagine a ball being sunk into the area in question...that is what I am trying to make...sperical dish...working pretty good...but slow...
DSCF0043.jpg

Here is a big one...small spot on surface...but the way the glass was pushed in it spread out just like rings in a pool of water getting hit with a stone....
DSCF0044.jpg

have to make my 'ball' roll in this area...but same concept....
DSCF0045.jpg

This spot still doesn't look clean...but it feels strong to me just hitting it....the glass looks loose but it isn't...what say ye...keep going?

Looks like a perfect plan to me...you could probably work some resin underneath any suspicious areas first with a brush, then do the normal fill and fair with some PB and maybe a little circle or two of CSM...definitely don't look like they would be too much of a structural worry...more cosmetic in nature...

If you have handy a Dremel or a drill motor, with a round ball shaped carbide cutting bit, makes quick work of these small areas...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I was ready for a change in scenery...so moved up closer to the bow and started grinding...

Went through and could see foam...
DSCF0051.jpg

Been feeling like rain so I did an emergency patch...2 CSM/1 1708/1CSM/1 1708...came out just about right...while trying to line the right side up with my previous glassing..came up witht he idea to leave one side staggared....will help with the next section and will help taper it up on the bow area....

Cooling down here finally..went a little heavy on the mekp...curing fine...

On your, "Golf Ball" areas I'd recommend feathering them open a bit more to allow more surface area for the glass the adhere to.;)

Troop man! one thing after the other witht the hull it seems. It sure looks like you come up with a good plan for addressing each issue (nic work). Hell i feel like sh-t for chipping the gel coat on my Ray this afternoon with a 2x12 and it hasn't even been outside all year.

Yes I keep finding more surprises for sure!

Bet you hated to chip the gelcoat, but I'm sure you can fix it in a few minutes..and thanks for the complement :)

I know that there's no chance to know that hulls history, but I think the factory tried to save a badly molded hull.
