Nice cool 80 something degrees today..didn't feel like grinding...so....started cutting CSM circles...little ones..big ones...in between ones...some oblong...some hourglass shaped ones too.....laid a piece of blue tape over them...so they wouldn't blow away...washed the spots where they were going with acetone...mixed a little resin and went to town..

Here they are stuck to the hull...just used a chip brush cut down to tap the bubbles out...had some scissors and CSM handy if needed...for the most part i had them about right..flush or just a little higher...

This pic didn't come out as good as I had hoped...but you get the idea...
DSCF0057.jpg

I may be totally wrong but here is my thinking...resin/CSM is much stronger than bondo...the bad glass was taken out..these layers of CSM/Resin will make a good bond and be strong...I will sand them down flush...smear some fairing compound down...do a final sand..and should be good for paint/gelcoat.....and no I still haven't made my choice on whether to paint or gel...

We are on the downhill side of the last day of the weekend..hope everyone has a productive day!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

cooler...but still HOT...too hot on the surface of the hull to be doing anymore glassin....sooooo...let's sand....

Took my home made long board...put some metal tape on it...stuck a new sanding pad on it and started strokin' the front bow glass I did yesterday....

This is why my hands were so full of glass earlier...shees that stuff piles up...this was all dry sanding...hardly any buildup on the paper...but I grew tired quickly....so pulled out the aircompressor and used the airfile..and then manual...then air...then manual...then air....then manual...

Not looking too bad...

Question: when fairing these patches...I assume I rough it down close....then put on my fairing compound and sand to get the final slope? The angle will change a little bit I also assume...no way this is going back to what it was is it? I mean if I do most of the glass I put down will be gone..and I'd think I want it to stay in a single sheet more or less for strength?

Nice progress, Troop...

To answer your Q? If you have enough cloth/mat layers built up for the required strength/thickness, then, Yes, you can get it close enough then finish it with fairing material...

It does seem to be a never ending process, getting the hull ready for finishing, but you know that the prep is where the real shine comes from and the devil is in the details...

Whether we want to admit it or not, we tend to be extremely anal about the look of the bottom of the boat...sure the fish are the only ones who are going to see it, and yeah it is gonna get usage rash, scraped, banged up, etc... but we just can't sleep at night until we know we have done the best possible job...

Keep your chin up, you are closer than you think and it is definitely gonna be better than it ever was...;)

BTW, I know it's not even Monday yet, but Hurry up FRIDAY!

you gpt that right GT!

More sanding...it is actually starting to look pretty good...got the very front part smoothed out pretty close...did this by hand with 80 grit on a sanding block...I'm not sure what hurts worse...my arms from all the sanding...my back from all the bending...or my feet from all the crouching standing on that ledge the water is balanced on....

And yes...come on Friday!

That kind of screws with your mind a little. The houses are upside down in the back ground and the mind is like," what the h377 just happened?"

It makes it easier for me to ignore the houses, fence & etc.... Viewing it as the hull 'should' be when upright. And to concentrate on looking at the hull lines, strakes & etc..;)

Answer: None of the above.

The correct answer is...Your head from all the thinking...

Now go get yourself a well deserved couple of cold ones, some pain killers, shower, and nice dinner...not necessarily in that order...:D

If, after sanding the spots that got the resin and CSM you find it to be smooth and free of pinholes etc, then no fairing is required. On the BF I had multiple spots that sanded out great and required no fairing. Pinholes will not be an issue if gelcoating and really not so much if you use a high build primer either. your first coat of primer, If you decide to paint, will show you where you need to do any touch ups. I had a lot of those!!!!:D Now that she's splashed, I realize I spent WAY to much time making her PERFECT. It did NOT matter.

Yep, pretty is important. Structurally sound is THE key and you are doing that. I KNOW we all want it to be FACTORY but...what I have found now that I'm pretty much done is...I should have spent less time on making her perfect and more time on "getting her done" Especially on the bottom "unseen" portions of the hull" that I know are already scuffed up after only two outings. You WON"T be able to stop yourself, cuz I was told the same thing and couldn't do it either. Just had to pass it forward!!!! We boat restore'rs are all poured from the same mold.:D You're doing a Great Job...As Always!!!

One thing sums it all up and that is WORK ETHIC! Something that is inherited into your DNA either you have it or don't it forces you to do the best you can at whatever you do that is why I follow this thread daily Troop stays at it and the proof is in the puddin! thumbs up Troop.
